Firstly, idioms and proverbs are the major features that reflect different cultures of each country. They are more important for English students of translation because understanding culture of each country can help them translate accurately the SL into TL. Moreover, idioms and proverbs can help us have a deep knowledge of different cultures. According to Wardhaugh (1986), "differences between different cultures are symbolized by the elements of language such as idioms and proverbs, and studying these languages and comparative analysis of idioms and proverbs between languages lead to realization of differences and similarities which exists between cultures."
Secondly, along with the development of the other fields in life, the demand for translation is becoming higher. Enhancing skills for translation is an important key for the translators to make translation documents better. Consequently, translating idioms and proverbs is one of the most difficult issues for all translators. It is necessary for translators to master completely skills of translating idioms and proverbs. As the preface of the book "English- Vietnamese dictionary of idioms" by Lã Thành (2006), it is asserted that: "Consequently, if we do not either learn idioms or interpret their precise meanings, we cannot understand deeply the speaker's meaning in communication or the sentence's meaning of the foreign documents". This comment evaluates highly the important role of learning idioms in communication and in the foreign texts. In addition, translating idioms and proverbs requires translators to master both the source language and the target language.
Finally, based on my full training at Hue College of Foreign Languages, translating idioms and proverbs has not been paid much attention by English students of translation. To HUCFL English students of translation, translating idioms and proverbs is one of the most difficult issues. Besides, strategies of translating idioms and proverbs must be developed by most students and other experienced translators.
As a result, I decide to do the research "Translating Idioms and Proverbs: An Investigation of HUCFL English Students of Translation" to explore attitudes and strategies of translating idioms and proverbs for HUCFL English students of translation.
Background of the study
Due to the global development of translation, many researchers in the world such as Moon (1998), Norrick (1985), Lee (2005), etc haven focused on idioms and proverbs in writing, translation and other related issues to create and complete the best translations. However, they mention these on different aspects; we still assert that idioms and proverbs have been paid attention much during the development period of linguistics. In Hue College of Foreign Languages, there are some researches in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Award of the graduation certificate such as Nguyá»…n. Huyá»n(1993) and Bùi. Nhi (1999). Specifically, Nguyá»…n (1993) just focused on her deep knowledge of idioms and did not mention on translating idioms in some related documents. In addition, translating idioms and proverbs is only one small issue, and has little attention in researching and building effective strategies of translation in Bùi (1999). To the aspect of proverbs Tráº§n (1995) researched fully on some main types of English proverbs and their equivalents in English, but, it has not mentioned any aspect of equivalent translation in Vietnamese. Besides, at Vietnam national university, Hanoi, university of language and international studies, Äáº·ng (2010) gave an in-depth study on English idioms and their equivalent translation in Vietnamese. But, it just focuses mainly on linguistic aspect of language. However, in recent years, investigation of using idioms and proverbs in translation has not paid attention much. Consequently, those issues lead me to do this research that mainly explores the aspect of translating both idioms and proverbs. Specifically, this research to investigate HUCFL English third year students toward using idioms and proverbs in translation, and find out some related problems affecting the using idioms and proverbs in translation.
Aims of the study
The research aims to investigate into attitudes of HUCFL English students of translation towards translating idioms and proverbs and difficulties HUCFL English students of translation encountering in translating them. In addition, based on the findings, some strategies of translating idioms and proverbs are employed to improve students' awareness of translating idioms and proverbs. The research mainly answers three following questions:
1, What are the attitudes of HUCFL English students majoring in translation towards translating idioms and proverbs?
2, What difficulties do these students encounter in translating idioms and proverbs?
3, What strategies are employed by these students to deal with difficulties in translating idioms and proverbs?
Significance of the study
Along with the world's rapid developments, our country's industrialization and modernization, and other fields in life in general, the requirements for translators are becoming stricter. Consequently, the quality of the translation has been paid much attention. Those ongoing developments require translators to improve their skills and knowledge of translation to catch up with the changes of the world and the customers' strict requirements. This research can become more practical because the findings from it can serve a useful reference for students majoring in translation in the years to come. Moreover, it can make the teachers and students majoring in translation have orientations to enhance their training and learning effectively.
Structure of the Study
This research includes five chapters:
Chapter 1 discusses on the background, aims and significance of the study.
Chapter 2 provides literature review and focuses on some related issues of the study.
Chapter 3 presents the methodology of the study including participants, research sites and research methods.
Chapter 4 describes the findings from the list of questionnaire concerning the HUCFL English students majoring in translation and theirs discussions.
Chapter 5 covers the summary of all results from the study and the further implications of the study to the HUCFL English students, the teachers and future researches.
Moreover, the appendix comprising the list of questionnaires and the references are at the end of the research.
