3         Sustainable Tourism

3.1        what does it mean? In the context of the UNWTO’s priorities above, relate this to your own country’s Tourism Industry.

Today, tourism is one of world’s fastest growing industries and also a major source of income for various countries. This is a people oriented industry so this industry also offers various jobs that further helped revitalize local economies. Sustainable tourism is one of the concepts of visiting somewhere as a tourist and then trying to make a positive impact on the environment, economy as well as society(Sharma and Parkash, 2018). It has been investigated that without travel there is no tourism so, the sustainable tourism is tightly linked to one of the concepts of sustainable mobility. Thus, sustainable tourism is one of the ways of travelling as well as exploring a destination at the similar time of respecting its environment, culture and people(H.Lalnunmawia, 2019).

UNWTO is stated as World Tourism Organization that is further a United Nations Specialized Agency. This agency is responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable as well as universally accessible tourism. This is one of the international organization in the field of tourism that promotes tourism as one of the key drivers of economic growth, inclusive development & environmental sustainability to offer better leaders(Sharma and Parkash, 2018).

3.1.1          Environmental resources and its impact on Indian Tourism Industry

The tourism industry in India have several positive as well as negative impact on the environment which are discussed below-

Positive impact-

Sound environmental management of tourism facilities and especially hotels can increase the benefits to natural environment. The development of tourism industry has moved Indian government towards the direction that lead towards the significant improvement in environmental management. With early planning for tourism development, expensive mistakes and damages could be prevented together with avoidance of gradual deterioration of environmental assetsthose are significant to Indian tourism(Sharma and Parkash, 2018). The Indian tourism has the potential to increase public appreciation of the environment and even to spread awareness of environmental issues when it brings into closer contact with environment and nature.

Negative impact-

Continuous development in the field of tourism might put pressure on natural resources at the time when it increases the consumption in areas where the resources are already scarce. The Indian tourism industry generally overuses water resources for hotels, golf courses, swimming pools as well as personal use of water by tourists. Thus, this issue might result in shortage of water as well as degradation of water supplies together with generating a greater volume of waste water. Increased construction of tourism as well as recreational facilities has increased the pressure on these resources and on scenic landscapes as well(Sharma and Parkash, 2018). Forests often suffer negative impacts of tourism in form of deforestation that is further caused by the fuel wood collection as well as land clearing. Furthermore, Indian tourism has great pressure on local resources such as food, energy and other raw materials that might be in short supply so, greater extraction as well as transportation of these resources would exacerbates the physical impacts associated with their exploitation(Sharma and Parkash, 2018).

3.1.2          Respect the socio-cultural authenticity of host communities and its impact on Indian Tourism Industry

The Indian tourism could turn local cultures into commodities when the traditional ethnic rites, religious rituals and festivals are reduced and sanitized to conform to tourist expectations basically resulting in reconstructed ethnicity(Sharma and Parkash, 2018). Adapting cultural manifestations to the tastes of tourists or even performing shows as if they were real life that constitutes staged authenticity. Thus, tourism could cause change or loss of local value brought about by various closely related influences. Sacred sits as well as objects might not be respected at the time when they would perceive as goods to trade(Alliance, 2015). The chances of cultural clashes are high in Indian tourism that further might lead towards the occurrence of issue such as economic inequality.

3.1.3          Building partnerships with the non-governmental Organizations (NGOs)and its impact on Indian Tourism Industry

It has been investigated that Non-government organizations plays a vital role in coastal tourism management and their major tasks includes- ensuring the consideration of interests of all stakeholders, initiation of consumer societies, assistance of government in developing a standard for responsible tourism, assistance of government in conducting tourism and environmental awareness programs among local communities as well as tourism in India at large scale. It has been analyzed that in cooperation with academic, regulators, journalists, NGO’s could contribute to the development of plans and policies for the coastal tourism industry(Sharma and Parkash, 2018).

