This report is part of our Business Communications Class at College of the Sequoias; our topic (Target Corporation) was first chosen with others by our professor Lucy DeCaro then chosen again by Susan McCormick. All of us on Team 1 voted unanimously to claim Target as our company to research. We wanted to see if Target held up to our impressions we had prior to researching this company.

If you have never shopped at a Target store, this might give you a reason to do so. Target is in almost every city in United States and is gaining a foothold in the global market place. Their logos are a household name with good feeling attached to it. Targets' integrity is unmatched in the discount franchise market place.

Our goal is to show the direct and indirect benefits that Target has to offer. We intend to prove that this store lives up to the advertizing and slogans we have heard and seen for years. Target History in Brief

In 1902 Dayton Dry Goods was formed in Minneapolis, Minnesota by George D. Dayton. In 1901 George was a banker / real estate investor who became a partner in Good Fellow's Dry Goods Company. Within one year, he took over and became the owner / president and renamed Good Fellow's Dry Goods. It was then called Dayton Dry Goods for ten years. In 1912 it is renamed The Dayton Company and is more widely known as Dayton Department Stores. In 1916, The Dayton Company starts Retail Research Association (A co-op of retailers) after two years becomes Associated Merchandising Corporation. 1

Therefore, Dayton's decided to use airplanes to deliver the goods to the stores in Minneapolis. The good were in such high demand because of the strike, that the public escorted the planes though the streets to buy the goods thus started a new era of shipping methods.

1938 George D. Dayton dies and his son George N. Dayton takes over. 1950 George N. dies and Donald C. Dayton takes over as president and gradually all the grandsons take top positions in the company, a truly family owned company.

In 1956, The Dayton Company spearheads the first fully enclosed shopping mall putting the top retailers in one shopping building. This was to address the sprawling suburbs needs and changed forever the way we shop here in America.

1960 Target is born. It was the innovative thinking that changed the Dayton's Department stores into a new discount store chain we now call Target. It was in 1961 that Douglas J. Dayton targets the department stores vast wealth and knowledge to combine fashion, supermarkets, and discount quality into one shopping place.

1962 they debated and came up with Target as the name of the new chain. They also chose the red and white colors and a Bulls Eye as the new logo. “As a marksman's goal is to hit the center bulls-eye, the new store would do much the same in terms of retail goods, services, commitment to the community, price, value and overall experience.”

May 1st 1962 Target's grand opening in Roseville, Minnesota, followed by St Louis Park, Crystal and Duluth, all in Minnesota within the same year. In addition, in 1966 Target starts up outside of Minnesota in Denver, Colorado. Dayton make the transformation complete as it becomes a national retailer and ceases to be the department store chain it once was.

The stock goes public on Sept 6, 1967 with five divisions: Dayton's Department Stores, Target Stores, B. Dalton Bookseller, Dayton Jewelers and Dayton Development Company. The next year the company defines the Target symbol Icon, The single red dot with one circle around it. (Target.com)

Investing in Target Corporation (TGT: NYSE): Is it a good investment today? The stock market is a still quite volatile and with down turn in the economy, or recession, investors should think twice about it. Many of us are still licking our wounds and frustrated with our 401k plans. So, why invest with a company like target?

Ockham's rating (as of 10-14-09) for the past ten years show the cash earnings ratio of price to sales per share highest to lowest are 1.13x to 0.72x. What this means is that the price of the stock must produce a certain cash flow ratio compared to the cost of each share.

Targets cash earnings are one of the most important things to consider when thinking of investing in the company. (Dividends are not the most important thing, although, it is nice to get a check in the mail for owning a piece of the company.) The real deal is that if the price of the stock has the ability to generate cash earnings. (Does it make money?) This is what we call the P/E price to earnings ratio. As of 10-16-09, the price per share of Target stock is $51.35 and each share earns $2.86 per share per year. The price to earnings ratio is a bit on the high side at 18.10, based on historic values, (the lower the number the better) but still holds a rather firm grip with investors. Ockham also considers the recent economy and its historical ratios of 16.00 and to 10.02. Dividends are another factor to consider but not the biggest by any stretch at $.68 per share per year, meaning a yield of about 1.38% currently. You should also factor in the historical highs of 2.72% and a low of 0.50%. Today the median dividend is only off by about 14.29% of its median, which is not that good or bad. 1. New Targets have Environmental Concerns

It starts with their architecture and storefront design. “Target Corp. is breaking out of the big-box mold with unique exterior designs for its new and renovated stores.”They are being required by the cities where Target wants to build new stores that they not only are attractive, but also fit the surrounding community themes.

