- Theology Essays: Pneumatology - Pneuma comes from the Greek and means wind or spirit and ology is a body of thought on a given subject thus theology, sociology etc.. Pneumatology is the theology of the Holy Spirit as understood in the Christian tradition. References to the Spirit of God are to be found throughout the Old Testament, in the New Testament and in the Pauline body of writings. Moltmann (1992) contends that for many years the Holy Spirit was the ‘Cinderella’ of modern theology but the rise of the ecumenical movement and in particular the second Vatican Council saw growing awareness of the role of the Spirit. The subsequent growth of Pentecostal and Charismatic movements has since generated a renewed interest in this neglected area of theology. Read more...
- Theology Essays: Old Testament - The Hebrew Bible, or Old Testament recounts the history, and specifically the religious history of Israel, from the creation to a few hundred years before the birth of Christ. The Old Testament tells the story of the people of Israel and their relationship with God or Yaweh. It tells how Israel sinned against the God who had given her all that she had because the people were unable to keep to their covenant with God (Lemche, 1995). Within the Old Testament the Prophetic writings either address the specific historical conditions in Israel or they refer to social conditions. This paper will examine the books of the Prophet Amos and of the Prophet Isaiah to assess whether the prophets were foretellers or forthtellers. Read more...
- Theology Essays: Familiaris Consortio - In 1981, as a result of a Synod of Bishops specially devoted to further awareness of the (then) current understanding of marriage and the Christian family in the modern world, Pope John Paul II promulgated an apostolic exhortation entitled Familiaris Consortio (On the family). The well-known biographer of John Paul II, George Weigel, claims that in private conversations held with the holy father he came to learn that the pope regarded Familiaris Consortio as one of his favorite letters he had ever written as pope to the family of God (Witness to Hope, 385). - Theology Essays: Christology & Pauline Corpus - How and why is the Christology contained in EITHER the Pauline corpus OR Hebrews distinctive? Christology is a discipline that reflects on the person, works and significance of Jesus in Christian thought and tradition. Christology, Bultmann (1972) argues began with the events of the first Easter and in some Christian thinking, particularly in places of the Pauline corpus, Christ is synonymous with God. Some scholars argue that this was a necessary reaction to Jesus' death by crucifixion because to die that way was regarded as a scandal, it was a death usually imposed on thieves and murderers rather than someone of Jesus' stature. - Theology Essays: Rainbow of Faiths - This paper will evaluate John Hick's defence of his position in his book The Rainbow of Faiths (Hick, J. 1995). Beginning with a brief historical and theological background to the debate the paper will then review Hick's book and assess whether or not Hicks is successful in his defence of his version of religious pluralism which holds that: the great world religions constitute very different but so far as we can tell more or less equally valid ways of conceiving, experiencing, and responding in life to the ultimate reality with which religion is concerned (Hick, 1995:149). - Theology Essays: British Parish Life - Of late British parishes have been in severe crisis: applications for priesthood have dwindled, congregations have in some places halved, churches have been closed and their land sold, and others forced to merge with their neighbors. Many of the Church's critics have implied that this decline is irreversible. Cardinal O'Connor's words suggest something different. They suggest that a fundamental renewal and restructuring of British parishes can reinvigorate pastoral and spiritual life of the Church and that of the parishes themselves. Read more...
