How to Avoid Plagiarism
Based on the definition of Plagiarism on 1997 that given by New Webster's Encyclopedic Dictionary of the English Language, Plagiarism is "the unauthorized use of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own"
To avoid Plagiarism in our work and in our daily routine, we should do a document sources properly using Footnotes, Endnotes, or Parenthetical References, and must write a Bibliography, References, or Works Cited page and place it at the end of the research paper to list the sources used.
Parenthetical References is the simplest thing to use and sometimes sometimes referred to as Parenthetical Documentation or Parenthetical Citations.
If you use Parenthetical References in your work you only need to put a short reference enclosed in parentheses immediately after the citation, then list the sources cited in your Bibliography, Works Cited or References page at the end of your paper
But if you used Footnote references, you must have numerically superscripted Footnote references at the foot of the same page where your citations are located, plus you must add a Bibliography, Works Cited, or References page at the end of your paper unless instructed otherwise by your teacher or instructor.
But its different if you use Endnote references, your citation within the text of your paper is the same as your Footnote citation, but you must list your Endnote references at the end of your paper in superscripted numerical order on a separate page entitledEndnotes. You must still add a Bibliography, Works Cited or References page after yourEndnotespage unless instructed otherwise by your teacher or instructor.
This is referring to a small number of assigned texts or you are including a bibliography with the more specific information about the texts you cite. In-text citations usually list either the name of the publication or the author of the work. Here is an example:
"Knowledge divorced from life equals sickness" (More Die of Heartbreak, p. 7).
Here is another acceptable way to format in-text citations:
The term "hunter-gatherer," when used to describe nomadic societies that practice neither agriculture nor animal husbandry, places undue emphasis on hunting both as a source of nutrition (Oakes, 1980, 121) and as a time commitment (Peachtree, 12).
Make sure you include enough of information about each of the sources you are citing so that it can be identified in your bibliography.
A Note on Notes
If you are not careful in your note-taking process, it's very easy to closely paraphrase or even copy a source unintentionally. When in doubt, copy out the exact words of the original quote in your notes, put it in quotation marks, and include the citation information. Then you can later decide whether to quote or paraphrase, according to your reason for citing the text.
Manage your time
If you have to meet a deadline, start work early. So you have plenty of time to research and write. Lack of time is one reason many people - especially stressed-out students - intentionally or unintentionally plagiarize.
Other ways to avoid plagiarism are to documenting all the sources as early we start to do the research. When we do the draft idea, differentiate which are your own idea and those from other sources. Underline, bold and italicise if it other person words. For example, if the original source read:
“The dissatisfying nature of industrial or clerical work is no longer
disputed. Many of to-day's employees prefer a greater level of
involvement in their jobs than was previously assumed. Many desire
more self-control and a chance to make a greater contribution to the
organisation” (Schuler, Dowling and Smart, 1988, p 17.) “
Permission MUST be obtained when using outside sources.
You must first ask permission to use the information from the source if you want to include it in your article/writing. You must wait until you have received confirmation of this permission.
Also note, if you use substantial verbatim excerpts of words (quotes) or reproductions of graphs, tables, etc. that appear in other works, then not only must proper credit be given, but permission from the originator and/or rights holder must also be obtained.
The source index.
At the end of your article, you must include a ‘source index'. Source index is a list of all the sources informing the reader of where you obtained all your facts, quotations, etc.
Avoid sharing paper or electronic draft with other student if it have your work in it. Keep it secure and you cannot accused of academic misconduct.