They are doing just that in many of the hosting cities by working with Eames Gilmore, senior manager of architecture of store designs for Target. In order to stay profitable the store design and cost must reach a balance between Targets profitability and cities demands. 2. Super Targets

The first Super Target opened in Omaha, Nebraska in 1995. 218 Super Target stores have opened in 22 different U.S states. Most of the stores have opened in Texas and Florida. Super Target stores are approximately 175,000 square feet, offering many amenities to its guests, including a bakery, deli, full grocery selection, and fresh produce. Most Super Targets have a Starbucks, and Pizza hut express. Some stores even have a Taco Bell Express, but are currently being phased out. As each employee during their training, usually within the first three months of employment, attend courses teaching them about some of the situations they may be faced with and help them to understand the value of diversity with Target. Some of the classes they attend cover dealing with differences among the employees, effective communication skills, working in a multi cultural workplace, and managing inclusion. 2. Reducing the Carbon Footprint

Carbon Footprint, the new buzzwords in corporate talk these days, many corporations build this into their overall marketing plan. A marketing plan is not just advertising and selling the product, it is the entire goal and plan of the company with an insight of how the company will affect all stakeholders. The stakeholder in this instance is the environment. Target has since 1989 been using an energy management system, that optimizes their use of energy. According to testimony given to Congress, the U.S. Green Building Council states that buildings emit 39% of all U.S. CO2 and use 71% of the nation's electricity.(USGBC) Target's energy management systems, is centrally located and monitored at the corporate headquarters to enable company-wide energy policy and troubleshooting. Along with the close supervision of energy consumption, Target is now looking at the feasibility of retrofitting stores with on-site energy systems, to include renewable energy such as solar cells (see 5) and fuel cell technology, with a goal to reduce Targets overall carbon footprint.

Post Consumer Products has been a great way Target has been generating revenue. Target maintains programs to recycle, corrugated cardboard, electronics, plastics, mixed paper, aluminum and much more. Target also creates policy for internal actions that are much stricter than the local and regional regulations to ensure compliance, with an eye on protecting the natural resources of our planet. Corporate keeps in mind that any company which does not respect the communities that they do business in, and take a proactive environmental stand, will ultimately fail. 4. Offering a Selection of Natural, Organic and Eco-friendly Products

Target Food and Grocery is an organic produce retailer, the USDA certified Target in 2006 and Target now carries more than 700 organic items. Many of the organic items that Target sells, are owned-brand items from Archer Farms© label. They produce milk, cereal, whole-wheat pasta, pizza, applesauce, frozen yogurt, olives, tea, and so many other products. (Target Report 31)

The health and beauty selection at Target also maintains environmentally responsible standards. All of the personal care products have not been developed through animal testing, and are free of synthetic materials such as phthalates, sulfates and parabens. These standards of environmentally conscious and consumer minded ideals have made Target an industry leader and innovator in how to conduct responsible business in our communities and throughout the world. Target also influences vendors, how they use resources, ethical and product safety standards, and the fair treatment of all employees. Target requires that vendors guarantee that all goods are made in compliance with all relevant laws, both U.S. and the laws of the country in which the goods are produced. This includes the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, which governs how employers pay and treat their employees. To be in compliance with this contract term, the vendors must confirm that their business partners are also in compliance with the law. In addition, they establish similar basic minimum requirements in certain countries where labor laws are not yet well developed. Since 1946 Target has given 5% of income through community grants and programs that support education and the arts and social services. Whether it helps kids read, make art supplies available or offering emergency aid in a time of crisis, Target demonstrates its commitment to its communities in many ways. Some of the ways Target supports the community is through giving red card holders the option to choose which school locally they choose to donate 1% of their purchase to. Also Target celebrates Dr. Seuss's birthday yearly with volunteers at each store to read to children. Target also provides seniors with a personal shopper during the holidays and even assists them with free gift wrapping. These are just a few of the great things Target does within their stores.

