The real friendship is a term that all the people use but, what that is means? To explain it I am going to discuss about the topic of the friendship developed in the books The Motorcycle Diaries of the author Ernesto Che Guevara and The Great Gatsby of the author F. Scott Fitzgerald. First of all, I have to say that I chose the characters Ernesto and Alberto from the book The Motorcycle Diaries and Jay Gatsby with Nick Carraway from the book The Great Gatsby with the purpose to realize a comparison between the friendships of these couples exposed during the plot of both books. According to my point of view, the friendship between Ernesto and Alberto is real, sincere, honest, and reliable, but the friendship of the other couple of characters is different because all the actions to help the other one were made with a personal interest and without a purpose in common.

First of all, I am going to analyze the characters one by one in order to produce a synopsis of them. I will start with the book The Great Gatsby and the character of Nick Carraway who is fundamentally a pretty honest guy when first I analyzed him, it doesn't mean that he's always a very nice one. He's skilled in the art of getting along with everyone in public and rather sassily analyzing them in private. Nick may be polite and easy to get along with on the outside, but he's not afraid to tell it like it is. Nick still seems to see himself as a good Midwestern boy with high standards for everyone he meets, including himself, and prides himself on maintaining his standards, even in the corrupt, fast-moving world of East coast high society. In the relationship with Jay Gatsby, I observed his behavior and was not a real mate for Gatsby because he listened the Gatsby´s problems, but he did not share with him the feelings that those problems produced in Gatsby´s life. Moreover I am going to analyze to Jay Gatsby who seems like he couldn't be further from the young country boy he once was. The complete Gatsby shows a spectacular kind of determination and singleness of purpose that's really quite mind-boggling whether his goal is getting out of North Dakota or reclaiming Daisy ( his lover), Gatsby accomplishes them with amazing tenacity. We get the feeling that he never forgets anything, and that his vision of the past is perhaps even more clear than his vision of the present, for that reason Gatsby carrying out the friendship with Nick Carraway with a previous intention in order to obtain a good result for his porpoise. On others words Nick was useful for Gatsby in terms of the organization of a meeting with Daisy.

Second, I am going to describe the characters of the book The Motorcycle Diaries

Second, we have to define what is friendship, and as a definition is a personal relationship shared between each friend for the welfare of other. In other words, it is the relationship of trust, faith and concern for each other feelings. And as I believe it is a relationship of mutual caring and intimacy among one another. A friend is one who knows you as a person and regards you for what you are and not what he or she is looking in a good friend. Best friend is one who accepts the good as well bad qualities of his friend and also takes an initiative in correcting and mending them. Friendship is a distinctive kind of concern for your friend, it is a relationship of immense faith and love for each other. According to it the relationship between Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway is not friendship to prove it there are examples in the book

" At nine o' clock, one morning late in July, Gatsby's gorgeous car lurched up the rocky drive to my door and gave out a burst of melody from its here-noted horn. I was the first time he had called on me, though I had gone to two of his parties, mounted in his hydroplane, and, at his urgent invitation, made frequent use of his beach.

Good morning, old sport. You' re having lunch with me today and I thought we'd ride up together."

The last words illustrate the observation of Nick Carraway about Jay Gatsby, and his attention to the economic resources that he had and not the complete vision of Gatsby, and the superficial words used in the invitation of Gatsby without a true commitment between them. Another characteristic of this false friendship is the concern about the opinion of other people because in a real friendship It does not matter.

" Look here, old sport, he broke out surprisingly, what's your opinion of me, anyhow?

A little overwhelmed, I began the generalized evasions which that question deserves.

Well, I'm going to tell you something about my life, he interrupted. I don't want you to get a wrong idea of me from all these stories you hear."

Fitzgerald, 1925

After that other issue about this friendship is the distrust in terms of request, for example Gatsby could not ask to Nick about the demand that he had, Gatsby preferred to realize the request trough other person.

"No, this afternoon. I happened to find out that you're taking Miss Baker to tea.

Do you mean you're in love with Miss Baker?

No, old sport, I'm not. But Miss Baker has kindly consented to speak to you about this matter."

Fitzgerald, 1925

On other hand, I analized the friendship between Ernesto Guevara and Alberto Granado. They showed a real friendship from the beginning of the book with the following words:

"This is not a story of incredible heroism, or merely the narrative of a cynic; at least I do not mean it to be. It is a glimpse of two lives that ran parallel for a time, with similar hopes and convergent dreams."

Guevara, 2003

This couple of friends decided realize a travel with common porpoises and with a complete confidence each other, without selfishness and materialism because the main reason for hat travel had an altruist base; they shared a dream as it is wirtte in the following words:

"Along the roads of our daydream we reached remote countries, navigated tropical seas and traveled all through Asia. And suddenly, slipping in as if part of our fantasy, the question arose:

Why don't we go to North America?

North America? But how?

On La Poderosa, man."

Guevara, 2003

Other characteristic of this real friendship between Ernesto and Alberto is that they share a common vision of the future they developed a dream they were speak about the future of both as only one, they made a plan as it is exposed in this words when they were walking trough San Martin de los Andes:

"We bought some beef and set off the immense trees, where the wilderness had arrested the advance of civilization, we made plans to build a laboratory in this place, when we finished our trip."

Guevara, 2003

Finally, in comparison the friendship of Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway is not a strong one because this friendship was the product of a previous decision of Gatsby in order to obtain a main porpoise that is produce a meeting with his lover Daisy. As this words illustrate from the beggning Gatsby was thinking in himself and the opportunity to conquer Daisy.

"Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay.

Then it had not been merely the stars to which he had aspired on that June night. He came alive to me, delivered suddenly from the womb of his purposeless splendor.

He wants to know, continued Jordan, if you'll invite Daisy to your house some afternoon and then let him come over."

Fitzgerald, 1925

Besides, in the friendship of Ernesto and Alberto there a clear camaradeship as Ernesto write in his words they had a destiny, but only one for both, they could not image a life with different paths.

"I now know, by an almost fatalistic conformity with the facts, that my destiny is to travel, or perhaps it's better to say that travelling is our destiny, because Alberto is the same as me."

Guevara, 2003

After all these examples, I could mention that the real friendship is a personal option and depends on our decision find it, in other words the relationship of the characters of the book The Motorcycle Diaries is an expel of real friendship, but the characters from the book The Great Gatsby are not because according to my thought they had a relationship of convenience.

At the end of this discussion I could provide information about two examples took from books where the friendship is one of the principal topics trough the story and it has a big influence in the plot, as I could exposed in the development of this essay is not easy to recognize the true friendship, but with those examples I could generate a clear example of the two kinds of friendship the real one and the false one. On other hand there are a difference in terms of context but, this has not and influence on the development of the friendship, in other words it does not matter the time or the context the true friendship is going to stay alive for a long time and is not going to die at the fulfilling of a personal interest, idea, or dream because, the real friendship is going to remind in the time.
