It is fundamental that everyone is skilled of reading, writing, and communicating. Obviously, many people lack the important skills needed for effective communication. There are lots of educated people in this current age but many of them have poor communication skills. Clear and planned manner of smooth language is also a most imperative and functional utility, it is the medium to express information. Besides, well organized and effective communication is always found as a success of a person such as personal relationships, between members of different ideas and cultures, and in one's personal and professional life. Hence, effective communication is the most important key that we use to transmit information.

Communication takes place all the times, and unexpectedly. Moreover, it happens either verbally or non-verbally. This can be seen in various activities. For example; listening, talking, watching movies, thinking, watching television programs, discussions, or mediating. Even though, a very silent person who may be communicating within himself as he is thinking of something. According to Hamzah, M. & Yusof, A. (2011), stated that the communication can be seen in several characteristics such as our personal lives, carrier advancement, Ethics in communication, adapting in a multi-culture society, and changes in technology and relationships.

2. Explanation of Verbal and Non-verbal Communication

2.1 Communication in Personal Life

Additionally, communication is the foundation of interaction between two or more people in personal life. Similarly, according to Murphy, P. (2007), when dealing with the arising issues in one's personal life, good and effective communication is vital. likewise, if we have any relationship with someone, communication is what sustain the affiliation jovial. In essence, instead of agreeing on everything, showing respect and talking with reality are more crucial. Since, the relationship becomes deeper and develops, appears a good example.

2.2 Communication in Career improvement

According to Malhotra, V. ( 2012) , stated that the effective communication plays a centre role of the usage of the words such as words, modulation, pronounciation, voice variation, pitch, and body language. He added that the correct tool to communicate the right messages at the most appropriate time can pick up a crises and encourage people to work toward success. As truly said by Dr.Zimmerman, (2009) communication works for those who work at it. This means communication takes place in all the times but it is imperfect.

In the globalization world, the first criteria of the job selection is not to be a first class degree but the effective communication skills. This is because the effective communication is a very essential component to make the organization and one's career success, which can be intra or external group. Apparently, an effective communicator has a high morality and humanity when dealing others. Meantime, the communicator prove that the words he/she articulates is attained positively or negatively. Hence, positive language is a powerful weapon and it can help to win hearts of others. In short, ethical matters in communication are associated to the integrity and reliability of responsibilities and respect of the persons communication.

2.4 Adaptation in Multi-cultural Society

According to Hamzah, M. & Yusof, A. (2011), assured that the effective communication ability is to be adabted in to various cultures and contexts, which bring harmonious and sustainable environment in the work place.

2.5 Effects of Changes on Technology and relationship

Moreover, technology revolution is the most whirlwind effect in the globalization world. Technology helps the delivery, sharing and receiving messages quickly. As it is a virtual communication, it has a broad impact to personal relationships and societies. Therefore, effective communication helps to change one's attitude and also to mould as an valuable person.

3 Types of Verbal and non-verbal Communication

Generally, verbal and nonverbal communication border the meaning of conversations and both are used during face-to-face negotiations. As Lee, B. (2011) explained, that the nonverbal signals are uniformly significant as the words and the voice modulation. Wherefore, verbal and nonverbal signals equally send a message and describe the relationship with others.

3.1 Organizational Communication

Obviously, organizational communication is observed in establishing an ideal organization. Besides, the communication focuses on formal and informal information that arises in the context of the organization. Besides, both formal and informal communication are found as downward, upward, horizontal, cross-channel, and grapevine communication. Apparently, each of these types has a different role with considered to suitability of the organization. According to Hamzah, M. & Yusof, A. (2011), also explicated that there are eight types of Communication found in the working environment. These are included as Interpersonal, intrapersonal, group, organizational, public, mass, intercultural, and online communication. In this assgnment, i will be elucidating organizational, interpersonal, and group communication.

3.2 Interpersonal Communication

Furthermore, interpersonal communication is highly interacted with each other. Most often, it involves emotions. For example, humanity and empathy are vital in realizing the feeling of others. Interpersonal communication is also known as very unique because it is direct, personal, informal, and spontaneous information.

3.3 Group Communication

Moreover, Hamzah, M. & Yusof, A. (2011), also clarified that group communication is gradually arises the interactions between people until it shapes an entity. Group communication normally happens to solve problems, to form new ideas, and to get new experience. In general, it can define exchanging and recieving information between group members.

