Chicago Referencing: An Overview
Chicago Referencing comprises both the footnotes and bibliography style, used most frequently in the humanities, and the parenthetic and reference list style, used most frequently in the sciences. The former resembles the Oxford Referencing Style and the latter resembles the Harvard Referencing Style (both of these are covered above).
To cite a book in the Chicago Referencing Style, use this format:
- Author of text in the format of surname and forename followed by a comma
- Title of text in italics followed by a full stop
- Place of publication followed by a colon, publisher followed by a comma, year of publication all in brackets followed by a full stop.
Hence, in Chicago Referencing, a book would be cited thus:
Taylor, John, Modern Referencing, (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1999).
To cite a journal in Chicago Referencing Style follow this format:
- Author of text in the format of surname and forename followed by full stop
- Name of article in quotation marks followed by a full stop
- Title of journal in italics
- Issue number
- Publication date in brackets followed by a colon
- Page numbers followed by a full stop.
Hence, in Chicago Referencing, a journal article would be cited thus:
Taylor, John. Chicago Referencing. Referencing Today 2 (August 2008): 23-37.
To cite an electronic source in Chicago Style, follow this format:
- Author of article in the format of surname and forename followed by full stop
- Name of article in quotation marks followed by a full stop
- Name of website in italics followed by a full stop
- Date of publication on website followed by a full stop
- Date accessed
- Website URL
Hence, in Chicago Referencing, an electronic source would be cited thus:
Taylor, John. Using Chicago Referencing. Referencing Online. 2008. Accessed 6 August 2008 <http://www.referencingonline>
