Fujitsu Limited is Japanese multinational computer hardware and IT services company headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. Fujitsu Limited was established on June 20, 1935. It has subsidiaries and affiliates companies in 70 countries with over 165,000 employees worldwide. Fujitsu is the largest in Japan as well as the world’s third largest IT services provider.

Fujitsu (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. was established in 1997. It has 200 employees at the sales office in 3505, Jalan Teknokrat 5, Cyberjaya, Kuala Lumpur.

Fujitsu’s products are servers, storage, personal computers and peripherals; software such as middleware, packaged software, applications and developer tool; telecommunication; microelectronic and others. Fujitsu (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd also provides services such as application services, business services and dynamic infrastructures. The following are the six main strategic elements on which Fujitsu builds its business partnerships with customers, suppliers and associates.

Human resource management (HRM) plays a vital role in organization achievement in terms of its survival, effectiveness and competitiveness. According to Noe and etc (2010) defined HRM as the policies, practices and systems that influence employees’ behavior, attitudes and performances. However since decades ago HRM faced many challenges such as sustainability challenge, global challenge and technology challenge. Therefore, this assignment is trying to identify the challenge that faced by Fujitsu in managing its human resource.

Basically, we had identified several challenges that Fujitsu faced which can affect Fujitsu performance and competitiveness. Based on our study, we also had identified several recommendations for the organization to focus on. All the recommendations is believed can increase Fujitsu’s human resource performance which will directly contribute to enhance the value of shareholders.

Since decades ago, human resource management has become an engine for an organization to achieve its goals and missions. Due to every department in organization using people as mediator to complete the task given, human capital must be managed properly in line with task requirement. However to manage people is not as easy as we think because every person has different attitude and behavior. Therefore, human resource management faces several challenges that are sustainability challenges, global challenges and technology challenges. In this part, we will identify those challenges related to Fujitsu Company.

3.1 Sustainability challenges

Sustainability refers to the ability of the company to survive in a dynamic competitive environment. This ability always deals with economics and social challenges;

Economic challenges.

Fujitsu and many MNC normally sources out the application for development projects to the subsidiaries or sub-contractors in Philippine, Indonesia, Vietnam or India where professional salaries are cheap. It impacts the employment in Malaysia including Fujitsu itself. As a result, Fujitsu must cut down their operation by retrenchment or rearranging its human capital. If the company decides to retrench its employers, it must think about the compensation should be given to the employees involve. Otherwise, Fujitsu must provide extra training to their employees so that they can be transferred to other department. Human resource Manager must manage this problem excellently because this problem will incur costs to the company.

Economics challenges are always associated with uncertainty. Fujitsu and other organization are unable to control the economy fluctuation which can affect the organization performance. It can be shown during economic crisis in 2007/2008 when global demand on electronic products decreased drastically. In this situation, human resource manager need to rearrange their budget and planning so that can reduce company expenditure.

Other issue related to HRM issue is to meet customer satisfaction. In order to meet more than customer need and expectation, organizations have instituted total-quality management (TQM) and reengineering programs. Each of these programs requires that HR be involved in changing work processes, training, job design, compensation, and the like. HR issues also arise when communicating with employees about the new work systems, just as with any change initiative.

But to benefit from diversity, managers need to recognize the potential concerns of employees and make certain that the exchange between the organization and employees is mutually beneficial.

Social challenge also can be seen in terms of geographical condition of the organization . Firstly, the challenge arises because of location of Fujitsu itself. The office in Cyberjaya is far from the city of Kuala Lumpur. Transportation becomes a major problem when there is lack of public transport facilities for the staffs to commute to work. Besides, customers sometimes find difficulties to reach the place. The company might lose business opportunities when customers want to reduce their time of travelling. Another thing that should be considered is limited food outlet and costly. The price of food is expensive and it is not affordable for lower income staffs. Staffs have to go outside to have their meals. And that would consume their break time.

Previously, Fujitsu was actually British company and then it was bought by Japanese Company. As we know that, Japanese are known as people who are very ethical and full of discipline in their work.
