Rapport is the way to achieve someone belief to build a positive relationship. It means the way of building network that you join with people whenever you coordinate/meet with them. The connection among the two people when from, they share each other values and respect as well as culture also (Fritscher, 2019). Mutual attentiveness- when both build the rapport, then they shows interest in each other what they are saying or doing (Tickle-Degnen).Positivity- both become friendly and shares their emotion as well as issue in life as they have trust in each other (Tickle-Degnen).
Working skills require by the worker to build a good rapport with family-
What is it?
Advance empathy is the form of empathy; the advance empathy is one step ahead of basic empathy, emotional as well as somatic empathy (Chowdhry, Intermedcounselling, 2015).
The difference between empathy and advance empathy is- empathy is the mutual understanding of the feeling as well as emotion of the client suffering from mental health and addiction issue where as advance empathy when the mental health practitioner has the ability to guess the clients feeling more accurately and able to know what are the issues behind the client action and to obtain that correctly one can make it out by watching the client facial expression as well as the body language (Chowdhry, Intermedcounselling, 2015).
Explanation of advance empathy- –
According to the ‘James Pesch’ individuals more likely to build a good relationship with that individual who is more likely to them for example in choice, likes etc., excluding appearance this way of building rapport is known as Mirror matching (Pesch, 2018). This method is most likely used by the mental health professionals to build a good rapport with the clients. James also states in his explanation that while using this technique individual has to be more concern about the client’s body language, what the expressions are shown by the client during communication as well as professionals needs to focus on tone and volume of individual. If the mental health workers succeed while applying this technique then he can build a good rapport (Pesch, 2018).

Empathy means that the understanding of the individual problems by getting in their own thoughts. A famous phrase helps to explain deeper “putting your feet in someone else shoes” meaning trying to feel the pain they are feeling (McKinney, 2015). While advance empathy means identifying the problems by other client’s thought even those thought is not known to the client. Advance empathy helps to build a good rapport with the family also because the mental health professional will highlight the issues of the client having which is unknown to them and even to the client (McKinney, 2015).
Form the understanding of the advance empathy including mirror matching while I will be in my assessment period I will use technique of mirror matching and advance empathy which will helps me to gain the clients as well as clients family trust. Applying the technique of advance empathy during the session will plays an vital role to gain the family trust which allows the family to talk more about their emotions, feeling and what they are facing.
One of my client on which I have applied this method is Mr. D during the family meeting. In the meeting client’s wife as well as his daughter was involved. I apply the mirror technique to mirror their feeling as well as gestures so they will think that I am trying to help them. The main reason to apply is to gain their trust so they will feel confident while sharing their feelings and emotions. During the meeting the time come when the Mr. D was aggressive and speaking too loud on the same time he was full of tears. I give time to them so the client takes out all his anger, issues and show his emotion. As Mr. D stops there was complete silence in the room no one was willing to speak therefore I gave them time. I did not disturb them. Advance empathy is applied during the meeting which helps me a lot to identify unsaid feeling of Mr. D. After the meeting the family knows the main issue behind this condition of Mr. D.
Introduction to communication– it is hard to define the communication it only can understand by considering different perspective. According to Dominic Infante, Andrew Rancer, and Deanna Womack highlight that the communication takes place among living life such as among human and animals this takes place when the individual tries to explain anything to other (Zupanc, 2011). It includes sharing knowledge, emotions and information. There are two type of communication verbal and non verbal communication. Verbal includes text, voice but non verbal includes sign language (Evans, 2004)
Effective Communication in counseling-
In the counseling session effective communication play a vital part. To make it successful it is very important that the standard of communication is maintained during counseling. Aspects to achieve effective communication is to have a good listening skills, always be clear about the concept, have confident what you speak etc (Essential Skills For Effective Communication, 2016). Adler and Towne they have concluded that majority of the individuals spent time only listening rather than to take part in the communication. It is very important to take part in communication while doing counseling because if the counselor do not take part the family (who is receiving counseling) might think that he is not a experience or he is not interested therefore in the starting the counselor will not able to build rapport. So to have a good rapport one should show interest and respect them also (Adler, 2002)
Furthermore, to build a good rapport with the family the mental health practitioner must have an positive attitude and have a good ability to understand sign language as sometime the individual may not able to found the word to express their emotion therefore one must have a good non verbal skills. While communicating with the family the practitioner should use clear and easy words so the person will able to understand and have the confident what he said because if he loses the confident it can ruin the rapport. The mental health practitioner must maintain the eye contact while communicating and also respect them.
