All my life I have been thin because I was so active in dance and drill team. As I grew older I was able to stay thin working retail for 5 years. I was on my feet and unloading merchandise for eight to ten hours a day. I was able to eat what ever I wanted and not see the effects. When I quit retail I moved to a desk job but kept my eating habits the same. It has slowly caught up with me. I have put on twenty pounds in two and half years. It doesn't help that as people get older their metabolism slows down. I also live alone and eat out a lot. My problem would be to eat healthier. I go to the grocery store and don't know where to being to find foods that are healthy for me. We all know fresh fruits and vegetables are healthy but what about all the food in between. For example: meats, soups, desserts, TV dinners, low fat and low sodium products. Just because a product may say low fat, does that mean it is good for me?

Information Gathered

I wanted to gather information on healthy food choices. I don't want any quick diet fixes. I want to make a lifestyle change. I want to reach my goal weight but be able to keep that weight from ever coming back. I started my search at the University Library. I selected the database ProQuest for health information. I first started by searching "eating healthy" but that just brought me to the results for people with certain diseases and how they can eat healthy. That was not what I was looking for. Then I searched "ways to eat healthy". It brought up results for how adults and children can change their eating habits for the better. I want information to help me know what foods to buy at the grocery store and what are good choices to make when eating out.

Perspective and Validity

I found a book called The Dish on Eating Healthy and Being Fabulous by Carol O'Neil, M.S., R.D. I chose to use this book to help find a resolution to my problem because the book was chosen by USA Today as the "one of the top five diet books you got to have". When choosing this source I looked up Carol O'Neil's credentials. She is "a member of the American Dietetic Association, O'Neil earned a master's degree in Nutrition and Communication from Boston University and a bachelor's degree in Foods and Nutrition from Florida State University". (O'Neil, 2009) I determined the validity of her work by the recognition she has received. "O'Neil has been recognized with many honors throughout her career including: an award for the Best TV Food Journalist in 1999 at the World Cookbook Fair in Versailles, France; accolades for journalistic excellence from the National Restaurant Association, the American Heart Association, and the American Dietetic Association". (O'Neil 2009) She has a lot of experience in nutrition so her perspective shouldn't be biased on way or another because she knows what works and what doesn't.   "An expert on general nutrition and weight control, she is an award winning journalist leading CNN's coverage of food, nutrition and cuisine for nearly 20 years. Now she's putting those talents to work on and off camera - on The Today Show, Fox & Friends, WebMD. A respected authority in her field, O'Neil has collaborated on national nutrition campaigns with Quaker, Tropicana, Centrum, Dannon, PepsiCo, Nabisco, Campbells and Panera Bread". (O'Neil 2009) She has written a lot of different

articles and hosted several different show on Nutrition so I believe she is credible source to start my research.

Consideration

I will use the information that I gathered to evaluate what food choices I am making now that are bad for me and ways I can change them. I want to us the information provided by Carol O'Neil to be able to reform my fridge and pantry. For example I need to stop eating those Girl Scout cookies. I would like to make better choices at the drive thru window and at the dining table at my favorite restaurant. Instead of ordering fries I should order the baked potato. In consideration for these solutions I will evaluate what plans I will be able to make work for me. I don't like a lot of leafy green vegetables but I can discover new ways to cook them or another alternative to take their place. Overall reading The Dish on Eating Healthy and Being Fabulous could be just what I'm looking for to change my habits around.

In my day to day life, I can honestly say that I have just figured out what problem that I really have and need to solve. I have a major problem taking on too much at one time. I tend to take on more than I can handle and figure out ways to make it work, whether it be pulling an all nighter or moving my schedule around in order to make sure that I can get everything done and still have time to give my son a bath and put him to bed myself. Most recently, I was offered a manager's position at work, which I very happily took because of the money. Now I didn't realize that I would be working as much as I am, on top of school, and trying to raise my son the best I can. We also have just put our house on the market as of this past Tuesday, and have had over 12 showings since, with one offer as of last night. This is amazing, but the time and effort it takes to get everything set up for each showing,......

The problem that seems to affect my day-to-day life the most is having enough energy to complete my day. On most days I find myself starting my day at 6:00 a.m. By 6:30 I am sitting in front of my computer at work, completing school assignments and gathering information that will help me with my papers and discussion questions. At 8:30 I start my work day, which typically requires more research into developing plans and procedures that will help when disaster strikes our area. At 4:30 p.m., I will normally find myself leaving work and heading to some type of ballgame that I will be officiating. Whether it is football, basketball or baseball; I spend the next 3 - 5 hours on a field running around and using up what energy I have remaining.

