Traditionally, people met their partners through family, friends, or at social events. This type of dating is also known as ‘offline’ or’real-world’ dating. Online dating, on the other hand, entails using websites or apps to find potential partners. This type of dating is becoming more popular, with one out of every five relationships starting online (Finkel et al., 2012).
One advantage of online dating is that it allows people to meet potential partners they would not have met otherwise (Finkel et al., 2012). This is especially useful for those who live in rural areas or have limited social circles. Online dating also gives users more control over the process because they can choose potential partners based on their own criteria (Finkel et al., 2012). What’s more, it can be less intimidating than traditional dating methods because users can communicate via text or online messaging before meeting in person (Toma & Hancock, 2011).
There are, however, some disadvantages to online dating. For example, determining whether a person is being truthful about themselves on their profile can be difficult (Toma & Hancock, 2011). Furthermore, research indicates that online daters are more superficial in their selection criteria than those who meet offline (Toma & Hancock, 2011). This could result in fewer meaningful connections between users.
Online dating has clearly had a significant impact on modern relationships. It has enabled people to meet potential partners they would not have met otherwise, and it has given them a greater sense of control over the process. There are some disadvantages to this type of dating, such as difficulty determining honesty and superficial selection criteria.