3.1.4          The education advancing tourism’s contribution to poverty reduction and development and its impact on Indian Tourism Industry

Tourism has been an important component of economic development strategies of India. International organizations have identified tourism as an engine of growth to better assist the poor areas of the country in reducing poverty. At the time, when the tourism is used as one of the growth engines to provide better assistance in poverty assistance, there might be several advantages over several forms of economic stimuli. The main reason behind this argument is that the tourists consumes a collaboration of services as well as non-traded goods locally from one supplier to another(Croes, 2014). This raises the need to trained the key personnel who are involved in Indian tourism about the way how to contribute within the way of poverty reduction in the country and its impact on Indian tourism industry.

3.2        Are sustainable and responsible tourism the same? Give relevant examples to identify and demonstrate the differences.

No, sustainable tourism is not similar to responsible tourism of the country. The main aim of sustainable tourism is to make a positive social, economic, as well as environmental impact on distinct host destinations. On the other hand, responsible tourism aims to foster positive social, economic, as well as environmental impact on distinct host destinations. The difference is ere between responsible entities such as in case of sustainable tourism, the actions of stakeholders as well as political leaders who work for the improvement of the industry by fairy distributing the alleviating poverty as well as redistributing profit, implementation of social protection measures and introduction stable employment whereas in case of responsible tourism, a single individual is responsible to handle the tourism. In context to responsible tourism, the examples are- social development & skill development, reduction in water, energy consumption rate ad waste whereas in case of sustainable tourism, the examples include less CO2 emission and low carbon footprint(ArissaFram, 2016).

3.3        What are the sustainable tourism global trends and cite an example(s) from your home country?

According to (ZohebDavar, 2017), tourism industry is male dominated in India at higher extent. In context to sustainable tourism, one initiated global trend is battery based rickshaw that needs not to run through fuel and further it results in reduced global warming level that would enhance the overall experiences of all Indian tourists. Initiative to evolve and use battery based rickshaw would result in reduced global warming level as well as CO2 pollution rate. In India, tourism is one of the biggest and increasingly growing industry that further add value to economic development of the country. This initiative has been taken by Indian government to reduce the environmental impact of tours and traveling industry. This is just a start-up as presently, this trend has been following by some cities of the country and slowly it would be the trend of the country.

3.4        What are the sustainable tourism global challenges and cite examples from your home country?

In Indian domestic tourism, the amenities at various tourist locations as well as en route are not upgraded so needs improvement that include drinking water, first aid etc. In order to harness India’s tourism potential, several efforts are being taken for opening new destination as well as exploring niche segments. Furthermore, the infrastructural facilities like- road connectivity, air and hospitality services at these destinations and the connecting cities are inadequate so, this remains a major hurdle for the development of tourism industry(H.Lalnunmawia, 2019). The infrastructure requirements for the travel and tourism would range from physical infrastructure such as part of entry to modes of transport to urban infrastructure like- telecommunications, access to road electricity as well as telecommunications. The poor infrastructure is one of the another major cause why most international tourists has been skipping the industry. In India, there is diversity in regional languages due to which the foreign tourists face difficulty in stating their problem of communication with locals(ZohebDavar, 2017).

4         Conclusion

From the findings of the above report, it can be concluded that in India, continuous growth could be seen in tourism industry. Through detailed investigation, it has been identified that in India tourism industry is male dominant so the government have to make some efforts and initiative to make a balance in this field. Adapting cultural manifestations to the tastes of tourists or even performing shows as if they were real life that constitutes staged authenticity. Thus, tourism could cause change or loss of local value brought about by various closely related influences.Increased construction of tourism as well as recreational facilities has increased the pressure on these resources and on scenic landscapes as well. Forests often suffer negative impacts of tourism in form of deforestation that is further caused by the fuel wood collection as well as land clearing. Thus, at last it can be concluded that government need to make some initiative towards the way to improving the tourism sector in India.