Target focuses its community giving efforts in four key areas: arts, education, social services, and other vital partnerships.

Arts: Target supports arts experiences that are family-oriented and affordable, including programs such as art exhibits, free days at museums, classes, performances and those that bring the arts to schools or schoolchildren to the arts.

Education: Reading is an essential element of each child's educational process. Target supports programs that promote a love of reading or encourage children to read together with their families. We specifically focus on programs that inspire young readers (birth through 3rd grade). In addition, our Take Charge of Education program is a school fundraising initiative. “Ready. Sit. Read!” is dedicated to fostering a life-long love of reading in children. The program focuses on children from birth to age nine, and was developed in partnership with the United States Department of Education. “Ready. Sit. Read!” includes a partnership with the national non-profit organization Reach Out and Read; sponsorship of the Library of Congress "Letters about Literature" project; monthly children's crossword puzzles; and sponsorship of book festivals throughout the country. Target also supports United Through Reading, a program to help deployed military members and their children stay connected by videotaping the parent reading a book, sending that video to his/her children, and returning a video to the parent that shows the reaction of the child watching the video of the deployed parent reading.

Social Services: Target supports organizations that help build strong communities in which we do business. For example, they support organizations that help prevent family violence such as parenting classes and family counseling. In addition, they also provide assistance for support groups and abuse shelters.

Other Vital Partnerships: Target supports communities through numerous volunteer programs and the United Way. We are a partner with the American Red Cross to support immediate and on-going disaster relief and preparedness. Our partnership with United Way is one of the most successful campaigns in retail. Target supports education with the help of our REDcardsm holders, they have donated more than $260,000,000 to K-12 schools since 1997. Take Charge of Education was launched in 1997 and has contributed to over $260 million to more than 110,000 schools nationwide. Through the Take Charge of Education program, Target donates an amount equal to 1% of REDcardsm (Target Visa and Target Card) purchases made at Target and Target.com and 1/2% of Target Visa purchases made elsewhere, to the eligible K-12 school of the cardholders' choice. Schools have used these unrestricted funds for everything from student recognition programs and new playground equipment to library books and school musical costumes. The Target Corporation will award 5,000 field trip grants of up to $800 each for the coming K-12 school year. Managed by Scholarship America, the Target Field Trip Grants Program is open to education professionals who are at least 18 years old and employed by an accredited K-12 public, private, or charter school in the US with a 501(c)(3) or 509(a)(1) tax-exempt status. Educators, teachers, principals, paraprofessionals, or classified staff of these institutions must be willing to plan and execute a field trip that will provide a demonstrable learning experience for students .Grant funds may be used for visits to art, science, and cultural museums; community service or civics projects; career enrichment opportunities; and other events or activities away from the school facility. Social Services 6 Target is very active in donation to other local charities such as the United Way. Target has actively supported the United Way since 1962. According to Target.com, Target and individual team members donated 13 million dollars in 2008, as well as donating 32,000 volunteer hours as part of the United Way campaign. Target also proudly supports the Salvation Army. In 2008 Target provided 2.42million in direct support of the Salvation Army's mission and programs. Target is also active with the American Red Cross providing relief to flood, fire and tornado victims, Target team members donate time and money on an as needed basis.

Employees seem to have a very positive attitude and outlook. (We also did a controlled survey for eight random employees.) They feel that they get good benefits and have opportunity for advancement. Some employees think that education makes a difference while others, in lower positions, do not. Most feel that the customers are friendly and they do, for the most part, work as a team picking up the slack if some area needs attention. As far as length of employment the average length was about 2 years and they are planning on staying there for about another 7 years on average. 2. Holiday Hiring

