The American Civil War had a massive impact on progressives. Progressives are when any political movement that wants to change government for the better. Progressivism includes our Republic and Democracy party. During 1861 to 1865 in America, there was tension between the northern and southern states because of slavery. Slavery was when an African American was bought from a white American and the African American was forced to work under harsh conditions and with low or no pay. The Republic and Democracy party affected the American civil war so for that reason it was a turning point in U.S history because the American civil war ended slavery, the reconstruction era and states’ rights.
First of all, the Republic and Democracy party had an impact on the American civil war because of the end of slavery. The Republic party was fighting to protect the rights of African Americans during and after the Civil War. While the Democracy party was all for slavery. Slavery was a problem that started in 1619 in America and it did not officially end until 1865. Although, in the informative article by History.com Editors “Slavery in America” it states that “Between 1774 and 1804, all of the northern states abolished slavery, but the so-called ‘peculiar institution’ of slavery remained absolutely vital to the South.” The Republican party was the southern states that were also called the Confederacy and these are 11 states few of these states include Texas, Alabama, and Florida and their president was Jefferson Finis Davis. The 2 different parties were separated but eventually president of the Union, Abraham Lincoln wanted the 2 parties to become 1 again and that caused the American civil war. While the Democracy party were the northern states that were also called the Union and a few of these 20 states included the states of New York, Pennsylvania, and Oregon. With more time passing eventually Abraham Lincoln put in the Confiscation Acts and Emancipation Proclamation and ended all slavery in 1885.
For example, the Republic and Democracy party had an impact on the American civil war because of the reconstruction era. The Reconstruction era was when the South was divided into military districts for the supervision of elections to set up new state governments. The Reconstruction era was started by Abraham Lincoln during the American civil war but not cared about until after the American civil war later in 1865. Also in the informative article by History.com Editors “Republican Party” it states that “Throughout the Civil War, Lincoln and other Republicans began to see the abolition of slavery as a strategic move to help them win the war … Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, and by war’s end, the Republican majority in Congress would spearhead the passage of the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery.” The president of the Union, Abraham Lincoln saw the Reconstruction era as a way to get rid of slavery and find victory in the American civil war. When Abraham Lincoln got rid of slavery by putting the Emancipation Proclamation and then the 13th Amendment was passed and got rid slavery completely and the Confederacy and Union got back together into the United States. If the Reconstruction era never happened then the Confederacy and the Union would still have been separated even after the American Civil war.
In addition, the Republic and Democracy party had the impact on the American civil war because of states’ rights. States’ rights are the rights that are retained by the governments of a federal union under a federal constitution. Not every state has the same rights because each state can have different rights. For example, in the informative article by Historynet.com “Causes Of The Civil War” it states that “In the Civil War era, this struggle focused heavily on the institution of slavery and whether the federal government had the right to regulate or even abolish slavery within an individual state.” The time of the American civil war was when the Confederacy and Union were separated because the Confederacy did not want to be part of the Union. So the Confederate states ’ rights were different than the Union because the Union’s states’ rights were that they were all for slavery. While the Confederate state rights’ did not want to be part of slavery.
In conclusion, this turning point had many benefits and disadvantages in our country. Including that the American Civil War had a massive impact on the Republic and Democracy party. The American civil war ended slavery, caused the reconstruction era and improved states’ rights. The American civil war brought both the Confederate and Union states back together. The American civil war had a massive impact on the Republic and Democracy party.