So, if the mental health practitioner has an effective communication then he can build good rapport as he can win their trust by showing interest listening them and help them identifying the issue. He can able to build good rapport with the family and if he success then the family will share their feeling and problems without any hesitation as the family will think that the practitioner is trying to help them (Zupanc, 2011)
Recovery plan is to develop the strategy for the treatment of mental health disorder. A recovery plan is to plan about the steps to follow for improving their mental health and wellness (Mental Health, 2019)
Mental health recovery plan is the path to take control over the mental health which will lead to achieve the treatment and recovery target. When the individual is going to make a recovery plan the individual need to focus about own experiences and let the treatment team know so they can help to build the goal plan and while working together can identify the more suitable recovery plan. it also determine the client choice and the requirement of need such as if the client to recover for mental health or wants support to achieve some target such as find job or weight loss etc (Mental Health Recovery , 2016).
Definition of recovery explained by mental health commission in march 2001
It is the blueprint as the ability to live happy even the mental illness is present or not before making any recovery plan, for whom the recovery need to tell ‘according to them what is living well’ (Leamy, 2011).
Recognized triggers factors-
It is very important to know about the trigger factor of the client before making any plan because it can ruin whole treatment if any trigger factor ignored or left behind because the client can went back to the first stage of treatment from where the client has started because trigger can enables the past which can result client will show challenging behavior therefore have to start from the first step (Mental Health Recovery , 2016).
Records of warning sign
When the individual face the trigger factor from their behavior we can determine the warning sign of the individual. If the person already knows his/her warning sign one can minimize the trigger factor. (Mental Health Recovery , 2016).
It is beneficial for both the client as well as the mental health practitioner because in this case if by chance with any error client get trigger as he remember past by taking substance on that time the team can ask help from the crisis team which will help in regulating the recovery plan and identify the measures to balance the recovery plan.
Recovery plan is the pathway to improve therefore it plays an important as well as essential part in the treatment of the client. The main key point in the recovery plan is that it is the whole set of strategy for the client in order to improve their health. As said previously that the recovery plan is the guide book to get recovered it means that the recovery plan comes with the goals (selected by the client while discussing with health professional) this plans has all the possible ways to improve health condition. It is very difficult to improve the health condition without a guide (recovery plan) plan especially when the client is facing mental health and addiction issue it’s nearly impossible to get recovered with a plan therefore it plays an essential part in improving. In order to build the recovery plan it is important that the client is present and discuses the plan/goal with the mental health worker. It is upon the client if they want to include their family or friend to be with them. While building out the recovery plan for the client, client is asked by the professional about the goals he wants to achieve. Figuring out the client need the professionals make the most suitable recovery plan for the client’s. The recovery plan has further two types long term which take long time to achieve where as another is short term recovery plan which achieved with in short period of time. Example for the short term goal is to get the employment and start earning long term goal will be save money to buy house with in 3 years (Recovery Is Possible, 2019). Support workers help the client to carried out the goal they makes the notes based on daily activity to check the progress of the goal where need improvements or need changes. Moreover in the case of client who is suffering from mental health issues recovery plan also consists their risk factor such as triggers factor which can trigger their challenging behavior. This also contains the information what to do when the anything triggers the client’s behavior. Furthermore these strategy helps the client to feel safe when they go out with their support worker because they know if anything happens there is the already plan made by the professional to resolve the issues. In order to not make the client completely dependent on the support workers, they are motivated by the support worker to avoid the trigger factors which will make them independent and can live their life independently (Mental health work at the Ministry, 2019).
Purpose- the main role of the support worker is to make sure that the recovery plan go well on the other hand it is the duty of the support worker is to make sure that the client is taking part in the community work so the client won’t feel isolated or sad. The activity can be organized by the support worker or its upon the client what activity they preferred to do which makes them feel good (Recovery Is Possible, 2019).
