I idolize Elizabeth Tierney and I try to learn how to communicate better by reading her books. Elizabeth Tierney books taught me how to speak to people in a professional way. By reading her books, I am learning to recognize the important role communication plays in their organizations and how the realities of today's complex, global markets require effective communication skills. For me, this is very useful and helpful to me as a student, especially when interact with others.
As a student, I am now beginning to realise the importance of communication skills.
Verbal communication skill is a part of communication skills. It is one way for people to communicate face-to-face with the use of words and good grammar. Some of the key components of verbal communication are sound, words, speaking, and language. It usually has the power to create emotions and move people to take action. It can also shows a person reality with the sense of eye, ears, feelings, words and symbols are used to create the meanings. In this area of communication skills, I have learnt so many things. One of them is we need to be positive when talking about negative situations.
Non-verbal are another part of communication skills. It can show whether a person understands something when it is told to him. Non-verbals can come in the form of facial expressions, body movements and gestures (Gilbert, 2006). In the area of communication skills helping me as a student, I have learnt some tips from Mr. Gilbert on giving speeches and talks. Those tips would be of good use to me during presentations.
The most important thing that a presenter should express is a positive body language. It is also a part of communication skills. When I first heard about 'body language' at a seminar in 2008, I became very excited about it that I wanted to learn more. The speaker told us about some of the research done by Professor Ray Birdwhistell at the University of Louisville, which had shown that more human communication took place by the use of gestures, postures, position, and distances than by any other method. This includes having multiple hand motions, speaking clearly and having a good eye contact with the audience. The presenter can also read his audiences body language to know whether they are interested, or whether they understand a particular point. These gestures include facial expressions and body posture. This knowledge can help me while presenting. I can make my presentation interesting by expressing good body language and I would also be able to see if my audiences understand what I am trying to impart by evaluating their body language.
One of the next skill which can help me as a student is writing skills. Writing skill covers the area of writing letters and the ability to control the usage of words. This skill useful to me by helping me explains a point in lesser words without altering the main idea. Writing skills also covers areas of writing appropriate introductions and conclusions. These two elements are important in an essay or letter because they help to support the main idea. In the end, writing skills can help me make my own notes, write drafts and write a perfect summary which I would find to be handy while pursuing my degree studies.
The last skill in communication which would help me as a student is reading skills. The reading skill is a very critical factor because this factor is responsible for improving the learning ability. This would be extremely helpful to me especially while conducting researches because I would be able to understand better on my research. This skill would also help me to pick out the important points from any source because it would help me to skim and scan the article for points. Skimming and scanning is also another element of reading skills which would help me as a student.
In conclusion, communication engages the choice of the best communications channel, the technical know-how to use the channel, the presentation of information to the target audience, and the skill to understand responses received from others and also important to set a complete guide of most effective and winning communication skills. These five skills would help me extremely as a student in areas of communication such as passing on messages and communicating to an audience. By mastering all these skills, I would have an upper hand especially when I graduate from college because I would be able to communicate with anyone, anywhere and at anytime. Thus, I dare say that finding a job in the future would not be a problem for me.
