First and foremost, electronic books bring a promising impacts towards environment since they reduce the needs of trees for the purpose of printing. According to the site "Environmental Science & Technology," (2008) " Reducing paper use does more than save trees. Pulp and paper mills are also a major source of pollution. The reason that pulp and paper mills are contributing to pollution is because they release harmful gases to atmosphere such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, carbon monoxide and particulates, which cause global warming, acid rain, smog and what worst to human, is respiratory problems."(p.4242-4245) Scientifically, paper bleached with chlorine release dioxin, a carcinogenic substance. It is always a good idea to save the environment by recycling. But another things to be consider are the pollution that comes from the factories that are recycling the old papers. Black, contaminated smoke are released to the air without filtering them first. Plus, all the goliath trucks that collect recycled trash from residential areas to factories emit tons of poisonous gases.
Secondly, the advanced technology especially internet facility is used by public as well as the development of software and applications by the companies which manufacture electronic books. In term of user, people will tend to find sources of information from ebook rather than searching for suitable references from thousands of books in a library. User can search any references from wide titles of ebooks available on net just by clicking, and no need to spend long time searching books which are already borrowed by others, manually in library. Electronic book brings lots of benefits for people in term of its practicality. It is very space saving as it does not need any shelf. There are multiple ways of keeping ebooks. User can save them in a compact disc which approximately able to store around 500 ebooks or by using a portable devices such as a pen drive. Another way of keeping electronic books is by using reading devices, which is a very outstanding portability concept. Such example is a Personel Digital Assistant (PDA). According to Harroff, (2010) "Most reading devices hold multiple titles, for instance, the EBookMan which is able to store 16 megabytes of 40 electronic texts".
Furthermore, technology is increasingly advanced with the various inventions of new E-reader software and devices. One of the solutions for problems of eye fatigue, aroused by readers is E-paper. It is less glare and no backlighting on the screen which provide comfort to readers. Examples of this device are Sony Reader and iRex iLiad reader. Another is Amazon.com's e-reader which use this technology of e-paper too. With recent developments of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology, e-paper technology serves better. Other than that, other example of e-reader devices are applications in iPhone and iTouch by Apple. However, the applications will be much preferable if the display were larger. According to Nelson, (2008) " What is more is the use of software which are commonly used. For instance, most campus library host multiple e-book services for patrons, and each typically has its own e-reader application". Nowadays, these kind of software mostly have new features such as sharing, rating and others.
The next impact brought by the presence of E-book is on business side, e-books publishing and distributing prognosticate a good increase of sales in recent market. In addition, it is expected that higher education system will adopt e-books technology in the next coming years. Next, the use of E-books in education allow students to have more experience with technology for learning purpose. All course materials are provided in E-book form as students need to access them on net conveniently. The use of E-books are much preferable over printed books by students are mostly for certain purposes. First, for conducting research as students may search for journals, previous research papers and references from various sources in form of electronic books. It is much easier instead of looking for the desired references in numerous volumes. Secondly, electronic book are also suitable for reference as some students prefer digital reference than a thick textbook. In some cases, students are unsought to buy textbooks because of high cost and inconveniently transported. Besides, students prefer E-book for leisure readings too. Though this purpose is less preferable than the other two, still some of readers like to enjoy their readings electronically. The reason behind this is because, some famous books are also available in E-books. Readers just have to download them with low price for its Intellectual Property (IP) purpose. For example, Harlequin romance novels which can be read as e-books via mobile phone.
Last but not least, E-books bring new impact in education as electronic books consist of various multimedia features to assist readers in term of reading and writing. Among the many vast multimedia features are audio narrations, video, lively animations, simulations, hyperlinks, built-in dictionaries as well as pronunciation guides. These interactive features are unavailable in printed books. Grimshaw (2007) states that " Rich multimedia features such as audio narration, sound effects and animations embedded into electronic books can help children to improve their reading comprehension skills." Other than that, electronic books could be very helpful to assist children with autism, a disease of disabilities of brain development. According to Grant, (2004) "By using electronic program consisted of flashcards with words on them, letter identification and short reading passages, children showed good improvement in their development of vocabulary." This reflects that electronic books are also be beneficial to children as a way of teaching and learning.
To conclude, the positive impacts of electronic books cover all aspect, from reading and writing improvements, advance in technology, business to environment preservations. It is undeniable to expect that electronic books productions may exceed printed books version. However, both have its own advantages as well as disadvantages. The inclusion of electronic books in library collections will be quite beneficial in the next coming years.