Community- making a good rapport with in the community also helps a lot in recovery process. The client are motivated by the support worker to involve in the community and build a good rapport as in future if he needs any kind of help the people in the neighbor can help him out (Recovery Is Possible, 2019)
Culture – the word culture is derivative from the French term and further derived from the Latin which was “Colere”. Culture describes the individual religion, what type of food they eat and what they wear and they way of living form this we can guess the health of the individual and even we can make a guess that which will have the more chances to get mental illness and addiction (Zimmermann, 2017)
Culture and ethnicity together defined as the source which describes the individual traditional, values, beliefs as well as attitudes. It also works as very important part in vulnerability in mental health and addiction.
Maori people belong to Aotearoa (New Zealand). Their the local language is te reo. There are some aspect come under Maori culture, these are karakia, kawa, tohunga, and tikanga which plays an essential role in maintaining the healthy well being. As in their culture before starting any event they used to do karakia and after finishing event the again do as their strong spiritual belief that if they do karakia the outcome will be positive. Majority of them do karakia in the beginning of the day as well as in the end of the day.
According to the Maori, individuals and whanau use karakia to communicate with god and ancestors, that will develop the strong will power which helps them to be among healthy individuals and make them to stay away from the mental illness disorder. Therefore in the mental health facility a mental health practitioner uses karakia when the client having mental illness shows disoriented (example – isolation, agitated or alone) behavior they uses karakia to make them feel relax and calm. Therefore, karakia is a holistic approach which plays an important part in making the client life healthier. Moreover Maori people feel whakama while sharing their emotion or talking about their mental illness especially in front of the individual who belongs to other culture therefore if the mental health practitioner has the culture competency that will going to help him a lot in the making the client more comfortable to share their feeling by showing respect and value the culture which will help them to maintain the client wellbeing and communication as sharing their emotion will them to identify the real problem and find the solution.

Rangoa is the traditional medicine in the Maori culture as they have the strong believe which also help them maintain good health (Tepou, 2019). Te Reo is their mother tongue which also plays an essential role in maintaining the good wellbeing as well as communication because using their own language make them feel good as well as connected to their ancestors moreover they will comfortable while explain their problem which will helps the practitioner understands the client more and can give the better treatment even they will not feel whakama as they are using their mother tongue because still there are so many individual who are not fluent in speaking other language. Therefore it will lead in building up the healthy lifestyle which means culture also plays an essential role in vulnerability as well in communication and wellbeing.
If the culture of Maori is not valued and respected, this can affect their mental health adversely and negatively. Promotion of these values helps in inculcating values and promoting mental health through prayers and communiation.
Whanau ora is one of the health model which is based on the Maori culture. In which the essential part is played by the family to maintain the well being and communication. This models aims is to provide assistance t the whanau as well as provide support to the client suffering from the mental health and addiction issues (AGI Education, 2019).
This model states that family health comes from the whanau ora. As per as the Maori culture it is strongly believed that if the anyone get ill in the whanau then we can analyze that the whole family will be going through mental stress and Whanau ora works to provide support to family to improve their health condition, therefore it is proved that the culture and ethnicity can guide the individuals in maintaining the health better. As per as the Maori culture the whanau play an essential part in their life in case anyone get mental illness the whole whanau come to support that client which makes the client not to show depression symptoms as whole family is there for the client to support him (AGI Education, 2019).
According to the Maori people the concept of whakapapa helps the client to maintain the well being because in any case the key workers belongs to the same culture then the treatment for the client will be easy as the client will not feel whakama in sharing their problem which can result in a better planning for the well being, also rise up the level of communication. as per as this model Maori culture permits theirs whanau to choose for them as per as kawa which can help them to maintain well being.
Introduction- Health literacy is explained as a way to better understand health knowledge. Health literacy consists of the ability to attain goals to achieve positive changes in mental health and addiction (Ministry of Health , 2015).
Its relation is to obtain, handle and recognize basic health knowledge. All New Zealanders can be added to mental health and daily activities because the health literature framework provides accessible, high-quality services that reduce individual needs and provide clear information about mental health and addiction. All can work together to manage issues. This framework is planned by the New Zealand Ministry of Health to provide support for the well-being of all individuals by addressing mental health and addiction issues. The goal is to trim down health literacy requirements and identify good literacy habits by reducing the most cost (Ministry of Health, 2015).
