An audience is a group of readers who reads a particular piece of writing. As a writer, you should anticipate the needs or expectations of your audience in order to convey information or argue for a particular claim. Your audience might be your instructor, classmates, the president of an organization, the staff of a management company, or any other number of possibilities. In writing the audience is an important consideration.
Knowing the audience helps a writer to make decisions about what information he should include, how he should arrange that information, and what kind of supporting details will be necessary for the reader to understand what he is presenting. It also influences the tone and structure of the document. In order to develop and present an effective argument the writer need to be able to appeal to and address the audience. In addition, different audience expects different types or formats of texts. For example, readers of Environmental Impact Statement do not want to read rhyming poetry extolling the virtues of nature. Mothers getting letters from children do not want to read laboratory report about the events of the past months. Knowing the knowledge level of the audience will help a writer help him determine how to write, how much information to include, how long to make his text, how subjective or objective he should be, and how formal or informal his text should be.
Also when writing an essay one should consider the expectations of the audience. In this case consider what they expect to get out of the essay, and how to meet those expectations. Sometimes it is better for a writer to put himself in the reader's place and imagine what he will like and dislike about the essay. In essay writing, being conscious of writing to someone else will make the writing more relaxed and natural. Also a writer has to remember that each individual reader will have a different perspective which grows out of his or her culture, gender, and unique life experiences. He would not like to offend his audience in his writing (he should consider his own experience as a reader). At the same time, he should not be afraid to challenge his audience, to make them reach a bit.
In academic writing the audience is generally the instructor or other students. Although the instructor is often the only person who will read the finished product, customizing a paper to his or her level of knowledge can run the risk of leaving out important information, since many instructors know far more about the topic than the average reader would. In addition, omitting information that the instructor already knows can result in a weak or unbalanced paper, also the writer should writer in Standard English. In other word, try to use correct grammar, sentence structure and vocabulary.
When writing for children a writer must use a controlled vocabulary. This simply means carefully choosing his words or phrases in a way the child will understand. Also he must use a limited range of sentence structures. Do not use too long sentences. Keep it short and simple for the child to understand. He should also consider the interest of the age group in order to develop a character with which the reader can identify. Toddlers are concrete learners. They explore books to learn about the world around them and accept the information at face value. So the illustrations should be easily recognized and language structure should be kept simple and understandable and it should be related to their kind of books. In other hand when writing for young adults, a writer has to explore the issues and challenges of teenage life. In books it often takes a heavier matter, including dating, sex, swearing, drugs and dysfunctional families. In this context, a writer should know the kind of words and sentences structure to use which they will be able to communicate with.
It would be a false move to conclude that the reader already knows the material being put forward to them. The reason for this is because, if they already have knowledge about what has been written, why would they need to read it again? But if the writer's assumption is that the reader is lacking certain information or he or she is bent to the other side of his side then it is not going to be burdensome to nail the exact points and know where to start from. Having the intended audience in mind will help the writer target the actual points which would be written in terms of the specific reader.
Introduction builds relationship with the readers early. This means if the beginning of the essay or writing has connection with what the reader is expecting it will encourage him or her to continue reading the essay. But if the relationship is defined late, the intended audience may be have already lost interest in the writing. Making appropriate choices of styles and support gives the reader the feeling that the writer is taking him or her into consideration. The tone which would be used for the essay would be affected by the audience. For example, the writer can choose to be breezy or explicit in the choice of words.
Sometimes the title of the work indicates the audience. An example is "Many drivers are unaware that drinking while driving confuses them on the road and blurs their vision". This example only implies to the actual audience who drink while driving which persuades them to avoid that habit. Here, the audience is not hit directly with the tittle which is being conveyed.
The audience influences how the essay will be, either in a general (public) or just certain people for example, children, adult, etc. Specific terms would have to be defined depending on the experience of the audience. For instance, where children happens to be the intended audience, the term "Act" for example will have to be defined to make the essay vivid and well understood.
If a writer is going to use writing to make something happen, he has to be aware of the audience he is addressing and he has to place things in a context that the audience will understand. Without placing his argument or opinion in his audience's understanding, the message which he is typing to pass across will never be heard and understood. In other word audience is important when writing an essay or any other kind of writing because without the audience there will be no one to read and understand the information being passed.