4. Types of verbal communication.

According to Saylor, S. (n.d), mentioned that there are two main types of human verbal communication, speech and writing. In view of that, having more practice of speaking and writing makes one,s own effective communication skills excellent. Ever since, verbal skills go beyond in a wide variety of situations and styles, which consists both essential and advernced forms of personal interaction.

4.1 Written Communication

Evidently, written communication happens technically nonverbal, commonly uses ideas to convey words. For example, books, letters, email, texts, memos, magazines, newspapers and personal journals are used to express messages as written communication.

Another form of verbal communication requires no speech. Written communication, while technically nonverbal, commonly falls under the umbrella of verbal communication for the use of words to convey ideas. Books, letters, email, texts, memos, magazines, newspapers and personal journals are all examples of verbal communication.

4.2 Electronic Communication

In a fast developing world, electronic communication influences in a wide range. It is a speedy type of verbal communication. However, electronic communication involves its own set of rules. Likewise, using capital letters can be interpreted as blaring or not happy at the receiver. For a moment, it can arises misunderstandings and problems in the workplace. Spelling rules are not much concerned, they are often set aside. For example, allocating figures like "u" instead of "you" and "2" instead of "too", etc are very common. consequently, the effectiveness of the words and flow through of the sentence structures are in threat. Definitely, it effects to the current situation and up coming generations.

4.3 Spoken communication

According to Mosel, S. (2010), confirmed that both speech and oral communication are spreading information, ideas, attitudes, from one person to another. Affirming to this, an effective communication needs to have a clear vooice, good pronounciation, and the most sufficient meaning to convey the mesaages. Besides, an effective spoken communicator can also show some of the non-verbal communication skills. Likewise, posture and body language play a very important role in spoken communication.

5 Types of Non-verbal Communication

Generally, non-verbal communication is known as body language and facial expression. It is also used to support verbal communication. For example, a teacher asking to put the book on the table in verbal communication by pointing to the table. In many cases, we communicate information in nonverbal ways using groups of behaviors. For example, we might combine a frown with crossed arms and unblinking eye gaze to indicate disapproval. The following are some types of non-verbal communication.

5. 1 Facial Expression

Markedly, facial expressions are accountable for a huge part of nonverbal communication. Consider how much information can be conveyed with a smile or a frown. While nonverbal communication and behavior can vary dramatically between cultures, the facial expressions for happiness, sadness, anger and fear are similar throughout the world.

Noticeably, deliberate movements and signals are an imperative way to communicate meaning without words. Hence, common gestures contain waving, pointing, and using fingers to indicate numeric amounts. Other gestures are arbitrary and related to culture.

Another non-verbal communication form is paralinguistic, which refers to oral communication that is separate from actual language. This includes factors such as tone of voice, loudness, inflection and pitch. Consider the powerful effect that tone of voice can have on the meaning of a sentence. When said in a strong tone of voice, listeners might interpret approval and enthusiasm. The same words said in a hesitant tone of voice might convey disapproval and a lack of interest.

5. 4 Eye Gaze

Furthermore, looking, staring and blinking can also be important nonverbal behaviors. Think of how many relationships start with a man and woman making eye contact across a crowded area. Clearly, a playful wink tends to be more effective. whilst people come upon people or things that they like, the rate of blinking increases and pupils open. Looking at another person can indicate a range of emotions, including hostility, interest and attraction. adding to this, just as a bright smile when we say congratulations reinforces the sincerity of our words.

5. Discussion on verbal and Non-verbal Communication

 As mentioned before, communication skills are sharing thoughts, opinions through collective symbols of words and phrases. It is surely known that the good readers are good listeners and good listeners are better communicators. Good communication skills helps us   to   set out our goals with clarity, the course of actions that we need to initiate in pursuit of such goals, conveying our needs to people who may help us with our goals, and utilizing the available relevant resources. When we have realized your goals, we may share them with other people or use them in our working area.

According to Lee, B. (2011), stated that verbal communication serves as a vehicle for expressing desires, ideas and concepts and is vital to the processes of learning and teaching in combination with nonverbal forms of communication. In general, verbal communication is the orally expressed word and comprises real words, designed and inferred meanings, pitch and voice variation. For example, by asking permission from the teacher to go to the library. The communication that happen here is a very clear verbal communication. According to Hughes, C. (2010), convinced that the basis of communication is the interaction between people. Coupled with, some of the key components of verbal communication are sound, words, speaking, and language. Hence, verbal communication acts as the primary tool for expression between two or more people.