It provides support to people and helps them to be aware about mental health and addictive diseases, and soon they are doing well. This framework aids individuals to receive considered advice to the health department to support health and literacy activities efficiently by incorporating healthy literacy ideas into counseling and system based on evidence and validation. This framework chooses a communication approach that is based on a manual and focuses on achieving the needs of whanau and individuals. This framework also developed health knowledge through the promotion and promotion of health-based health awareness and literacy. It also helps people to be aware about the diseases and how an individual can prevent them and reduce the chances of catching it. (Ministry of Health, 2015).
Moreover the aim of the health literacy is to make people aware of any new drugs as well as any new disease which has been introduced in the community. It is done because updating about the new disease will help the people to avoid those things from which they can be infected. Furthermore, it has been seen that, the state (or area or where there is low literacy rate) where there is no such type of updating/education about heath have low health rate. Therefore it essential to have the knowledge about the health literacy because it covers the entire major aspect to fight with disease such as educating about health literacy means making people aware of the disease and its treatment and the services which are available for them and how to use them. Health literacy also make the people to access those services easily (Mental Health, 2019).
Therefore, health literacy plays an essential role in the community to make the resident healthy and helps them to live better life. It is also important to have the knowledge about the health literacy especially for the individuals who are working in the health organisation because they can guide the individual about the services and how they can access them (Mental health work at the Ministry, 2019).
The knowledge-based health literacy framework has focused on increasing understanding about how to decrease require for equity and health. This type of literacy framework improves health and literacy requirements and develops evidence to understand what is needed to support effective change. It also deepens understanding of the effect of New Zealand’s health knowledge and enhances the work of korero Marama. The health literacy framework also builds health literacy, reduces demand for health systems, and develops guides to exchange ideas on new changes. The knowledge-based health literacy framework has established a link between research and education to develop new ideas based on health and literacy. It also collects health literacy data and uses health literacy equipment such as Rauemi Atawhai, a guide to building health source in New Zealand to review current resources (Ministry of Health, 2015). Implementing a health awareness and literacy program
The health literacy framework base on health system change is also dedicated to developing better health literacy practices and investing in new modification to achieve better results. This framework proposes new policies and procedures to facilitate access to health and literacy systems on behalf of health development. This framework is also new for people to reach goals, live better, communicate better, and make decisions for clients with health problems such as disability or mental illness. I redesigned the change. Health problems. This framework help to be familiar with the importance of health literacy in maintain medical service standards and designing programs (Ministry of Health, 2015).
Client name – Mrs.X. he is an Maori women. Suffering from schizophrenia on the same time has auditory hallucination, trouble in walking. Can become agitated easily and feel anxiety
Prof Mason Durrie is the one who developed this Maori model. This model is focused upon wellness or wellness or holistic health model. In this there are four aspects. This mode is explained by considering the foure pillars of house as the first pillar represent taha hinengaro which means psychological health, second pillar represent taha whanau refers to social well being third pillars refers to taha wairua according to this it means spiritual wellbeing (AGI Education, 2019).
- Taha wairua- one of the important aspect of health as per as this a good health is always never seen as well as never told energies. The spiritual vibes lies in the individual’s life force. It determines that, who we are and where we will reach. According to the tradition physical illness aims on spirit, which make sure factor for damage (Ministry of Health, 2017).
- Taha tinana- as per as Maori observation, it is the ability for the physical improvement and growth. It also knows as physical health it is also a way of taking care of the body. For the Maori people the main characteristic for the better health that cannot be neglected is the physical health (Ministry of Health, 2017).
- Taha whanau – it is also a considerable fact which is interlinked with the relations. For the Maori people Whanau is their identity it is very important to them if they get separated from their family there is the high chance for them to get mentally ill. Therefore taha whanau is directly dependent upon whanau as there is the involvement of the family can help in treatment of illness and they also feel safer and protected while they are with family (Ministry of Health, 2017).
- Taha hinengaro- one of the important aspect of the te whare tapa wha model. It refers to the thinking ability of the person as well as feeling also. For them a healthy relationship can lead by healthy thinking which indirectly plays an important role in health improvement. Maori individuals feel whakama when they have to speak about their feeling, therefore they do not express which makes them depressed and mentally ill (Ministry of Health, 2017).
