MLA AI reference generator

MLA’s revised August 2025 guidance starts with a description of the generated material or prompt, not an AI author. Include the tool, model where known, publisher, date and preferably a stable sharing URL. Also describe substantial AI use in your work.

Enter your source details

Use the details on the source. * marks required details. Leave optional fields blank if they do not apply.

AI tool and output

For example, ChatGPT. Enter a known model separately below.

For example, OpenAI or Anthropic.

For example, GPT-4o. The entry will label this as the model.

Describe the material you are citing. Keep the wording that identifies it.

Dates and access

Enter the date the text was generated, in YYYY-MM-DD format.

Use the stable sharing link to the chat, or the tool homepage if sharing is unavailable.

Optional wording for later citations. Use enough words to identify the source.
