This review discusses on The Star's news article title, Teacher and Student Drown, Four Missing after Dragon Boat Mishap (2010). The purpose of this review is to understand clearly how the writer writes and explain the incident that had happened through the writer's point of view and research by also having my own opinion towards the article. The article been written clearly of showing how the tragedy incident happened, what had causes it and who were involved throughout the whole incident but additional information could be included in the article to give the article a more complete understanding towards its reader.
According to The Star (2010), it reports about the capsized of the dragon boat that had happened in Georgetown, Penang to the school team of Chung Ling High School with 18 people in it, killing the life of a teacher, a student and four other students are still missing. The writer of the article wrote clearly on the incident that causes the boat to capsize by explaining how it happened. However, details such as the incident location in Macallum Street Ghaut on whether is it the same location as the place of competition is not clearly explain. Besides, issue on the change of venue and life jackets not used by certain students.
In The Star, the writer described clearly of how the dragon boat mishap that causes the death of the teacher and the student. With the clear description of how the incident happened that make readers able to picture how an incident likely occur. For example, The Star (2010) wrote that strong waves hit the boat when they were having training preparing for a boat race competition in July, that causes them to lose control that crashed into a tugboat and they were hit twice by the strong waves before all were thrown out of the boat. Moreover, the article include the names of the 4 students who are missing so that the public is aware who are these students and who are the people in the boat.
On the other hand, in the article it reports that the tragedy happened at Macallum Street Ghaut but it states the dragon boat competition venue is at Bandar Sri Pinang (The Star, 2010). Therefore, is Macallum Street Ghaut the same location as Bandar Sri Pinang? People will be wondering whether these both locations are the same, thus if it's the same will the student's safety for competitions in the near future be affected as what had happened to the teacher and the student. In my opinion, the writer should include these facts about the location that the venue was changed last year from Teluk Bahang to Bandar Sri Pinang fishermen's jetty where the incident happened less than 1km away from it (Lian, 2010).
Furthermore, throughout the years the competition has always been held at Teluk Bahang, but why the authority changed the venue to Bandar Sri Pinang? People will be curious to know as last year during Pesta Pulau Pinang a question was also raised by Wanita MCA chief Tan Cheng Liang, on the issue of why the authority changed the venue without first seeking advice from those who are familiar with such competitions as a participant from last year's race was injured (The Star, 2009). Adding to it, the article did mentioned Macallum Street Ghaut where they were having training with further details from Penang Dragon Boat Web Site (2010), states that they been having training there for few years base on their own decision under the care of their personal club.
In addition, the article written on the issue of life jackets that some of them was pulled without it. The reason behind it of them not wearing life jacket could have extra explanation as not only just stating the numbers of them not wearing but should indicate why they are not. From Bernama.com, Kuah Zi Xun, one of the survivors in the tragedy mentioned that life jackets was not enough for all of them and they believe it was just a training session therefore most of them did not wear them (Ariffin, 2010). The reason of the school team not wearing life jacket has been known, but how authority is taking this issue seriously. The public are concern for the safety of people in the future who may engage competitions in the sea or outing. For instant, Wanita MCA Tan Cheng Liang states that safety measure of the participant's safety have to be taken with proper regulations and laws (The Star, 2010). Moreover, school management is requested to report activities they are having to security authorities so that student's safety is able to be monitored said by State Education Director Ibrahim Mohammad (Lian, 2010).
In short, the writer was well explain on how the incident happened that causes the capsized of Chung Ling High School's dragon boat. On the contrary, certain issue are not included for further understanding is of the locations of the incident happened and the location that the competition will be having on whether is it the same location. Also, why the venue has to be changed when all these years the same location has be used to conduct the competition. Lastly, life jacket has been a necessary item for safety measure but students were saved has been reported not wearing the life jacket and the respond of the authority's regarding it. Overall, the incident that killed the teacher and the student with missing students due to boat mishap is a waking call towards the authority of the danger on having activities in the open sea and therefore they need to take this issue seriously by ensuring the safety of the people through a proper safety measure.
