The story starts with the sentence “From time to time life sends you someone who is so unexpected that you wonder how you ever lived without them.”(Shah). Tahir is in search of this “someone” who can change his life and is in search for a story that is within his heart. After his family go for a vacation, he also plans to go on a trip. “He made his way to south of Casablanca, on the road to Marrakech.”(Shah). He went on this trip in order to search the story in his heart. He was very restless. He took a lift from a truck that was very old looking and the driver had to stop every half-an-hour to pump air into the tires. Tahir asked the driver weather he had a story in his heart. The driver said that his heart is full of pain due to smoking too much when he was young. Both came out of the truck too push it as it had stopped. Tahir decided not to accompany the driver further and went to a nearby café. It was a nameless café. He was the only customer there and still it took the waiter five minutes to catch his eye. He ordered a coffee. While he was having his coffee a well-dressed personality entered. “He was six foot two, broad shouldered, and moved with confidence”, said Shah. The waiter made the man sit with Tahir as he said that they both had a connection as they both were travelers. The man’s name was Yousef. He explained Yousef that he was in search for a story within his heart. Tahir told him that people of morocco thought that there were streams running under the ground. In exchange Yousef replied that the streams were not of water they were streams of words. He then left the café. Tahir travelled from one community to the other, pleading for stories. He then waited for a bus to Casablanca. He met a police officer and the officer told him that he will not find any bus at this time and so he approached Tahir to come to his home. The officer lived alone and his family was in Marrakech. The officer offered him a mint tea and they started talking. Tahir also told him that he is in search for a story in his heart. The officer told him that he had a story. The officer told him a story of a young man who was very restless and would run from one place to another in search for a teacher who could teach him something of value. He met a sage and the sage told him to go far and wide. He must find the happiest man in the world and when he finds him he must ask him for his shirt. On his travel, he met all sorts of people; some were rich while others were very poor. He asked them if they knew who the happiest man in the world was but they did not know the answer. “He traveled his own kingdom and went to the next kingdom and the next.”(Shah). On his quest, once when he was tired he sat under a tree and slipped of his shoes. While he was resting there he heard a loud laughter noise. According to Shah, “It was so loud that the birds did not roost, but circled round and round. And it was so thunderous that it caused the leaves to fall off the tree.” The man then following the sound of the laughter came near a lake from where he saw a small house on an island. The man could not see a boat so he jumped into the water and swam to the island. After reaching the island the man knocked at the door. When he saw that there was no reply he pushed the door and saw an old man sitting on a carpet. The old man had a big turban on his head. “He was laughing so wildly that tears were rolling down his cheeks.” (Shah). The old man kept laughing and told him replied to him that he was the happiest man in the world. He then noticed that the old man did not wear any shirt. As the old man unwounded his turban, the man realized that he was the sage who had sent him on this journey. He asked the sage that why didn’t tell him that he was the happiest man in the world at the first place. The sage replied that he did not tell him because he wanted him to experience certain things and also wanted him to meet various people and if he would have told him in the first stage he wouldn’t have been cured. Tahir thanked the police officer for the story. He then sat in silence and felt very calm. “His chest began to warm up and his mouth had been closed. His eyes were wide open.” (Shah). He could feel the same story in his heart. The officer then told him that everyone has a story in his or her heart.