Verbal and nonverbal communications are both important ways of passing information from one person to another. As such, they play a key role in our day to day life. Verbal is the oral or unwritten way of communication and uses words, vocabulary, numbers and symbols as well as organization in sentences. Nonverbal communication refers to the process of communication through sending and receiving wordless messages, that is, through gestures, body language, posture, facial expression and eye contact.When we communicate verbally, be it in a presentation or in a conversation, the objective is get the message we are trying to pass understood. The receiver could be an individual, a group of people or an audience. Spoken words, unlike written communication, cannot be referred to unless they are recorded. Therefore, word choice is critical to ensure that the message is communicated. For instance, in our group of five people, we communicated with each other by speaking to each other as we discussed on different forms of communication. In verbal communication, how the message is communicated is as important as the message itself.  According to Warren & Windle (2010), Para verbal messages refer to the message that we transmit through tone, pitch and pacing of our voices and is said to account for 38% of what we communicate. As a result, in some cases, one of us could raise the tone of his or her voice in amazement while in other cases lowering this tone to make drive a point home.There are many ways in which nonverbal communication is realized and as such they form part of everyday communication through clothing, hairstyle, symbols or even architecture. A policeman salutes to show allegiance to authority. On the day we held discussions on different forms of communication, we were wearing very casual clothes since it was on a Saturday. One of the males in this group had unkempt hair since to him one was supposed to be rough on a weekend. Gesturing on the other hand is non-vocal bodily movement which may express warm and closeness or rejection, and is articulated using arms, hands or body and may also include nodding and rolling of one's eyes Warren & Windle (2010). For example, one of our group members kept on raising his hand to motion others to keep quiet when he wanted to speak.

Non-verbal communication is various methods (especially dynamic ) by which one individual sends or receives messages without the use of spoken language . It includes gestures , facial expressions , eye contact proximity , humor , paralinguistic , touching and non-linguistic gestures On the other hand , verbal communication is a process by which one individual sends or receives messages by using human spoken languages Both these communication processes have their own advantages and disadvantages

Through non-verbal communication a lot of information is being convened to the receiver . It can also supplement verbal communication . However there are higher chances of non-verbal communication being misinterpreted by the receivers than verbal communication Misunderstandings are more likely to occur across people belonging to different cultural backgrounds . Individuals communicating by nonverbal means should be aware of the different meaning that different individuals may perceive from his /her communication , especially when individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds are the receivers of the information

Studies have shown that people closer to each other tend to communicate more through nonverbal means compared to people not so close to each other . Nonverbal communication often develops in relationships . Often in a relationship , more weight is given to nonverbal portion of the communication compared to the verbal portion , and in case of a conflict the nonverbal portion tends to prevail over verbal communication . It took time during the relationship to understand one another better and develop a more effective mean of communication



Nonverbal and Verbal Communication

Posture is also part of non-verbal communication and is understood through such parameters as leaning, arm position, body orientation and body openness. Posture can communicate a person's degree of attention, the degree of involvement; assess the status of a communicator or even the fondness of an audience to a communicator Warren & Windle (2010). Sometimes, nonverbal communication can replace verbal communication. Instead of saying "hello" or "goodbye", for example, a wave can be used. In regard to this, I remember we waved to each other after leaving the hall where we were discussing on verbal and non-verbal communication. Gestures are also used with speech simultaneously and are closely coordinated with the speech and serve to elaborate the meaning of the co-occurring speech. Sign language involves the use of visually transmitted sign patterns that can combine orientation and movement of hands, arms or body to express the speaker's thoughts. Thus, we made different signs that are used to communicate in different areas of life. For example, one of the group members raised his hand just the way police men does on the road to motion vehicles to a halt.

In conclusion, verbal and nonverbal communications interact to bring about meaning. Sometimes, nonverbal communication comes before verbal, but it has not been successfully argued out which of the two ways is more effective. Both ways of communication interact in these constructive ways: repeating, complementing, substituting, accenting and regulating and ensuring of the message communicated.

Additionally, there are diverse types of communication. According to, Hamzah, M. & Yusof, A. (2011), approved that these various types of communication have different charactoristics and functions. Besides, communication process does not happen by chance, but it comprises a choice of situation and has exact reasons.

According to Cherry, K. (n.d), presented that non-verbal communication has a significant portion in our everyday context, either verbal communication or non-verbalcommunication. He also mentioned that non-verbal cues and behaviors such as postures, facial expression, eye gaze, gestures, and voice variations are used in our everyday life.

