This essay is going to be talking about ways in which a University student should approach academic reading in order to make the process efficient and effective as possible. We would be talking about means and ways a University Student can achieve this by critical thinking, skimming and scanning and some other ways to do this will be explained in the course of this essay.
The strategy adopted by a student in reading and understanding determines how well they would perform in an exam and in the long run, these methods vary and as such, so do the student's performance. The most successful students in school are known by their efficient and effective reading pattern.
The approach towards academic reading is efficient when the individual is able to read, understand and pour out whatever they have read without any problems. The approach is then effective when the desired result from reading in such manner is attained by the student and applauded by all concerned.
Methods such as skimming, scanning, reading, jotting, research, non-verbal signals and summarization etc. are used to achieve effective and efficient reading skills thus aiding to obtain a good result.
Furthermore, it should be noted that effective reading comprises of the student being able to listen, speak, write, read and constantly practice what is being thought.
The sole purpose of reading is for the reader to be able to connect the ideas of what is on the page of the book to what they already know. An example is cited below:
67237245938 are difficult to remember after it had been read. 672-372-459-38 is going to be easier to remember because they are grouped, but 123456 would be the easiest to remember due to prior knowledge of this. Having known this, one can easily decipher how best to go about with their reading strategy knowing what would seem like a problem and how it can be resolved.
We should also have at the back of our minds that making or ensuring an efficient and effective approach towards academic reading requires both the co-operation of the students as well as a full-fledged support from the lecturer whose method of teaching might also be key in ensuring that the student has an idea of what they are reading, in addition to parents ability to meet up with their obligation in all ramifications (school fees, housing, feeding and moral support).
There are different efficient and effective methods through which a student could approach academic reading. These methods could readily assure the student success in their exams as well as recognition from their tutors because of their success in exams through the use of such steps.
Methods such as skimming and scanning, detailed reading, revision and various stages in text reading, summarization are all effective means of a tactical approach towards educational reading.
How effective would these methods be?
How efficient are the steps to be taken?
Would it ensure student success in their exams?
Can these methods be easily adopted by students?
These are questions that would run through the mind of a student as they go through the various reading methods being outlined in this report.
This essay would assure the readers that the outlined steps, if consistently followed would be most efficient and effective in ensuring a proper appreciation of educational studying. The efficient Reading Strategies are as follows:
Skimming is defined as a selective reading technique which is used to obtain important ideas when complete detailed information is not needed. It is simply obtaining only an abstract of the content.
Previewing: this involves having a slight view of the material to be read.
Reading the heading of the material, having a glimpse of the table of content (if any available), appendix and possible questions that were asked in the material (if any available) is referred to as having a preview of the book. With this done, the reader has only a little knowledge of what the book is about.
Over viewing: here, a short description of the subject or situation that would give the reader the main ideas of the book without having to go through a much detailed aspect of the subject. This involves reading the material (book) to have a complete idea of what it is about but not having a completely detailed knowledge of the material (book).
Reviewing: this involves a careful and detailed examination of the material (book) so as to ensure that the reader has fully grasped the whole idea behind the subject. This does not guarantee that the reader would have 100% understanding of the subject, but would be able to understand to a large extent what has just been read.
Scanning process: this is a reading strategy that involves one moving the eyes at a greater speed over chunk of words simultaneously. It involves the careful examination of the subject "quickly", but keeping certain details in mind. The various steps involved in scanning include:
Checking the organization of the ideas in the book/subject
Forming specific questions based on the ideas in the book
Anticipating clue word
Identifying likely answers to the questions
Using a systematic pattern
Eventually confirming your answer.
Detailed reading: This is a time consuming kind of reading that is widely practiced by lawyers; it involves taking rapt attention to what you are reading. Having a photocopy of what you want to read helps in detailed reading. With this, you would be able to underline the main points, write comments on the margin lines, as well as questions. This is like having a critical view of what you are reading.
Though detailed reading is time consuming, combined with Skimming and scanning, a greater efficiency and effectiveness can be achieved.
Revision Reading: This involves the reader, rapidly reading through materials which they are already familiar with, in order to confirm knowledge and understanding of what had been read. After the reader has familiarized themselves with the materials through skimming, scanning and detailed reading, revision reading enables the reader to then know how much of the material they might have understood.
Also, revision reading encompasses the summary of all the main points, thus enabling the reader to then have a summarized view of the entire material which has been read. This allows the reader to always go back to their summary and confirm points which may have not been clearly understood.
Stages in reading a text: By being a self-conscious reader, one is able to know how much of the text is being understood. What is not yet understood? and how best they can approach the problem?. Being a self-conscious reader also allows you know how much of the text has been covered in a specific time and how much of the text is left to be covered in what little time available. These are some of the steps a reader is expected to follow before reading the main pages of the book:
Read and understand the title of the text being read.
Examine the organization of information in the table of content from top to bottom
Read heading and sub headings of the material (book).
Look at graphs, diagrams or tables in the text (if any is available)
Read any questions or summaries at the end of the chapter (if any is available).
Read the introduction, authors note(if available) and the conclusion
Read the first sentence in each paragraph of the material (book).
It seems like a lengthy thing to do just because you want to read a book. The truth is once you have done this, you would be able to understand what the writer of the material (book) was aiming to achieve through his book. It also gives you an idea of what you would see in the book as you delve deeper into the book. This also makes understanding the material (book) a bit easier.
Once this is done, you can now read the book chapter by chapter.
After reading, you are advised to have a short period of mental backtracking (recap), before going ahead to analyze the material (book).
There is really no other effective or efficient means of ensuring a 100% success in academic reading other than the steps given above, considering the fact that these are the very same steps that a large number of successful people such as Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg adopted during their short spells at Harvard University. If followed consistently, this is the most efficient, effective and result giving way of attaining academic excellence through academic reading. Students would find these methods easy to adopt and utilize to the maximum. Students who are not really interested in reading would find out that the processes outlined here could help them to develop a strong reading mentality. Teachers could also pick one or more thing about reading skills and help inculcate this into students.
Parents also contribute to ensuring an effective and efficient reading pattern of their wards. A Students who's is troubled because his parents are not able to cater for him financially will not concentrate and this doesn't help in enabling the student read to the maximum. Support from both parents and teachers would ensure that the University student concentrates in achieving his academic excellence by adopting the effective and efficient reading patterns stated earlier.
