Miller, a psychologist at Princeton University, refers our memory capacity as, ”magic number seven.” When people make their friends to memorize a list of ten numbers, they usually remember five to nine. Besides, if the list becomes larger or more complicated, people don”t even remember five to nine. (Schenkman). Today, students do not only learn knowledge from school but also have various types of information with the internet. They read and check daily news, email, weather, and even writings on somebody”s blogs. The amount of information, a student learns in a single day, is enormous because of the internet. Then, it would likely lead students to difficulty on remembering about ”valuable knowledge,” learned from school. Second, using the internet can cause students” brain to be exhausted. As I mentioned above, students cannot remember all knowledge they have learned, and forget some amount of knowledge. When students try to recall that knowledge forgotten, this process suppresses a their brain. Mikhail Rabinovich, a neuroscientist and a professor at the Bio-Circuits Institute at University of California San Diego, explains the interactions between recalling and brain. ”Memorizing seven items requires about 15 times the suppression needed to recall three. Ten items requires inhibitory powers that are 50 times stronger, and 20 or more items would

First, internet use can lead students to be aggressive and violent. It is well-known that playing video games influences students to be more aggressive. In 1990, two teenagers, high school students in Colorado, killed 15 people. The students often play a game ”Doom,” first-person shooter game, and they became indistinguishable between game and reality (”Electronic”). Today, however, it is not the only problem from playing video games. By development of the Internet, students have more opportunity to play violent games. Students might be vulnerable to violence in these days. Second, another negative mental influences from internet use is that a depression. It is called ”narcissism” when a person pursues admiration from other people. Narcissism happens in many places on the internet in these days. To feel narcissism, many students frequently change online profile, upload recent
pictures, or leave a comment to others. However, today”s Internet narcissism is based on sharing of a communication. Thus, narcissism cannot be subsisted when it doesn”t attract online visitors (”Forever”). For an instance, when one uses Facebook, they often upload pictures to get more responses. If people don”t leave a comment or suddenly become uninterested, he/she would become frustrated. They can be psychologically wounded and experience a sudden depression. Third, internet use can bring students an obsession. Some people use the internet such as a social networking service to remove their anxiety and to feel a relief from society. Students might be able to relieve their social anxiety, but it can cause another problem; stalking. According to Mashable, a news editor, 60 percent of adolescents visit their ex-girlfriend or ex-boyfriend”s online profile more than once in a given day (Mashable). Some of them even make a new account and add his ex-girlfriend or ex-boyfriend by pretending to be a different person. For this reason, a number of female users have feared or closed their accounts.
Therefore, the internet is harmful for students. The internet takes many hours away from studying in some ways, and students can be tired, forgetful, depressed, or aggressive because of exessive internet use. However, it is nonsense that never using a computer in this information-oriented society. Home environment is one of the methods to protect students from their excessive internet use. Parents should specifically guide their children regarding how to judiciously use the Internet. Parents also should set a rule for Internet use and encourage their children if the rules are followed. Many psychological therapists advise that overwhelming push can lead to certain kinds of addictions as a drug, gambling, or an alcohol addiction.
