Masidale campaign is run and headed by Spur. This campaign runs a fun day were it teaches children between the ages of 10-13 life skills and how to deal with certain things in life and self confidences. Pick ‘n Pay is a company well known for being committed to their CSRs.

Pick ‘n Pay also today run many well known socially involved organizations, which shows that these organizations are and have been sustainable.

These being organizations such as:

STARFISH FOUNDATION, this organization helps support children in orphanages that do not have parents or any other source of support. The organization only works with children in South Africa. This organization is one that is sustainable and has been sustained. This being because with supporting the children they create an environment where the children can learn and be taught, making the children able to sustain their own lives. The starfish foundation is also one that has been running for a long time and helping many orphans in South Africa.

MWEB STATIONERY DRIVE, raise money to provide stationery for underprivileged children as well as collect stationery. This drive is not sustainable in terms of the children this being because they do not guarantee that the child is going to get stationery every year. But in terms of the drive its self it is sustainable.

The way this is done is by the green bag solution, Pick ‘n Pay produces material green bags that shoppers can use instead of plastic bags. The organization is very sustainable not only in Pick ‘n Pay but also to the environment. This organization helps decrease the harm that is being done to the environment.

SUNFLOWER FUND is another organization that is very popular in society and is also run by Pick ‘n Pay. This organization helps raise money for cancer patients. This organization would not be sustainable to cancer patients because there is no guarantee that the same patient will always get the funds.

Socio -Economic issues and strategies used by Spur:

Spurs CRS is mostly Poverty based.

During the fun day theses children play sports that are given a free meal, they get to meet other children and they are taught life skills, how to be self confidence and ways to deal with issues that might arise in their lives.

This is a very sustainable project that has been running for many years, this is also sustainable within Spur amongst employees, were employees want to be involved on a constant level.

The campaign is also sustainable in the lives of the children involved this is because, these children are taught skills that will help them for the rest of their lives to ensure that they do not have to be dependent on other people to support them.

Socio -Economic issues and strategies used by Pick ‘n Pay:

The CRS that Pick ‘n Pay is most focused on is Environmental issues

Kids in Parks is Pick ‘n Pays most sustainable environmental campaign and is also well known campaign in society

This campaign which was invented and is run by Pick ‘n Pay came up with the Green bag solution.

The green bag solution decreases the amount plastic that is produced, by producing environmentally friendly, material green shopping bags that last longer and are better for shoppers and the environment.

Kids in Parks campaign, through the green bag solution have raised an enormous amount of money that is donated to under privileged people.

This money is received from people buying the green bags to be more environmentally friendly this showing Pick ‘n Pays commitment to improving the state of the environment.

Spur code of Ethics:

Spur requires from their employee’s high ethical and moral values, they also promise their consumers high ethical and moral standards.

Spur has three main aspects of their code of ethics these are ‘Integrity, Honesty and Good Faith’.

In their code of ethics Spur promises not to bridge or forget any of these values under any circumstance.

The Spur Company has defiantly acted on their word to be honest and have integrity and good faith.

This could be judged by the type of company Spur is and the amount of supporters and fans, restaurants under the Spur Corporation name have.

The practice of ethical in Spur is taken seriously and employees are specially trained to reflect the values and ethical behavior that Spur would like to uphold.

Pick ‘n Pay Code of Ethics:

Pick ‘n Pay has based their code of ethics within and this code of ethics states that all employees are expected to follow this code at all times.

The code of ethics states that all employees will always act with honesty, integrity and respect and will make that these values are applied in all situations.

To ensure employees fully understand what is expected of them, and to ensure that, Pick ‘n Pays ethical values are held up and reflected through all employees and not only in the workplace, Pick ‘n Pay sends their employees on compulsory course teaching Pick ‘n Pays code of ethics.

The three main values in Pick ‘ n Pay are Honesty, Integrity and Respect and Pick ‘n Pay has shown that they act on and practice their ethical values through the corporate social responsibilities that they are involved in and taken on.

Pick ‘n Pay has influenced, helped and contributed in many crises and this is acknowledged by society.

Being involved in social issues shows that pick ‘n Pay is an ethical company that does not believe the only responsibility of the business is to make a profit.

The only negative aspect is that it is evident that not all employees uphold the ethical values of Pick ‘n Pay, meaning that all employees are not socially responsible eg. Employees such as the cashiers, or the truck drivers.

From the code of ethics of Pick ‘n Pay, it is evident that they are a loyal and honest company with integrity, and they are not only interested in ways to improve their company but also ways to improve and give back to their country and society.

Analysis of information, comparisons and opinion:

Both Spur and Pick ‘n Pay has shown their loyalty to their customers and are both involved in the solving of social issues in society.

Spur sponsors extraordinary amounts of money to different fundraising campaigns, to make a difference in society.

Pick ‘n Pay runs and governs many organizations that work towards, improving society, teaching people skills and taking care of the environment.

By comparing Spur and Pick ‘n Pay one can see that Spur is more socially responsible and is more involved in caring for the environment and teaching people and improving their living conditions than Spur is.

Spur only has one socially involved organization that they are a part of but this organization is not run by Spur, meaning that they are not directly contributing and showing an interest in social issues or their social responsibilities.

Pick ‘n Pay shows a direct interest in social responsibilities and encourages employees from Pick ‘n Pay to go out and interact with people within society, making a direct impact and difference.

By Spur not being directly involved in their social responsibilities it appears as if Spur uses being socially responsible as more of a strategy to get a good business image and more customers, than Spur actually being committed and wanting to give back to the people that support them.

So it is evident that Pick ‘n Pay is more socially responsible than Spur is, and has a better image and is better known for being socially responsible than Spur is.

Discussion and conclusion:

It is visible that companies that are listed on the JSE and companies that are popular in society are more socially responsible than other or most companies.

It is visible that Pick ‘n Pay and Spur are socially responsible, and that being socially responsible is one of their main priorities.

This is because of the level of trade and level of competition that these companies are in, or operate at.

Both Pick ‘n Pay and Spur are leading companies in their different trade industries, and it is more expected of Pick ‘n Pay and Spur to be socially responsible than is expected from most other companies that are at lower levels of trade.

In Pick ‘n Pay and Spur being socially responsible is one of their main priorities and much effort and commitment is put into being socially responsible.

Being socially responsible promotes a good business images for both Pick ‘n Pay and Spur, this is done through the businesses interest on the environment and, people in society that support them.

Coming to a conclusion using the above research, it is apparent that Pick ‘n Pay is a better governed company. Especially in their social responsibilities.

Pick ‘n Pay is better governed in terms of social responsibilities, customer care, business ethics, their business image and caring for their employees.

This does not mean that Spur is not a good company, but Pick ‘n Pay is a better governed company and shows more interest in all business environments and all aspects of the business, than Spur does.