According to Amber Miller a reporter for Channel 6 News in Knoxville Tennessee, “Even though the economy is weak, now's a good time to find a job as retail giants are gearing up for the next few months of shopping frenzies. Juliette Egnatz with Human Resources says her store alone has a goal of adding 30 people to the team."We hire people about two weekly," Egnatz says, "but right now our goal is 10people per week." Thursday afternoon, the first group of seasonal employees went through training. Among them, was Safa Noel,a junior at UT, saw the "Now Hiring" signlast week. "I had a full-time job and I quit so I could focus more on college," Noel says. "In the meantime, I needed a part-time job." Target says holiday hiring is a win-win situation and is looking for people who are ready to work. It needs extra hands and future employees get a paycheck plus a 10 percent discount on store merchandise. (Amber Miller)

3. Diversity Among Employees

Target has a diverse group of people working for them. (See table 3) This diversity is at all levels from the most senior board member to the newest employees. The Diverse atmosphere is due to the fact that Diversity is the most important core values Target has. Target has won numerous awards for diversity the two most notable awards are; Top Employee by Black Collegian 2008/2009, and a Top 25 Noteworthy Companies for Diversity 2009. (Target Report 7)

Expect More Pay Less

It is Target's mission to make their stores a preferred shopping destination for shoppers by offering excellent guest service, continuous innovation, and outstanding value by consistently fulfilling their Expect More Pay less brand promise.

Since 1962 Target has gone head to head with competitors such as Wal-Mart and K Mart according to Tunheim Partners case study. Target needed to define a strategy to make Target stores stand out. In order to differentiate themselves from their competitors, Target had to step back and look at the whole picture. They came up with “Expect more Payless” slogan, successfully joining the position of a discount retailer. The slogan is a great draw for shoppers who want popular designer items, for a much lower price. More importantly Target delivers on its promise, offering lower prices, while maintaining clean stores and a helpful staff. (Tunheim Partners)

Why We Like Shopping Here

One major strategy of target is one we all should learn from. It started with the history of the company and filling the needs of the suburban communities and innovative thinking that brings what the people want and sticking to it with strict guidelines. From their department store background to building the first shopping malls and discount super stores, Target is an original thinking company that caters to the shopper by maintaining a department store atmosphere.

The Shopping Experience is so important that we decided to do an actual survey of customers for our data. These are random customers at the Target store in San Dimas, CA. The N1 through N8 represent 8 different customers asked the same questions while shopping in the store. The table shows that for the most part the Target strategy is working most people surveyed enjoyed shopping the good selections, thought they have competitive pricing on quality items , friendly stores and employees, and above all that they all thought the store was clean. Clean Stores and Restrooms

The shopping Isles are always clean and orderly as well as designed with a layout that fits the shoppers browsing styles. They also are highly focused on the outward appearance from their department store beginnings, this keep the customers feeling comfortable and safe as if in a department store atmosphere. (Target)

Details including clean and maintained bathrooms are part of the shopping experience. Not only do they fill their soap dispensers with the latest soaps that kill 99% of bacteria, they also have personnel that checks the stores restrooms every hour to ensure the cleanliness of the bathrooms. There is an internal group that polices the stores looking for cleanliness as a top priority among other things, but constant cleanliness is the goal for all stores.

Secure Shopping

Target is committed to ensuring a safe and secure shopping and working environment for their guests and team members. They have an extensive security system and procedures in place to ensure the safety and security of everyone in the store. Target believes that their store designs, security technology and staffing gives them a distinct competitive advantage and helps they be better neighbors in the communities they are in. Target stores have uniformed security officers on constant patrol in and outside of the store. They also have “Plain Clothed Officers” known as Lost Prevention Officers. These roam the stores acting as if they are shopping to keep closer eyes on the public to ensure they are honest and safe. (Target.com)

Target law enforcement efforts date back over a decade. These efforts intensified after our September 11, 2001 attacks on the US. “In many ways, Target is actually a high-tech company masquerading as a retailer” said Nathan K. Jarvis, Target's vice president of government affairs. Target has used their in-store practices such as inventory-tracking technologies to increase the business of identifying and locating criminals. What originally was created simply to assist Target store's to investigate issues involving theft and fraud within Target's own properties, has become one of the world's top forensic labs, offering pro bono services to law enforcement agencies across the country. Target forensics has assisted agencies such as the United States Secret Service, Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, and The Federal Bureau of Investigations. (Wikipedia.org)

