Looking At The Different Types Of Advebs English Language Essay

Published: Last Edited:

This essay has been submitted by a student. This is not an example of the work written by our professional essay writers.

In this essay I'm going to analyze one the aspects that were on the list; the aspect I have chosen is "Use of so, such, too and enough." They are adverbs used with adjectives and they indicate degree. In English, It's important to know when they are used and what they want to express; that will be explained at the next lines, giving examples from the text.

In the text we can find some times these adverbs. So can be found nineteen times; such, once; and too can be found three times; however in this text we can't find the adverb enough, but I'll explain it, because it belongs to the same class.

Some examples of the different uses can be found in the text. We'll start with the adverb "so". The first use and the most common, is "so + adjective", and it's used to show extremes. We can find in the text many examples, like "…the smooth greyness of the ceiling which was so clean and gray, and then suddenly he saw a fly walking upon it." Other usage very common is "so + adjective + that", and it's used to show extremes which lead to certain results. We have many examples, like "Something had occurred to him; something so fantastic and absurd that for a moment he felt like…" or "and suddenly the pain became so intense that it affected his head and…" The last use I'll talk about is "so + adverb", and his use is to show extreme actions. We can't find any example of this use, but one could be "She spoke so quickly that I couldn't understand her".

The adverb "such", as I said, we only find once in the text, and his use is "such + judgemental noun + that", and it's used to emphasize showing certain results. The sentence of the text is "so that his left leg was uncovered. She did it in such a way that his bandaged stump remained under the sheets."

The last adverb we can find in the text is "too". It is used to express "more than necessary", and it has three different usages. The first is "too + adjective/adverb", and we can find an example in the sentence "They never looked at anything for more than a moment and they moved too quickly from one place to another in the room." The second usage is "too + adjective or adverb + to + verb", and we can find it in "There was something about her movements also. They were too sharp and nervous to go well with the casual manner in which she spoke." Finally, it has more usages that aren't reflected on the text, they are "Too + adjective o adverb + for" and "too + much/many". Other meaning that "too" has is the same as "también" in Spanish; there's this example in the text: "this one, too, was far away, but there was the same deep undulating bass and the high singing tenor, and there was no mistaking it."

Finally, as I said in the introduction, "enough" can't be found in the text, but I'll give its usages, because it belongs to the same class of word, and these four adverbs are always considered together. We use 'enough' to mean "sufficient" and in a negative sentence to mean "less than sufficient or less than necessary"; for example, "You're not working fast enough, you won't finish on time."  We can use 'enough' without a noun if the meaning is clear. "There's a lot of food but not enough for everyone." Furthermore, we use 'enough of' or 'too much/many of' before pronouns and determiners, for example

"Not enough of my friends are coming to the party."
