Jerry and Janie Murrell opened their first burger establishment, Five Guys Burgers and Fries, in 1986. The Murrell family has a very simple business philosophy that has worked for them for years. Make great burgers, make great fries and don’t cut corners (Welch, 2010). If you’re going to sell hamburgers and french fries in a restaurant business that is crowded with hamburger/french fry chains, you’d better do hamburgers and french fries better than anyone else (Farfan, 2012). As simple as this may seem, it has taken them from a small chain with six restaurants in the Washington, D.C. area to a well known franchise with over 750 locations (Melnick, 2011).

Five Guys is actively run by the five Murrell sons and is known as a fast casual restaurant rather than a fast food chain. Because they do not concentrate on speed of delivery, the company can concentrate more on the product’s quality (Golembiewski, 2008). Another part of their philosophy that has been part of their success is to “Stick within their own four walls and have the food do the talking for them.” Five Guys does not have an enlarged menu list, they choose to focus on only a few items and serve them to the best of their ability. If they were to add additional items to the menu, you can guarantee that they would only do so if they could serve the uppermost quality product possible (Rosenwald, 2006).

The Murrell’s truly value the people who work for Five Guys. They feel that great employee satisfaction is the key to a great business that can serve quality products. The company does not have a large budget for décor or the interior design of the restaurant. They choose to put those dollars into the employees by offering remarkable incentives that will ensure all workers are performing at their best (Golembiewski, 2008).

When the Murrell’s decided to begin making Five Guys into a franchise chain in 2002, they wanted to maintain as much control as possible so they decided that the best way to govern the people was to limit the number of franchise owners. You can not buy a single Five Guys restaurant; you much purchase at least five, essentially filling up a small territory. This cluster buying strategy is also a way to attract more professional owners.

Five Guys fresh made-to-order burgers with beef that’s never frozen and absurdly large servings of fries have been the recipe to their achievement. They don’t plan on changing their method that has worked for more than two decades, even if they could find products cheaper (Joiner, 2012).

Analyze the original values for the start-up company and it remains strong today.

Five Guys has a strong position on not avoiding its values and morals. The whole business is based on rendering quality product to the customers. They want to ensure they are aligning their values with the customer’s wishes and desires. Glam is nothing they pride themselves on; they are a basic restaurant without a lot of paid advertising to bring in business. The employees of the company are also believed to be the true champions within the organization that makes them so successful (Kondalkar, 2009).

One of the original values for Five Guys is to maintain the quality of the products. This proves to be the key area that allows the company to grow and develop incessantly. This respective organization accentuates more on rendering top-notch products to the consumers (Golebiewski, 2008). At most fast food chains, the food waits for you, but at Five Guys, you wait for the food which means you will receive a burger just coming off the grill. People can appreciate that kind of special quality and do not mind paying the higher than most fast food prices to receive just that each time (Yu, 2009).

Another one of the original values that still works well for Five Guys is their ability to use the food to market the products and brand for them. The Murrell’s do not use mass advertising vehicles to get the word out about their restaurant. They feel that word of mouth and their quality products is all they need and it is been a tremendous savings to the company because as we all know, marketing campaigns can become expensive (Yu, 2009).

The last value that Five Guys believe in is its employees. The employees of the company are well-treated. The pay and bonuses that all employees receive is great incentive to keep good employees around and challenge them to perform at their best potential. Due to this, only the best possible resultants can be experienced (Kondalker, 2009). Five Guys prefer a real and welcoming environment in their restaurants instead of the mediated and staged approach that we see all too often. The employees are encouraged to be personable and avoid scripted greetings (Weise, 2011).

Enumerate three (3) factors that contributed to Five Guys’ success in such a short time and what effect, if any, external markets had on these factors.

Three of the factors that contribute to Five Guys’ success in such a short time are the focus on quality, the strong management team and the customer engagement.

“At Five Guys, we go overboard on the food.” The reason their burgers are so tasty is quality control. The beef is 80% lean and never frozen. They can afford to put more money into the quality of their food because they do not have these outrageous advertising and marketing expenses (“Five reasons why”, 2010).

“Treat people right and they will walk out the door and sell for you,” stated Jerry Murrell (“Five reasons why”, 2010).

Assess how ethical and social practices are part of the Five Guys’ culture and provide examples to support your choices.

Each organization should feel the importance of ethics and morals and ethical and social practices are part of the Five Guys’ culture. The company does well at fulfilling employees and society’s needs and requirements (McLean, 2006). This adds strength and fortification to the company itself. Because they maintain this alignment, the business practices go on smoothly and effortlessly. It can then be summed up that Five Guys understands the customer’s requirements and follows ethical approaches while implementing them (Haneberg, 2005).

Five Guys are committed to further developing their accountability standards and procedures specifically to address our contractor’s compliance with the Transparency in Supply Chain Act, as well as an action plan to ensure our company employees and management, who have direct responsibility for supply chain management, receive training on human trafficking and slavery. By making this ethical decision to monitor these standard is just one more way that Five Guys shows the community and society as a whole that they are all about quality (“Disclosure of five,” 2011).

I conclude that the Murrell family has had great success with Five Guys Burgers and Fries. They have maintained simple but strong values that have made the business thrive over the years. Without much marketing effort Five Guys is now mentioned along with other fast food chains as a place with premium service and quality food. Five Guys ensure their duty and service to the communities by always making ethical decisions that will benefits all not just their bottom line.