Computer screens at Target's forensics lab promote its ties with law enforcement.Target Forensics has one of the most advanced crime labs in 14 the country. Over the past few years they have taken a leading role in teaching government agencies how to fight crime using the state-of-the art technology used in over 1400 of their stores. Targets efforts have touched agencies locally, statewide and federally. Besides running Target forensic lab located in Minneapolis and a secondary lab located in Las Vegas, Target has assisted in coordinating national undercover investigations. 1. Low Prices

Target takes an immense amount of pride in offering its guest's many products for a lower price. With that Target has developed many target brands featured in all of their Target and Super Target stores all over the country. They keep a close eye on their competition by offering Price matching and advertized pricing that seems to edge out the other discount chains.

2. Variety and Quality

Target stores have a wide array of products that includes Clothing, Electronics, and Furniture, Baby toys, toys for kids of all ages, Home décor, Cookware, Beauty products, and Video Games. The clothing products are from baby clothes to men and woman's apparel and they are generic store brand clothes to name brand clothes like Converse and Merona. Electronics are everything from small items like cameras, computers to large screen TV's. Furniture includes items from baby furniture to bedroom, home office and bathroom fixtures. The toys in Target stores are educational and fun, also toys that are age appropriate for older children as well. Their home décor section is fabulous, with unique designs for our modern homes. They have a vide variety of beauty products that include hair care products to make-up. The electronics department is always stat of the art as it includes the latest music, videos and games.

Target has a decent variety of food that ranges from grocery store items to frozen dinners and hot foods. Super Targets include the likes of Starbucks Coffee, Pizza Hut Express, and a Target Hot Deli counter. Not only do Super Targets provide their customers with the ability to purchase food in their stores they also provide the customers with a roomy and very accessible place to eat. (Target.com)

Target Brands and Hired Designers

Some of the private labels you will see a Target stores grocery sections are, Market pantry, Archer Farms, Ming Tsai. Other brands you will find in their hard lines are, Up-and-Up (this is Targets newest introduction, replacing the Target brand), Re Design, Room Essentials (featured in domestics), and True Tech (featured in Electronics).You will also see many designer brands in Targets clothing departments, featuring brand such as Converse and Mossimo, in addition, designers include Orla Liely, Liz Lange, and Thomas Obrien. Home décor designers are such as Rachel Ashwell and Isabelle de Borch Grave. They have seasonal designers like Sean Conway (patio furniture), Michael Graves, and Victoria Hagan. Target has exclusive makeup designers Sonia Kashuk, and Jemma Kidd. It is clearly seen that Target partners with some of the best designer to offer high quality products at discount prices. In 2009 Target decided to give the Target Brand a new look. So, they re-launched the Target brand, giving it a new name Up-and Up and a new look. Target brand no longer feature the Target bull's-eye we have all known for years, it is now a simple arrow you will see throughout Target stores. According to Target.com, Target began phasing out the bulls -eye in March of 2009, now consumers can find over 800 items featuring the new Up-and Up logo. It spans more than 40 categories including, healthcare, beauty, baby, and personal care. According to an article in Private Label Magazine in April 2009, private label sales have increased 31.5% as of March 2009. Some of Target strategies have been creating snack or trial sized packages of different products, and then placing them at the registers. Target also fills their seasonal displays with a myriad of colors and styles unique to themselves for us to choose from, keeping it fresh and vibrant. Their choice of colors and Target bulls-eye catches your attention and give you a mindset that this is the place to shop. If you join all this with the friendly employees and great service, you can see that the marketing strategy is to constantly tailor the stores to the shopping experience.

