1.2 Advocacy practice about the incorporation of New Zealand strategy
Health and wellbeing
A person who is living with a disability might need extra help for their better health. Health care assistant plays a vital role to maintain the health and wellbeing of the client. For the disability people, they get difficulties to carry out everyday tasks for themselves. We have to recorded and report if there is any change in their health and wellbeing to which we support. We can involve the client in community activities like, art and craft and different games which may improve their living style. We can promote healthy behavior by maintaining diet plan and support in their daily living activities. If we are caring the young people them we can do self-care plan which can help to enhance their health and wellbeing and manage their stress. We can develop a regular sleep routine and diet plan to maintain health and wellbeing. Encourage them to involve or engage with positive friends and family. We can engage in reflective practices like meditation, bus trip with another client, church/mosque/temple and yoga.
Education
Education is the key priorities for every human being to maintain quality of life. We have to give education about their condition, treatment, further possible result and side effect of treatment to maintain quality of life. We have to orient then about policy and procedure of the facility. During care also we have to educate them about the benefit of having care. We have to give educated them about local health service and how to access their and what kind of support given by the facility to access. According to their disability (intellectual, physical and sensory impairment), we must be given education for disabled client because in intellectual disability they have a problem in learning so that they need extra support. We have to promote alternative education to the young client by providing awareness programmer and involving in different service. The caregiver also needs to inform about how support will be provided.
Right protective and justice
All people have the right to be treated respectfully which means we have to call them by their preferred name and considering their culture when giving care and providing support. They have the right to get quality health care without discrimination because of race, religion, gender and national origin. Caregiver must provide fair treatment and care with respect and dignity; they have the right to know about their condition and care plan. They have the right to complain if they are not satisfied with the care plan and service. They have a right to make their own choice and decision about their care and treatment which they are received, as long as those decisions are within the boundaries of the law. Because of the impairment, people didn’t speak up for their right and didn’t get justice. In this situation, the caregiver should provide their right and justice by supporting them without discrimination because of their impairment as the same base as another client. (Ministry of social Development, 2016)
Accessibility
The caregiver should give the same opportunity to access goods and services in a similar way as other clients. We should provide a fully accessible telephone service to the client. We can offer to the client to communicate by email if telephone communication is not suitable because the different client has a different disability like sensory impairment. We should give fully accessible to use assistive devices to maintain independence. We should give full access to goods, housekeeping service, transportation and social activities without any discrimination. We have to provide access to support care including, emergency call system, bathing, dressing and needed assistance with eating, walking and toileting by maintaining the client safety.
Attitude
The caregiver should give equal respect to the disable people as same as other non-disable clients. The attitude contributes to the client’s quality of life by the way you communicate with and support people. Sometime caregiver ignore disable client and didn’t give quality support as same as non-disable client because of their impairment. (Careerforce, 2011)