According to Cal, W. & Allyson, A. (nd), stated that in any organization, humanity is a very important quality to apply in any situations. Since, effective communication is earnestly depended regardless of the organizational hierarchy. For this purpose, according to Goldhaber (1986), cited with Hamzah, M. & Yusof, A. (2011), acknowlodged that communication in organization takes place in a whole system and influences by internally and externally. Also, communication involves messages and its flow, purpose, direction and media. As well as, it involves people, attitude, feeling, and the skill they possess.

Meanwhile, Wood, J.T. (nd) explained that communication has a powerful influence when people are together. Such as, we cannot avoid communicating, because they understand what we do as well as what we do not do. Even if we choose to be silent, we are communicating. Since, our challenge is to become more expert communicators. Likewise, work together to get credibility of effectiveness.

Furthermore, using language and settled in a verbal communication, both in speech and written, means deciding the language for the most appropriated according to particular uses, needs and situations. Besides, selection of language and verbal communication styles has close connection with the reciever's awareness of the person. Hence, the verbal communicator must be sensitive to the selection and use of language, which generate an effective communication.

Furthermore, most people at child birth have voiced, which create sounds.  Gradually, as a child grows, he/she learns how to form these sounds into words.  Some words may be imitative of natural sounds, but others may come from expressions of emotion, such as laughter or crying. However, words alone have no sense, just people can bring meaning into terminologies. Including both words and meaning mixed together, which direct to the maturity of communication. Particularly, language plays a creative role in verbal communication, which helps to direct a person to the right path using its causes and effects.


Non-verbal communication is not only crucial in a plain daily communication situation but also for the interpreter. Non-verbal communication can take various forms, each of which illustrates or replaces a certain part of the verbal communication. It includes many more elements than one might think at first.

When interpreters are in a working situation where the audience will not see them, non-verbal communication can represent a problem. The audience might even be tempted to believe that the interpreters have not done a good job.

In order to be able to work properly, interpreters need to make sense of non-verbal cues. This is only possible because a special part of our brain deals with the emotional part of the message. Not only intelligence but also emotional intelligence is needed for interpreting non-verbal elements.

Whether non-verbal communication supports the interpreters in their task or presents a difficulty, it will always play an important role.

Moreover , A person communicating by verbal means should also be aware of several factors such as style religious , cultural practices , beliefs and values . Often , personal and professional success varies depending on the ability to communicate.

We are always communicating in some sort of way and that may not necessarily mean we are saying something. Within today's rapidly growing organisations, there are a lot of different types of communications that effect interactions between people in a business no matter how big or small the business may be. 'An organization is a stable, formal social structure that takes resources from the environment and processes them to produce outputs' (BIS book). For an organisation to be run properly management must be successful in achieving its goals.   Management is 'the process of coordinating work activities so that they are completed efficiently and effectively with and through other people (Robbins, 2006, p9). This shows that management must be able to work well and communicate well with people within the business so activities can be completed. Stoner (1994) said that there were two main reasons why communication was so vital within management. First, 'communication is the process in which the management functions of planning, organising, leading and controlling are accomplished' (Stoner, 1994, p408). The second was that 'communication is an activity to which managers devote an overwhelming proportion of their time' (Stoner, 1994, p.408). This shows the link between an organisation, management and effective communication. 'Communication is an interpersonal process of sending and receiving symbols with messages attached to them' (Schermerhorn, 2004). Communication can be made in many different ways. According to Albert Mehrabian communication is collected in different elements, words, voice, tone and non verbal cues. Mehrabian found that words are 7% effective, tone of voice is 38% effective, and non-verbal cues are 55% effective.   This shows that non- verbal communication plays a vital role in the need for communication.

People can communicate in many ways, using both verbal and nonverbal methods. The ability to interpret verbal and nonverbal communication can be an asset in personal and business relationships, as nonverbal communication can give you as much information as the words people vocalize. It takes some practice to understand nonverbal communication, but knowing what to look for can make you a more-effective communicator.

Verbal Communication

Much of how people communicate is verbal, meaning it has a lot to do with the words people use. For example, a command might be a particularly forceful form of verbal communication, since you are telling someone what to do. A well-chosen word is often the most effective way to clearly tell someone what you want or need, and understanding what someone is asking for can contribute to understanding and eliminate confusion.