They always have the right decorations for the right time of the year. Holiday decorations include the like a Christmas such as indoor Christmas tree lights, outdoor Christmas lights, wreaths, garlands and Christmas trees. Halloween decorations are a wonderful delight unmatched even by Party City, And Thanksgiving decorations that go beyond the ordinary to help enhance the warmth of your home during the holiday season. For holiday shopping online they offer free gift wrapping with an order of $50 dollars or more. They wrap presents for all occasions just click add gift wrap to your order and they do the rest. 1. On The Cutting Edge of Style

We love the Target commercials; they are always entertaining and fun to watch. I believe they rank up there with Carl's Junior and Budweiser in their ability to gain and maintain our attention. They are very careful in choosing a company to create commercials as I found on Wikipedia. Only the most creative and modern writers will meet the standard, but well worth the scrutiny, as we honor the commercial on YouTube and other video sites. Some of the TV commercials were made by Rhythm & Hues Studios hired in 2005. Its commercials feature modernized versions of Busby Berkley, choreography, and hip hop music. (wikipedia.org)

2. The Red and White Bulls Eye

They also in 1999 created a mascot from an English Bull Terrier who goes by the name of “Arielle”. Another huge success story as the public love the new mascot and he stars in various commercials and is treated as a celebrity. (Target.com)

Skateboarding, Snowboarding, Freestyle Motocross and BMX are part of store's action sports line-up. Target stores announced its entry into action sports with an impressive array of action sport athlete sponsorships, including: Shaun White, Nate Adams and the Hoffman Bikes Factory Team. Target will support these athletes during their appearances at competitions, exhibitions, community events and special store programs.

Shaun White -- Skateboard/Snowboarder is a Fifteen-year-old prodigy in both snowboarding and skateboarding. Target will support Shaun's endeavors and presence in both snowboarding and skateboarding. Shaun earned his reputation as one of the world's top snowboarders when he won the 2002 Vans Triple Crown of Snowboarding. Shaun is one of the featured skateboarders on Tony Hawk's Gigantic Skate Park Tour and Tony Hawk's Boom Boom Huckjam Tour.

"Athletes like Shaun White do not come along very often," said John Remington, vice president of events marketing and communications for Target Corporation. "It's very exciting to be a part of Shaun's career in its early stages and we look forward to supporting him as his riding continues to contribute to the evolution and growth of snowboarding and skateboarding."

Nate Adams -- Freestyle Motocross 18-year-old freestyle motocross phenomenon was recently awarded the 2002 World Championship Freestyle Motocross Title. As part of the growing and popular arena of action sports, he continues to amaze crowds around the country with his leading repertoire of intricate motorcycle tricks, including Nate's signature jump "The Tsunami."

Mat Hoffman is a living legend and a pioneer in the sport of BMX Freestyle. For over twenty-five years, Mat has been dedicated to breaking down boundaries and building up the platform for today's action athletes. 3. Local Sponsorships like The Los Angeles County Museum of Art

Another one of Target sponsors is the Museum of art in Manhattan, Target host free Friday night offering all visitor in to the museum free of charge after 4 pm on Friday. Target also offers free first Saturdays at the Brooklyn Museum. This program is similar to the program Target offers at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art called free after five. This program offers free admission to the museum during weekdays after five; this allows family's to spend time together, while saving money and teaching their children. (Target.com)

Conclusions and Recommendations

Our Research has been extensive in finding the truth about Target Corporation, and we have concluded that it is indeed a remarkable company with a genuine interest in its customer base. It has proven itself in every aspect of what we would look for in a company and we can honestly say that if we were so lucky to own a company such as this we would hope is was run in the same manner.

1. They have an impressive historical background experience that keeps them constantly looking ahead. This forward thinking makes them a great addition to any stock portfolio.

2. This corporation has proven itself with its concern for the communities where is does business and the environment that it effects.

3. We have also concluded that Target is a great place to find a lifetime of employment, with job security and great benefits. We also found it is a satisfying work environment for executives and regular employees.

4. What we really found to be expressive is their marketing strategy is nothing more than hard work with a strong work ethic struggling to keep prices low. Cleaning, organizing and creating a pleasant shopping experience are their top priorities.

5. We lastly found that they advertize with only the most talented firms that stay on top of the advertizing game. We are also impressed with their choice in sponsorships of teams and athletes.

Because of our overwhelming positive findings, we recommend that you “Lucy DeCaro” start shopping at Target if you do not already do so. In addition, if you already shop there you can rest assured that you are getting the most for your money. And, don't forget the profits are shared with the community and environment where you live.
