Referencing Software: An Overview

Referencing Software is the generic term given to software packages which allow the student or researcher to manage referencing by use of an electronic database. This is a very attractive option because once a mode of referencing or bibliography has been entered, it can be used repeatedly to reference correctly.

These software packages contain a database which enables most referencing systems to be sourced and applied according to the individual requirements of the student, scholar or researcher.

Many software packages used for referencing via a personal computer are openly available on the market, increasingly used in the Science disciplines in particular, and it is important to note that these are different from bibliographical referencing systems, which are much larger and housed on central computer bases used by libraries etc.

If you are considering purchasing and installing a system of referencing software, ensure that it is capable of fulfilling all your referencing requirements as it is easy to purchase expensive software and then find it does not incorporate the referencing styles you require. For example, some referencing software is only effective if used in conjunction with another such as BIBTeX and LaTeX.
