As our government system formed throughout the years, the Democratic party we have today has remained the same ever since the eighteen sixties. This party began in the big city, such as the State of New York, which then ruled other states like Connecticut, Indiana and New Jersey which the democratic party still counts on still to this day (Storrs 20). Democracy is a political system in which the population of the country participates; there are competitive elections and both human and civil rights are protected. A few basic elements of democracy is that the people choose their government by a fair election process, government is based on the consent of the people and human rights, civil rights and freedom of speech are protected (Zitko). In the Democratic party, the people representing it tend to be more liberal. In terms liberalism seeks for highest of things like religion, for philosophical views of the world, and different morals conceptions of the good (Rawls 4). Democracy quest for security is that global security is  assured better through an international order based on shared democratic values and that a legitimate national security and public order depend upon a democratic framework of public authority (Luckham 3). Morally, the democratic party mostly doesn’t reflect on religious views but to have the rights to freedom of speech and choice. At this point of modern era time, such as abortion the democratic party mostly argues on women having the right to pro choice . Democracy is about giving each person a dignified voice in the decision making processes in those institutions that regulate in their daily lives (Dewey). This issue connects to the way Democrats stand for government supported programs such as Planned Parenthood.

In the United States, the second primary party is the Republican party. In terms republic is the power that is given to an elected official that is nominated by the people. The republican party are both socially liberal and socially conservative but they are mostly focused on a business aspect (Miller 433). Republicanism reflects the ideals of popular sovereignty, which is the premise that legitimate government exists only at the consent of the people; which in the United States the people are the sovereign power (Zitko). Morally most of the Republican party that stands today reflects their morals by the Christian Church on issues such as abortion. They put their beliefs and morals that come from their religious views. In the article of Republican and Democratic Party Coalitions “In 1991, an anti-abortion program called “Operation Rescue” temporarily closed down Wichita’s abortion clinics. This energized social conservatives, who not only participated in larger and larger mass meetings, but also organized the takeover of local politics by electing pro-lifers as precinct committee women and men, by grabbing control of the local party machinery out of the hands of the established moderate forces”. Which continues to talk about how they mobilized christian churches (Miller 440). When it comes to national security in modern times, republicans view revolve around the fourth amendment of the constitutions, which a right that citizens have that secures from unreasonable searches and seizures from their own being such as their house (Constitution).

Since our country is divided into two primary political parties, it’s important to know the similarities and differences between them. As for similarities, both parties encourage citizens to participate in a representational political system, which both parties elect their officials on their interest on how they wish for our government should be govern. The difference is that in a democracy, the people meet and exercise the government in person and as in a republic, they assemble and administer it by their representatives and agents. A democracy, consequently, must be confined to a small spot. A republic may be extended over a large region (Woodbern). This results to being a weakness towards the democratic party and a major strength for the republican. Adding on, the way Hamilton wrote the way of living in a representative democracy to Gouverneur Morris, is the right of election to be well secured and regulated and the exercise of the legislative, executive and judiciary authorities is vested in the selected official, which is chosen but also not so chosen by the people (Hamilton 1777). During election day, the electoral college, the 12th amendment, comes between both parties where both have advantages and disadvantages. The electoral college is where each state has the same number of electoral votes as it has members of congress, which favors larger states (Constitution). Its an advantage to either political party that wins over the big populated states such as New York, California, Texas and Florida (Riggs). As stated in the beginning by Storrs, most of the large states align with the Democratic party from past elections which leaves them at a great advantage. As for the past election two out of the four big states have aligned with the Republican party which left them to winning the election.

Our two main political parties have been explained their differences from each other from how both their views on the United States government should be govern. With their differences of how important they show their point of view on the countries issues on moral, economic, societal, and national security issues.              This research has shown to prove that Republicans are more known as cautious and conventional and embrace economic equity. On the other side, Democrat seems to be more open minded into people’s beliefs and civil rights such as standing for supported programs by the government. Overall both parties have equal advantages and disadvantages that make our governments political system work.