Verbal Nuances

Verbal communication is more than just the words you use, however. It is also important to understand the tone of the speaker. If someone shouts a command, then he projects hostility, while a person's suggestion delivered in a normal speaking voice is a much less harsh and usually more-effective way to communicate the same thing. For example, if someone says, "Get me a piece of paper," he might not fare too well. But he might get better results if he asks, "Could you hand me a piece of paper."

Nonverbal Communication

Many factors contribute to nonverbal communication. Small gestures can change the tone of a conversation or its effectiveness, such as looking someone directly in the eyes, touching the person while talking or maintaining a comfortable distance while speaking. During the course of a conversation, people tend to inadvertently give the other person a lot of information through nonverbal gestures, so learning to interpret these visual clues can help you to communicate with friends, family and co-workers.

Body Language

A major contributor to nonverbal communication is body language. Being aware of your own body language as well as another person's can make communication more effective. For example, crossed arms indicate that someone is distant and possibly hostile, and slouching in a chair can be interpreted as not listening as well. If you are sitting next to someone and the person angles their body away from you slightly, then the person is in a defensive position and communication will be more difficult.

As with any other element of human interaction, communication plays a crucial role in group effectiveness. As defined by Julia Wood in "Communication in Our Lives," group norms are "standardized guidelines that regulate how members act and how they interact with each other." In practice, norms may determine when meetings are held, how tasks are divided or even how members address each other. Therefore, norms are an important part of group communication, both verbally or nonverbally. Verbally, explicitly stating norms that govern group procedure increases the chances of group cohesiveness in all group proceedings. Nonverbally, norms play a role in how members address each other, what tone is used and how formally the group interacts.

Communication Climate

The type of communication that takes place between members determines the communication climate of the group. Once developed, the climate affects the style of both verbal and nonverbal communication. According to "Communication Counts," there are two primary types of communication climate in groups: supportive and defensive. Supportive communication climates feature communication built around verbal and nonverbal messages that exhibit mutual understanding and empathy among groups members. Groups that feature defensive climates are characterized by communication that evaluates other members. Critical tone of voice and messages exhibiting superiority are characteristics of this type of climate.

Conflict Management

As in all aspects of human interaction, conflict is inevitable between group members. Whether it is simply discussion regarding roles within the group, or a more substantial argument regarding group choices, the style of conflict management is important to group communication. Open verbal communication increases the chance of conflict being recognized within the group, as well as the ultimate source of the issue. Once identified, the style of communication climate plays a role in the type of management employed. More defensive climates increase the likelihood of competitive management styles focused on defeating each other, while supportive climates will foster management focused around working together toward a common solution.

Decision Making

The decision-making methods employed by a group can affect both the process of reaching the group's goal and the member interactions during that process. Groups that employ open brainstorming, featuring verbal messages encouraging a variety of ideas, are more likely to develop a final decision that all members support. Once the thought process has been completed, the ultimate decision-making process reflects the climate of the group and the norms established between members. If the group has established a supportive climate, the chances of a group consensus are more likely. In other cases, the group may require decision by majority vote, leader choice or outside arbitration.

Cross-cultural communication can be both challenging and rewarding. The challenge comes from understanding gaps in verbal and nonverbal communication patterns. Communication patterns can vary widely across cultures. The rewarding part of cross-cultural communication is the warm feeling you get when you convey a message and know that it is understood.

Volume of Voice

In Canada and Japan, people generally do not raise their voices in normal conversation. However, in Latin America, you may frequently hear people talking loudly and it is not because they are angry.

Power of Words

Children often say, "Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me." Words not only hurt, but they can destroy relationships and damage communication efforts. Your message might get lost in translation. Sometimes, an idea or concept does not exist in another language and a translator might not know how to express the idea. Also, some cultures place enormous importance on titles. If you do not address someone correctly, you risk offending that person.

Body Language

Humans have other communication tools aside from words. Body language has been around for far longer than verbal communication. Because it has existed for so long, certain nonverbal cues have different meanings in different societies. What might be acceptable in one culture can be considered rude and improper in another.

Gestures and Eye Contact

Gestures and eye contact are two examples of nonverbal communication that vary widely across cultures. In the United States, for example, making a circle with your thumb and forefinger and holding up your remaining three fingers means that you are fine. However, in most other parts of the world, that symbol is considered vulgar. The level of eye contact made during conversation also differs around the globe. American culture encourages eye contact. On the other hand, the Japanese consider eye contact disrespectful.
