In Saudi Arabia, it is learnt that such types of advertisements are not yet popular and they are largely non-existent because people are simply unaware of the benefits that can be enjoyed through the use of such advertising modes. It is appreciated here that elevator advertisements are not costly and in reality, it is very cost effective. What can be theorized here is that if properly used, it would revolutionize the marketing and commercials world. Elevator advertisement is a powerful tool for attracting the desired customers and it is essentially a forcible method of advertising due to the fact that they don’t have any alternatives except to look at the advertisements. Hence, there is non escaping and elevator and escalator users would be forced to view the advertisements and then get an idea of the advertising motive.

  • 106 in the Eastern Region (Dammam, Dhahran, Al-Khobar and Al-Ahsa)
  • 86 in the Northern Region (Hail, Tabouk and Al-Jouf)
  • 59 in the Southern Region (Jizan, Najran and Abha)

       The unit of analysis will be the people who are using the elevators and escalators regularly such as the people who are working in the shopping malls, airports, offices buildings and hotels. The locations will be in the high traffic and the most crowded and busiest places.

Research findings

The research findings will be discussed comprehensively below.

Respondents Awareness of Advertisements on Elevators and Escalators

       The respondents were asked about whether they were aware of the notices and advertisements that were placed in elevators and escalators and to this question, 68% of the respondents stated here that the first thing that they looked at was any notice or print advertisements in the elevators or on the escalators. Hence, it is apparent here that the respondent’s eyes are always focused on objects posted on the elevators and escalators when they are waiting for the ride to end and hence it is apparent that this powerful and aggressive tool for marketing can be used to market the products or services. It is a very important and effective strategy to modern marketing.

Respondents Alertness in Reading Advertisement Content on Elevators and Escalators

       Many respondents stated here that the tended to read whatever they could when being transferred on the elevator or escalator and this accounted for about 89% of the respondents. Hence, this would be an excellent opportunity to provide these persons with interesting like a media advertisements that would enhance the appearance of the elevator. Such can be accomplished by placing brochures of the company products on the elevator. The fact that the majority of the respondent’s attention is caught by the advertisements; this would be an excellent way of promoting a product of service.

Respondents Perception towards Escalator and Elevator Advertisements

       The respondents were asked whether escalator and elevator advertisements would be annoying for them or pleasant and to this question the majority of the respondents stated that this form of advertising is not annoying at all in comparison to radio or television advertising. This accounted for 95% of the respondents. The other respondents said that it was quite annoying for them as they did not like any form of advertisements.

Types of Media that Captivates Respondents Attention

       The respondents were also asked what kind of media would catch their attention the most in elevators and the majority of them (78%) said that a small monitor that played advertisements in real time would be the most appropriate form of advertising that is most likely to catch the attention of the users. The other 22% said that brochures and print media as sufficient to catch their attention.

Effectiveness of the Escalator and Elevator Advertising from the Perspective of

Respondents

       The respondents had been asked whether they found escalator and elevator advertising to be very effective in catching their attention and assisting them in making their mind up whether to buy the product that is being advertised. It was found here that the majority of the respondents (83%) stated that escalator and elevator advertising did enhance their perception of the product or service being advertised and that the use of this mode of advertising was more appealing to them due to its innovativeness and convenience in getting the message across.

Respondents Preference for Advertising Modes

       The respondents had been asked about what kind of advertising mode that they would prefer and were given a number of selections and of all these selections, the users selected television advertising as the mode of preference. This has accounted for 74% of the respondents. The other respondents (19%) selected radio advertising and only a small minority (7%) selected elevator and escalator advertising. The reason for this is due to the fact that elevator and escalator advertising is virtually unheard of in Saudi Arabia and hence many of the respondents have no idea that such a mode of advertising does exist.

       Respondents were asked whether they have used escalator and elevator advertising in the past and 100% of the respondents had said that they have not used such kind of advertising in the past. They said that they did have some idea that this mode of advertising did exist but they have never used it before. This reveals to us that such a mode of advertising is practically non-existent in Saudi Arabia.

Respondents Willingness to Try Out Escalator and Elevator Advertising as an

Advertising Tool

       Respondents from various organisations in Saudi Arabia that were the subject of the research were asked whether this would be a form of advertising that will be willing to try out in the future. A large majority of the respondents had stated that they would be willing to use such a mode of advertising in the future to promote their goods and services. This accounted for about 98% of the respondents. The other 2% said that they would not be willing to try out this new form of advertising.

Respondents Opinion on Whether the Use of Escalator and Elevator

Advertising would be Beneficial

       The respondents had been asked whether the use of elevator and escalator advertising would be beneficial to their operations and it was found that a large majority of the respondents stated that the use of this method of advertising would be very beneficial to their marketing activities. This had accounted for 86% of the respondents. The other respondents stated that the use of this method of advertising would to be very beneficial to them and those other forms of advertising like TV or newspaper advertising was more effective. From this it can be discerned that most of the respondents are aware of the benefits of escalator and elevator advertising and hence it is very apparent that these Saudi Arabian companies would embrace the use of this form of advertising quite well.

Respondents Opinion on Whether the Use of Escalator and Elevator

Advertising would be Beneficial to their Premises

       The respondents were asked whether the use of elevator and escalator advertising would be beneficial to their premises. It was found here that the majority of the respondents (79%) have chosen the opinion that such advertising would be very beneficial to their premises. They said that such advertisements would enhance their premises by making its more eyes catching and using up spaces that were boring before.

Limitations

       For this research, some limitations were encountered. One of the was the lack of information on this topic and this was largely due to the fact that this form of advertising is often overlooked and this is due to the fact that not much research was conducted on elevator and escalator advertising. Due to this, secondary research sources did not produce very precise information on this topic and hence primary data methodologies like questionnaires and interviews had to be used in order to acquire the desired information for the purposes of satisfying the research objectives.

Discussions and & Recommendations

       This discussion has revealed some very important aspects of elevator and escalator advertising and has demonstrated that this kind of advertising is very effective due to its nature. This kind of advertising is theorized to be very creative and it takes advantage of empty spaces that were previously understood to be irrelevant. Little to promoters realize that these empty spaces on elevators and escalators are capable of being used to advertise goods and services. The nature of the escalator and elevator is such that any kind of advertising that is placed on these would capture the attention of its users, which will then get an idea of what it being advertised. It is learnt that the elevator and escalator advertising technique leaves no choice to the user but to pay attention to the advertisements on display. This contrasts from radio or television advertising where the viewer or listener might simply ignore advertisements without even giving attention to its content.

       The main recommendation that can be made here in relation to the use of escalator and elevator advertising is that companies in Saudi Arabia should adopt the use of escalator and elevator advertising more extensively in order to achieve a high level of reach and penetration.
