Question

How has new technology impacted on how teams operate within a business?

Answer

The business environment has experienced significant change due to the rapid innovation and expansion of technological capabilities. Through the creation of new technologies, such as Web 2.0, employees now have the opportunity to work closer and more effectively with their colleagues (Pateli & Giaglis, 2005). This has resulted in technology having a huge influence on how organisations operate, with many firms attempting to bring in technological innovations to improve team working abilities (Nonaka, 2008). There a number of ways in which technological innovation has impacted on how teams operate, such as advancements with collaboration. By using certain software packages, employees can now collaborate with one another over wikis, ether pads or email (Melton & Hartline, 2013). These programmes enhance the capabilities of employees, and allow for easier communication and increased synergy amongst individuals working on similar projects. A firm that effectively employs the use of these technological tools can improve their operational efficiency, reduce overheads and even improve revenues (Cross, et al., 2006). These technologies have been found to have numerous benefits for employees and the organisation, but they must also be carefully managed. Certain technology and software packages can be abused by employees, which could potentially result in employee conflicts, a negative working environment or decreased performance (Diaz, et al., 2012). Therefore, it is imperative that top management take the time to train employees on the use of new technologies, whilst creating an accepting and positive environment towards the introduction of new technological tools (Kaufman, et al., 2000).
