For proper risk control it is very important to understand and access the risk. The risk must be clearly understood and the proper measures must be in place to tackle the risk. A hotel can improve the security and reduce risk by using various strategies like:
Performing a comprehensive security review - this has to be done by the senior management along with the support of the junior staffs. This activity would help to review the security and understand the risks.
Preparing strategies plans and procedures - this activity is very crucial as it helps to have a well-defined plan of action in place to prevent and manage any risk situation. Proper planning must be in place and the employee must be well aware of them.
Providing systems advice & supervising - the senior management must be directly involved to prevent any risk situation and any queries from the subordinates must be immediately answered. Competitors should also be looked at to understand their security measures and good examples must be implemented.
Training staff on security awareness, management and reaction to events - the staffs must be well trained to prevent any risk situation. Periodic drills must be performed to make the staff well aware of the safety procedures. Help of local security agencies police and fire brigade must be taken while conducting the drills. This would be of great help if any risk has already taken place.
Discreetly investigating suspicious or alleged activities - there should a core team comprising of senior management and the staffs to conduct periodic checks on any suspicious activities. The culprit should be immediately punished and the informers should be handsomely rewarded.
Improving relations with national and international police & security - as discussed above the local police and the agencies should be involved in the drills. They should also be involved in leisure activities at the hotel so as to have a good relationship with them. Any advice from these agencies should be immediately considered.
A hotel can have numerous benefits of having a safe and secure environment. A safe environment helps in deterring criminals and terrorists, improves staff morale, trust and teamwork, and helps to provide better service to guests. The guests feel safe and secure and this brings better publicity and improved reputation, increased occupancy of both local and foreign tourists and increased respect and collaboration with local government and police.
Appreciating the vulnerabilities of a Hotel is vital to providing proper security. Entry and exit monitoring, guest booking in procedures, Key management, CCTV management, Staff vetting, and staff training in security are some of the key areas. Though there are security issues common to all Hotels, only a thorough security review of the individual location and its environment will identify specific issues. Any areas of weakness can be highlighted, countermeasures introduced, procedures developed and staff trained to act professionally in the best interests of Guests, Staff and Proprietors.

Entry of soil in to the hotel building is major problem for the hotel and for housekeeping department of the hotel as well. There is unnecessary involvement of manpower in the continuous cleaning activity due to entry of soil. Hotel property-imported accessories are being damaged due to soil. There are several measures that can be applied to restrict the soil in to the hotel premises:
Walk-off mats inside and outside the building can be placed to reduce the spread of gritty sand so that floors can be saved from scratches and life of carpet or other flooring can be extended.
Simply placing mat is not the permanent solution of restricting soil. In exterior Outdoor walkways should be composed of stone, brick or concrete; surfaces should be textured, so soils are scraped off shoes before people enter the building. Use of Technology:
Technology helps a lot in removing soil and protecting from soil. Some of the technological equipments are given below:
Room-sized air cleaner is equipment that is placed in bedrooms mostly or even it can be placed in any room where soil entry is probable. This equipment absorbs soil and removes most of the particles that can be dangerous for health.
This equipment offers high efficiency in removing small particles. This equipment can be installed near home furnace and in the return air duct. This equipment has a dust collection plate that is removable. This plate has to be cleaned on regular basis to have its effective use.
This vacuum cleaner is basically for dust control. There are filters in this equipment which eject fine particulates from air like normal cleaner but its HEPA filter makes it more effective the this job of removing fine particulates from the air.
Passive Soil De-pressurization System
This system helps to protect hotel premises from gaseous pollutants especially those pollutants which comes from ground. The mechanism of this system is such that is to be used with a fan which extract air from the sub-slab region and do it under pressure so that it prevents harm to the building. The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 was passed in the British parliament in 1974. This act defines the health and safety issues that must be considered at work and it also helps to identify the various responsibilities of various people i.e. employees and employers at the work place. The act clearly mentions the responsibilities of the employers and employees. It also tells about the penalty measures in cases where any deviation happens. The act holds the employers responsible for the health and safety at work and also responsible for the people who are affected by the work that is done. This act also says that the employees must take care of them while on work. The employees must follow all the guidelines given to them while working and take care that they are not hurt while working.
According to the act, the employers must safeguard the health, safety and the welfare of the employees and other people who work for them. This act covers all the machines, equipments and other articles which are used by the people at work. The act says that the workers must follow all the working policies and should not damage or misuse any object provided to protect them.
This act can be applied to any industry for employee safety. This act defines two important concepts of safety. It explains about hazard and risk. According to this act, hazard is something that has the potential to cause harm. Similarly risk is something by which we can identify the potential of any hazard.
The general duties in health and safety act are covered under various sections given as below:
Section 1 - This act is mainly concerned with the health and safety of the people at work. It also applies to the wellbeing of the people who are directly or indirectly impacted by the work and also controls the use of explosive substances, chemicals or other dangerous substances at work.
Section 2 - this section states the purpose of act to maintain the health and wellbeing of employees and other people.
Section 3 - this section lists the duties of the employers towards their employees
Section 4 - this section tells about the duties of the self-employers and also asks them publish information to the public about any potential hazard.
Section 5 - this section tells about the duty of the people who are in control of the premises so that they do not risk the life of the people working with them.
Section 6 - this section mentions the duties of the suppliers, manufacturers and the designers of the equipments used at work. These people should ensure that their products do not in any way endanger the safety of the people who are using them.
Section 7 - this section tells about the duties of the employers to take care of their own and their co-workers safety and to cooperate with the employer in managing a safe environment.
Section 8 - this section places a duty on everyone not to interfere in any way so as to endanger the safety and wellbeing of the people and create a risk.