Taha tinana is one of the aspect of te whare tapa wha which i can apply on my client who is a maori culture which is in respect to physical health because she is suffering from physical disorder she has trouble in walking therefore I implement this model on her as i try to motivate her to building up the strategy to improve physical health the disability she is suffering from is walking difficulty. I try to motivate her to attend therapy as my client is not having a good physical health the therapist will assist her to how to improve he physical health. I encourage her to participate in attending therapy there therefore I also focused on applying the treaty of waiting n respect to my client.
Taha Wairau is also another part of te whare tapa whare. She easily gets agitated so to make her relax. I use karakia, praying to ancestors because of her strong religious belief she came back to normal stage. It is good to apply on my client because they believe that there is some unseen energy which heals them. Another aspect is taha wahanu from te whare tapa wha so I implement this model on my client because she a Maori women and according to the Maori culture if anyone in the family suffering from any illness then the whole family can easily show some of its effect so to minimise that I apply this model on my client including her family to motivate them in improve the family wellbeing. One more aspect from te ware tapa wha which I have applied on my client that is taha hingero as my client is suffering from schizophrenia and she is also having auditory hallucination to understand her emotions. Taha hinengaro refers to mental health as she is having schizophrenia therefore I have applied this to provide support and motivate to have a healthy life and she can also reduces symptoms such as depression she felt and also reduction in level of stress. To minimise these symptoms i uses some therapy out which one is deep breathing.
So therefore, this model pays an vital part for maintaining good health.
The Treaty Waitangi is an agreement among the British Crown and 500 Maori chiefs in 1840. It was created to form a partnership among the British Crown and the Maori. Its main aim was to build a symbol of union, to provide safety to their land. Its main goal are protection, partnership and participation in Maori (Te Ara, 2019).
According to the Treaty of Waitangi, there must be community participation in Haap, Yiwi, Wanau and Maori to build new strategies for health services. Under the Treaty of Waitangi, the Crown Prince’s people must cooperate with the Maori individual in positive trust and speak to the Maori people when they get new techniques and strategies for their benefits (Ministry of Health, 2014). As per as treaty, it states that each co-worker must work for both conciliations in good faith, which is a commitment to partnership (Waitangi Tribunal, 2016).
The treaty of the Waitangi is to ensure the participation of the population in health and disabled areas and to participate effectively in decision-making, new strategies and the provision of health and disability (Ministry of Health, 2014). Seeking Participation of Maori and non-Maori workers or workers is reflected in policy reviews and practices. Mentally-maintained mental health centres should be involved or must be engaged, such as between Maori-based mental health issues and the development of plans for people with addiction.
It is also essential in the Treaty of Waitangi to make sure that Maori has access to the similar height of medical services as non-Maori and to traditional Maori customs (Ministry of Health, 2014) .The practice of traditional medicine is protected from the Treaty of Waitangi Maori. Protection needs consultation with Maori, including decision-making (Waitangi Tribunal, 2016).
The Waitangi applies in relation to my clients. as partnerships ,the treaty of the Waitangi that can be functional in context to my client. My client is schizophrenia and he cannot make decisions alone. Therefore, from this theory of the client’s family can include, Waitangi can be engaged as a partner during the decision, and non-Maori mental health support workers, sincerity to plan new strategies, can work with him. The principles of the Waitangi Participation Convention apply in decision making. It is a priority to sign consent forms from Whanau and changes in everyday activities. Social activities around the principles of the Waitangi Treaty are supported by the expression of my client culture and her participation by respecting her values and beliefs.
Thus, the participation can be implementing to my clients Because they assist her to participate in social activities. Since participation can be incorporated, participation in games like Bingo has been applied and encouraged to meet other people.
The type of protection, that the theory of the Treaty of Waitangi and the Treaty of Waitangi, assists in planning treatment based on Maori culture, beliefs and values, followed by the mental health official. Ms. x encourages the use of kawa (Maori medicine), and this principle also protects treatments that reveal their culture. A client working in the field of mental health care helps them willingly. Similarly, care plans are focused on their culture, which helps healing, including encouraging mental health workers to practice Kawa (Maori medicine) for the welfare of clients. Thus, the Treaty of Waitangi applies to my clients.
