They may bat in the same style or they will wear their idol’s jerseys, with the name on the back. But kids love to stay involved in sports.         Everyday ESPN updates their website with the latest scores, and stats. Sports like baseball, football, basketball, soccer, and hockey play a role on a national level. These games are nationally televised and people throw parties just to watch them. Take the Super Bowl; people throw parties just to watch the game. This becomes the most important thing in a viewer’s life that Sunday. People even call work to call in sick just to recover from the Super Bowl. Its games like these where cheering for your becomes a great form of bonding with your family. Yelling, cheering, screaming, swearing and complaining is all part of the bonding. Hearing each other’s opinions changes your own opinion in ways. If you hear your dad screaming that it was a bad call, then wanting to be like him or to gain his attention, you agree and say that it must’ve been a bad call. But also attending sports is an even better way of bonding with your family. Driving to the stadium, even tailgating with them (in my opinion the best way of bonding), and then later on cheering with thousands of other fans wanting to see their team win and be the best that they can be. Then there are the Olympics. Seriously, what is better than cheering on your nation?

Another way is by participating in the sports. Waking up at 7 on a Saturday morning and heading out to the cold soccer field is also a way of bonding. Playing knowing that you are being watched, trying your hardest and winning is all part of the bonding. You play trying to impress the people on the sidelines and if you try hard enough than you may make it far enough to play in high school. Players in high school seem to become great friends with their teammates. If you see one of your teammates walking in the hall, you may go over and do a little handshake or a little bump. But the players are able to develop their skills together as well as their social skills. They gain the opportunity to go to tournaments together across the country. I would say that most of this bonding would happen on these cross country trips. The players are stuck together almost forcing the players to bond and like each other. Stuck together on a plane, in the hotel, on the bus, on the field, then back on the bus, back to the hotel, back on the plane, and finally back at school. The players overcome their differences and learn to play like a family.

Lastly sports teach children about respect, attitude, self esteem, perseverance, and teach ability. Children learn respect by learning to control their feelings for other players and gain confidence for themselves. Attitude is gained through skill and experiencing wins and losses, and learning to cope with being sidelined. Self esteem is grown through family. When family cheers on their kids, or brothers/sisters, self esteem is boosted, and can only be brought down if the family puts him or her down. Through practicing and participating in sports kids learn perseverance, and kids need to learn from failure in a positive way. Finally sports teaches kids the ability to be taught. Going to practice every day or every other day gets families into a schedule and a rhythm about sports. They look forward to the days they have practice and have fun doing the sport.

Sports are used to keep in touch with friends that live far away. Maybe it’s an old college roommate that lives across the country, or a family member that has moved away from home. A simple text message or a call to discuss your team’s latest transaction is a good way to communicate with someone you don’t see that often. Athletic competition provides opportunities for young people to learn and grow. If your children are involved in sports, make the most of the opportunity to teach them about these six important character qualities:
