Analysis Of Staircase To Destiny

My exhibit is endeavouring to reflect and foreground the attitudes, beliefs and values that I represent as an individual in this present time in my life. As my life progresses on, my attitudes, beliefs and values have been uniformly modified and evolved by interacting with my family and my religion, Buddhism. This is the idea that I have approached in constructing my exhibit.

I believe that utilising the white base of my exhibit would be the most appropriate way to express and portray these influences in an understandable manner. The simplicity of this exhibit may seem somewhat unappealing, however it was constructed this way intentionally; this is the only way to express my discourses in an understandable manner. Glancing at each and every feature which is utilised can allow readers to relate each paragraph to it for a better understanding of the many discourses responsible for shaping and modifying me. Everything is presented in black and white so that its features achieve the purpose of representing me and my discourses as evidently as possible without confusion or uncertainty. Furthermore, this exhibit will provide a vast amount of concealed symbolism in a compact space as there is a saying 'Great things come in small packages'. My exhibit will provide a thorough insight into the influences in my life that have shaped my discourses.

My Exhibit:

The word 'family' in my exhibit symbolises that I value my family as they have been shaping me the way I am today. My family has a strong bond and believes in success in academia which has permeated into my beliefs. I believe that having a family is important as they will always be at your side supporting and caring for you. Learning how my family interacts with each other in different situations, allows me to experience and learn the different types of methods in solving the many problems or obstacles which I could encounter in my life when accomplishing my goal. Thus this was how my family has influenced and shaped my attitude and beliefs. The discourses that have been shaped and influenced by my family will always stay with me. I value my family beyond anything else in the world and will continue to sustain this belief.

My religion is the key aspect in my life as it is something irreplaceable and priceless. This is represented by the picture of Buddha on my exhibit. I appreciated that I was born into a Buddhist family as it has developed my discourses. Buddhism has transformed me to become a better person as it teaches me discipline and self-control; these are the many key components in my spiritual survival. My religion has allowed me to understand helping others is in fact helping yourself. My exhibit represents this by a quote, 'What comes around goes around'. My Chinese heritage and religion was imperative in creating the blend of parallel beliefs, values and attitudes I uphold and live by till this present day. Buddhism has motivated me into becoming a doctor, as helping others is in fact helping yourself. During the holiday, I came about a book that had a package of quotes about life and blessing. A Buddhist blessing has given me some thoughts which are:

May you be safe and protected

May you be happy and peaceful

May you be healthy and strong

May you carry your life with ease and grace

The volume of the white box symbolises the many good deeds that I have done which encapsulates the black box. The black box is far too personal for people to browse through it as it is sealed from the outside world.

After much introspection, I realised what my goal is; this has underpinned the construction of my thoughts. The staircase represents how I perceive my life at this particular point in time and how I pursue my dream goal. Coming from a Chinese culture, it has shaped me to perceive that education is an essential part of my foundation. As an Asian, I used my time very wisely by eliminating the distractions of games and television in order to maximise the time in my studies. From my religion, I have learnt that life is not always smooth as there are many obstacles that you have to overcome. Reading a quote by Bruce Lee: 'I have come to understand that life is to be lived and not to be conceptualised. I am happy because I am growing daily and I am honestly not knowing where the limit lies', gives me the strength to break through the barriers or obstacles, since Bruce Lee is my idol as I worship his martial arts. This is represented by the picture of Bruce Lee and his quote in my exhibit. To become a doctor, it is essential that I obtained high marks by studying hard. Secondly, my UMAT score must be at a level that is high enough for me to become one of the members in the medical professional. My family always instructed me to 'Be like a postage stamp, stick to one thing until you get there', quoted by Margaret Carty as shown on my exhibit. My pursuit of success is similar to a staircase because each step I make takes me closer to my goal. Through the constant changes and decisions in my life, my values, beliefs and attitudes has been modified by the pursuit for happiness and success.

Everyone has their own unique background and family history, I am no exception. The gaps and silences of my life are too personal. The death of my grandfather is one of the many griefs that I have experienced in my life. This is silenced in my representation as it is best left for personal deliberation rather than being explored for public display.

As the world is aging, so am I; my discourses have not yet completely developed as there is every possibility for growth as I engage with new discourses. Every aspect that I have presented has all been essential in providing the fundamental modification to form the foundation that has housed my values, attitudes and beliefs as an individual. I am uncertain of what the future might hold, but I am convinced that my discourses which were developed with my family will remain the same. My exhibit has not yet been completed as I still have many phases of my life to experience in the near future which is represented by the emptiness around my staircase.
