Introduction
In this Personal Development Plan, I will talk about what actions I will take to improve my academic development, my career progression; what I plan to do once completing my degree. As well as my personal growth. This will be shown with diagrams from a SWOT analysis, a dream board of things I would like to accomplish and a journey map of where I see myself in 5 – 10 year after leaving University.
Academic Development
Goals
My academic goals link to my career, after University I plan on going back to college to do a hair dressing course as that will help my chances get a job. After talking to people in the industry they’ve said that having a background in hair helps a great deal when working on a set or in theater. Recently I was unfortunate enough to be diagnosed with dyslexia. My main target for the upcoming future is to manage my dyslexia and not be held back from things because of my disability. Through research I have discovered that people with Dyslexia are commonly found to more artistic and creative. People with dyslexia tend to incision things as pictures and images, rather than remembering facts and figures. This I can use to my advantage as I am on a creative course and although I still must tackle essays and explain my work, I know I will example mostly in the design and make concepts I will need for my career path.
My learning styles
To the right is a diagram taken from a document we had to complete to find out what our learning style was. As this diagram shows I am more extreme in Pragmatist and Reflector. Being equally strong in both areas means that I approach learning in an impartial and tensive way as well as doing things more than watching and listening. I need to improve on theory learning as people who learn by theory learning are able to concentrate on building general theories instead of focusing on smaller things.

Action
To improve my education, I plan on going to extra lessons in the University and having extra academic support. With my dyslexia writing and reading on purple tinted paper helps make things easier and has less strain on my eyes, going to see a behavioral optometrist will help with this which I plan on making an appointment through the university.
Personal Growth
Goals
My personal goals include accepting my recently diagnosed dyslexia and learning how to use that to my advantage. As well as becoming better with my time management which is a disadvantage of having dyslexia. Also, I hope to travel after I leave university and to meet new people in hopes to overcome my social anxiety, helping me in the long run with my career. In 5 – 10 years’ time I would hope for little things such as living on my own, having a pet dog and possibly have a partner and kids.

This is a screenshot of my interactive dream board, clicking the link will make it interactive on google chrome. This contains some of the things I hope to achieve in 5 – 10 years such as having my own family, be able to drive and own a car. One of the biggest things I hope to achieve is to further my studies so make myself more employable for the future.

Motivation
Motivation is a state of mind to get you to accomplish a task, the task itself can range from doing an assignment to making your bed. For me to become motivated I think of rewards to give myself, every time I complete an assignment, for example, if I clean my apartment then I can watch one episode of ‘Suits’ or I can go out with my friends. But if the task needs more attention; so, writing an essay then I like to split it up into chunks; for every hour or so of work I do, I allow myself a 20 or 30-minute break to relax then start back up again. Sometimes even having music on in the background motivates me but I must spend less than 10 minutes to find the right song to play.

To keep me on track with what I’m doing I find creating lists of what I need to do help. They motivate me to get going on the task that needs to be done although I only create small lists as if they are too long then I can get put off with what I need to do.
Using the google apps to keep track of things are useful as they’re all in one place and easy to change. I often use the keep, calendar and tasks apps

After having to do a personality test online I have discovered that I am an Advocate, which shows me that I’m creative, insightful, determined and passionate. This will help me in my course and in life as being determined will help me get my work done in university to the best of my abilities it will also help me to get work finished on time as once, I set mind to something I’ll get it done. Being insightful can help in my career as I can have a deeper insight as to what a customer or project manager wants from a certain project, it also means I’ll have a greater idea of how to improve work space or work conditions. Although being an Advocate has its disadvantages as I’m sensitive, I always need a cause and I’m a perfectionist. Having these disadvantages means that I could take longer with projects as they must be perfect in my eyes no matter what other people are saying, and I’ll always see things as never actually finished even when they are; this could be a huge draw back in the future as it will hold me back from getting work done. This will be something I have to work on in the future, being able to be happy with the work I’ve done and not picking at little details that might not really matter in the final making process.
Another weakness of being an advocate means that I am extremely private which in my personal life can be a set back as that can cause people to distance themselves from me and being private also means that I bottle things up; to conquer this I could try trusting people more or being more open when it comes to talking about certain things.
Career Progression
Goals
Goals I have for my career after I leave University are to work in another country either on a T.V/film set, although I know that Wales’ TV and film industry is on the rise so working with them on shows would be ideal as a part time job over summer as it would be closer to home. Also working as an apprentice in a theater would help progress my career as this industry is mainly based on who you know, so working in a theater would help me get to know people and improve my skills for when working under pressure.
Action
Working in a different country will be hard at first because there could be a language barrier or a lack of supplies. Although if I do get to travel then I could find work as I go around, I’ve already been in contact with a company in Australia who have given me advice about working in industry. I also have family that are actors and actresses for the BBC which have both said that they would put me in contact with their makeup artists either over summer or after University. There’s also a company called ‘It’s My Shout’ that do short films over the summer all over Wales and they try and help aspiring actors, camera men, makeup artists, producers and directors break into the industry, they work with the BBC, helping people getting in contact with different names. I’m planning on doing that over summer to get me use to working with multiple people and seeing what make up works in the different lighting used. Last year I did get to work on the pilot film doing simple makeup on all the characters under supervisor of makeup artist that do work in the industry, I have also worked with them on different productions within the theater where we filmed.
Conclusion
In conclusion I need to work on my dyslexia and having the confidence to ask for help when I need it. I need to have confidence in my own work as this can hold me back in my studies and in any job I get in the future, I need to have confidence in my own knowledge as I’m a logical learner. Which shows that I like exploring relationships between facts and ideas. I also need to start taking risks when experimenting with new ideas as I don’t like the uncertainty of things maybe going wrong, because a weakness of being a practical learner is having a lack of experience and not having the knowledge to make deductions, but this can be helped if I had the confidence to experiment.
After I leave University, I plan on carrying on my studies to further my employability as well as travelling in between. Going to Pinewood studios to do three-week courses or month-long courses which would help and would be quicker than doing a two to three-year course in college. During my time in University I plan on keeping in contact with a makeup company in Australia, so I could possibly work with them as they have a team in Wales.