When this typical day is over I head home for the night. I always like to spend a little time with my son and wife before going to bed, so I may not find myself in bed and asleep before 11:00 p.m. Just to get myself up 7 hours later and do it all over again. Even when it comes to weekends when I should be recuperating, I will still typically have some type of ballgame which leaves me with little energy when it is all said and done.

When it comes to gathering information to help me solve this problem, there are many different areas I can research. For one, I can search the internet for ideas on how to keep my body healthy and able to withstand the abuse that I put it through. I can also seek help from my physician, who can give me pointers on staying fit so that everything that I do does not take so much out of me. All of the sports that I officiate help me to stay healthy, but the research can help me to find the energy to keep up with them. Energy is something that can be built over time. I know that I can adjust the amount of sleep my body needs, by getting use to a certain amount each night. I also know that I can get my body used to the day by building a routing and sticking to it. If, for instance, I decide to stay up until 2 a.m. on the weekend I know that I will fall out of a routine and my energy level with pay for it until I catch up.

The key to good research is finding valid source that provide information that can be proven factual and beneficial to the person doing the research. Not all of the information that I find will be helpful to me, but through proper evaluation of the material I am being provided with I should be able to determine what of it I can use.

When I begin to spend time evaluating the information that I gather and determining what of the information I can use successfully, I must look at it from the perspective of the writer. I want to ensure that the information is from a source that will provide me with valid information. I do not necessarily want conservative tactics, but things that can be validated and used in such a way that it does not hurt my body and mind. For instance, in researching this topic I have found that if I drink more water throughout the day and stay away from caffeine I do not have a "crash" mid-afternoon. This is information that I found from a valid source that has helped to keep my energy level up.

Once I have researched the problem and been provided with possible solutions to keeping my energy level up, I will then put the information into practice. I will take small steps when adding these techniques to my day. I will not try to add everything at once, simply so I do not feel overwhelmed. By adding these techniques one step at a time, I allow my body to adjust to the changes that I am making without overwhelming it all at once.

It has to be understood that simply by fixing one problem I will not fix the entire issue. Other problems add to the issue that I have with keeping my energy level up. I may need to learn how to better manage time so that I am not trying to put in 18 hour days every day. Are there ways that I can shorten the amount of time seperated from my day for work? Can I spend more time doing research on weekends, so that I do not have to do so much in the morning? These are things that I can do that will help me to adjust my problem with maintaining energy, while still completing the tasks that I have set forth for myself on a day-to-day basis. When all of the problem solving techniques are combined, I can hope that I find myself with more energy throughout the day, and wake up feeling more refreshed in the mornings.Research Strategy Paper

When all of the problem solving techniques are combined, I can hope that I find myself with more energy throughout the day, and wake up feeling more refreshed in the mornings.

Time management is one of the problems that I encounter on a day-to-day basis. I thought that I would definitely have more time on my hands after being unemployed after twenty two years on the job. Well, that is not the case; I actually feel as though I have more things to do in contrast to me working on a nine to five daily basis. My Monday to Friday schedule consists of having my eight year old son up and ready for school by eight thirty, which could be very challenging on some mornings. I then drive my eldest daughter to her college for nine thirty, which is not too far from home (until her car gets repaired) whereas I return home by ten fifteen. Next, I straighten up the house a bit and grab a bite to eat. When my youngest daughter wakes up at about twelve in the afternoon, I have a little chit chat with her for a while before she drives to her college and then I try to do some assignments for a short period until it is time to pick my son up from school at three pm. After picking him up from school I cook, help him with his homework if necessary, make sure he takes a shower and then go back on the computer to do more required assignments. There are days when I sometimes feel overwhelmed, but with a wise time management system, I know I would be able to have some time for myself and a more assured feeling without any pressures.

The information that I would need to help me solve this problem would be an effective time management schedule. Once I get a schedule which consists of a listing of the time of all my tasks that has to be done within each day, I will be able to have total control of my life even with time to spare. I would be able to obtain this information from my academic weekly reading from chapter one. This chapter provides me with an array of information on managing my time and putting my priorities in order.

The Process I would use to evaluate the information that I gather would be to take all the information that pertains to strengthening my time management and sorting them into a system that would best work for me on a daily basis without fail. And, I would definitely consider validity in my quest to improve my time management. I would have to take all the tools that I am considering to better my time management and make sure that everything that I am applying is sound and authentic because the end results will not be satisfactory without checking on its validity.

