Most marks are lost here, before a word is written. Highlight the instruction verb in your question - "evaluate" and "critically discuss" demand judgement and counter-argument, while "describe" and "outline" do not, and answering the wrong verb caps your grade no matter how well you write. Then put the marking scheme/rubric beside the brief and note what each criterion is worth. If 30% of the marks sit under "critical analysis" and 10% under "structure", your effort should be allocated the same way. Finally, list the constraints: word count and tolerance, referencing style, number and type of sources, whether first person is permitted, and the submission format.
Never start writing without a numbered outline. Assign a word budget to every section first, then write to it - it prevents the classic failure of a 700-word introduction and a rushed, two-line conclusion. For a typical 2,000-word assignment:
| Section | Share | Words | Job it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Introduction | 10% | ~200 | Context, the problem, your line of argument, and how the assignment will proceed |
| Main body - 4 or 5 themed sections | 80% | ~1,600 | One idea per section: claim, evidence, analysis, link to the next |
| Conclusion | 10% | ~200 | Answers the question directly. No new material, no new citations |
| Reference list | - | Excluded | Usually outside the word count - check your handbook |
Organise the body by theme or argument, never by source. "Author A said… Author B said…" is the surest sign of a descriptive, low-2:2 assignment.
Start with your reading list and module materials, because tutors mark against the literature they taught. Extend outward through your library databases using Boolean strings, and follow citation trails backwards from a recent review article. Keep to peer-reviewed journals, scholarly books, official statistics and regulatory or professional sources; avoid encyclopaedias and content-farm websites entirely. Record every source in your reference manager as you read it, along with the page number and one sentence on how you intend to use it. Be sceptical of AI tools at this stage - they routinely invent plausible-looking references, and a fabricated citation is an academic integrity issue.
Write the middle before the introduction: you can only introduce an argument you've already made. A reliable paragraph pattern is claim → evidence → analysis → link. Open with a topic sentence stating the point, cite the evidence, then spend at least as many words explaining what that evidence means for the question as you spent presenting it - that explanatory move is what mark schemes/rubrics call critical analysis. Close by linking forward. Where the literature disagrees, say so and take a position; acknowledging a counter-argument and answering it demonstrates exactly the judgement first-class marks reward.
Cite in the body the moment you use a source, and match your in-text citations to your reference list before you do anything else. Paraphrase in your own sentence structure rather than swapping synonyms into someone else's, and quote sparingly - a few lines at most, always with a page number and always analysed afterwards. Check the exact style your department requires and use a generator to speed up the mechanics, then verify each entry by hand: Harvard, APA 7, Vancouver, OSCOLA and MLA guides are all free on this site.
Leave the draft for a day if you can, then edit in three separate passes rather than one. First structural: does each section earn its place and answer the question? Second line-level: cut hedging and filler, split sentences over roughly 25 words, and check every paragraph opens with its point. Third proofreading: read it aloud or use text-to-speech, which catches errors your eye skips. Then verify the word count, the formatting rules and the reference list, and run a similarity check so you can fix any unintentional overlap before your tutor sees it. If you'd like a second opinion, our editing service and marking service return mark-scheme/rubric-mapped feedback on work you've written yourself.
Want to see all six stages done properly on your own brief? A model answer to your exact assignment from a qualified academic shows you exactly how it's handled in your subject.