I would use all the information that I have gathered and categorize everything as it will pertain to a step-by-step function in conquering my time management problem. For instance, procrastination: the key to fighting procrastination is to imbed in my mind that my assignments must be done right away and not to be put off until the mere end of its due date. And One of my biggest reasons for procrastination is that there may be instances where I think that an assignment is effortless and I just keep putting it off until the last minute to find out that it could have been much more easier if I would have just completed it from the beginning instead of waiting and now having to rush through it with incurring errors. Another thing that I would use to resolve time management would be the syllabus. The syllabus outlines all of my assignments and schedules for each due date. The syllabus is like a bible to me because everything is listed clearly as to what and when an assignment is needed to succeed in this class. It also gives me enough time to complete my assignments prior to the due date just in case I will be having a very busy schedule on any given day or week.

All in all, time management is essential in achieving a person's goal in education. It takes a lot of sacrificing in order to obtain the overall achievement within a person's goal. And the fact that one has to tackle work, children, and family is an even bigger dilemma, but can be achieved with time, skill, organization, and order.

Research Strategy Paper

Growing up, I was not exactly introduced to the world of finances. I had a checking account, a savings account and a check book but I never was sat down and shown how to balance the checkbook or told taught how to save money. I kept an idea of the amount within my checking and made sure I never went over it with purchases. The savings account had money in it but I never touched it until I left. I knew how to save money, how to pay bills, but nothing to really plan for the future. Nowadays, it is even more crucial to understand how to go about working your money with everything turning electronic. There are really no more physical reminders i.e. the checkbook, to help you remember. Instead you log on to the computer, log into your banks website and hope they have everything up to date. Being older now, I have more responsibilities and of course more bills; not to mention I will someday retire and need to have money for me to live on. I cannot continue to just look at my accounts and move some money into a savings account or move it into checking when I need to make purchases.

The first kind of information to acquire and understand is where the money is going. Knowing when it is coming in (my paycheck) and when it is going out and where. This can be gathered by collecting a recent month's bills, getting a statement from each of my banks and looking at the payment schedule from my job and coinciding that with when the money is available in my account, which can also be gained from a bank statement. Many of us have more than one back nowadays, due mostly to shopping for rates on various purchases or credit cards. I need to make sure I have all of them or I may miss something.

The second piece of information to gather is what kind of programs are out there to assist a person in understanding their finances. First and foremost, would be to talk to my main financial institution. In my case it is a credit union. Many financial institutions have people on staff that can perform this function and most of the time it is a free service. In my case, my main accounts are through Navy Federal Credit Union. They have links and references that can help an individual, such as me, create a spending plan (How to create a Spending Plan). In the recent years a website has come to light that offers multiple ways to track spending habits and even provide feedback on possible ways to save. This website is Mint.com.

Before using any new type of software, especially if it is free, it is best to look at what other people have said by reading reviews and exploring the site itself. This is where one has to take into account both personal views and professional views. After perusing an online search "mint.com reviews" I found two that demonstrate the differences between each type of view. PCMag.com is considered a leading authority on technology and delivering Labs-based, independent reviews of the latest products and services. (PCMag.com) The second review I found was located at About.com. This site takes reviews and information from those with the necessary background but usually has a more personal view depending on the author. (Elmblad, 2008)

Once all the information is gathered it is all a matter of what the individual prefers or is comfortable with. Some may find that the self done financial planning will not work for them, they need outside help and the price does not matter. Others will embrace the tools provided and come up with their very own spending plan and will successfully manage their budget. The process to decide this is to look at the different options and be truthful with yourself regarding your habits. The more customer-friendly a product is the more an individual will feel comfortable taking on the full responsibility. Other items to take into account are how biased the information is. Someone that works for the company will, of course, be trying to sell the product more than an independent study. It is important to keep that in mind.

Overall, in order to resolve my personal issue with finances, I need to carefully weigh the options and come up with a spending plan that will work for me. There are many products out there that will help me to do this, but I still need to look into each one. Things to take into consideration would be if or how much a product costs, Mint.com is free however other products such as Quicken, has multiple tiers of money management and the higher up ones come at a price. Product reviews let me know if the product works properly and how other customers are employing it. If I want to use my bank, the cost of an accountant or if there are even services available will have a definite impact on whether or not I use them. The resolution of this issue is a journey, one that does not end, but in order to even start I need to do my research.
