A Look At The Cyber Wellness Issue English Language Essay

The cyber-wellness issue I have identified is Internet and Game Addiction. Internet and Game Addiction is a psychological compulsion disorder where by an individual is unable to control his or her use of the Internet and is excessively addicted to video games, playing the games for numerous hours, which eventually causes marked distress and functional impairment, adversely affecting his or her 's daily life (Mark Griffiths, April 2000). This issue is important for my students because they are Secondary One Express students who are teenagers. This is a common problem among them. Anecdotal evidence indicates that the typical "addict" is a teenager, usually male, with little or no social life, and little or no self-confidence (Tokunaga, R.S. and Rains, S.A., 2010). The teenager has no social life as he is glued to his computer, surfing the internet or playing Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPGs) for several hours a day. MMORPGs cannot be completed: due to the regular introduction of new content. It is practically impossible to finish all assignments. This places a considerable burden on the player's time, as he is required to continue playing to 'keep up' with the game (Van Rooij, A. J., Schoenmakers, T. M., Vermulst, A. A., Van Den Eijnden, R. J. and Van De Mheen, D., 2011). My students may also be addicted to the internet due to the vast and attractive content on the internet which includes (personal needs) playing online games, visiting auction sites like Gmarket Singapore and EBay Singapore, surfing social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, Friendster, Flickr, Msn, Twitter, Posterous, Tumblr for blogging, chatting and uploading of pictures and videos as well as the incessant checking of emails from Yahoo, Google and Hotmail.

3. The activities in my lesson plan are designed, based on relevant dimensions of meaningful learning.

Lesson Plan for Mathematics (Speed)

There is learning by doing. I will show my Secondary 1 Express students an example of the mathematics chapter called "Speed" and will proceed to teach them know how to do the example. They will learn to do another similar example which reinforces their understanding of the concept.

There is self-directed learning as students are asked to do the questions I asked them to do by themselves. I will then go through the questions.

It also engages my students' prior knowledge of PSLE Mathematics which will make learning this topic of "speed" easier.

There is also use of real-world contexts as I have demonstrated an example of a man who is running 2.4km for his IPPT test in 12 min and 20sec. I will demonstrate how to obtain his average speed which is 2.4km divided by 12min and 20sec.

Lesson Plan for Cyber-Wellness (Internet and Game Addiction)

There is learning by doing. The students will research online for information. They will make their judgments about which points are relevant to the two questions posed.

There is self-directed learning. My Secondary 1 Express students will search the web for information. They will research for the ideas and post them on the Google Docs Website that I have created. In this way, they will take initiative and responsibility to learn on their own. Google Docs is good as it allows everyone to pen their ideas at the same time and saves valuable time.

It also engages my students' prior knowledge of a computer and search engines like Yahoo and Google. They will find it easier to complete the task at hand as they are tech savvy Digital Natives.

There is also collaborative learning as there is Jigsaw learning. I have split the class into small expert groups to do research and share their ideas. This is a win-win situation as everyone will learn better as a result of a collaborative effort.

There is use of real-world contexts as You Tube videos on Internet and Game Addiction are shown to the class to give them an impression of the severity of the psychological disorder.

4. The practical concerns that may occur during the implementation of the mathematics lesson are whether students will do the questions in class diligently before I go through the questions.

Another concern is whether students will know how to do the questions that I asked them to do in class, whether students will understand and tell attention to what I have taught in class and not be doing something else that is not relevant to Mathematics.

Also, students may need to go to the toilet at the start of the lesson so my mathematics lesson may be delayed. The students who went to toilet will be my biggest concern as they may miss out important information regarding the topic of "speed".

Also some students, who are sick, may be on medical leave. So, I may have to conduct remedial lessons for them.

As there will be students who still do not understand the lesson, I might have to conduct consultation sessions after the class to clarify the students' doubts.

For cyber-wellness lesson, students may not understand what they have read online and may have problems trying to decide which information to use. Another concern is whether students will do the questions diligently and contribute valuable information to the Google Docs for class discussion. I am also concerned if students will pay attention to what I have taught in class and not drift off into slumber land, due to the comfort of the air-conditioned ICT Resource Room.

Students also may go to the toilet at the start of the lesson. Hence, the expert groups might have less people to work together. I will advise my students to make do with the situation and carry on with their work. The student will come back later to rejoin the group.

Also, some students may be on medical leave. So, I may have to conduct remedial lessons for them.

As there will be students who still do not understand the lesson, I would have to conduct consultation sessions after the class to clarify the students' doubts.

2. Given a Discovering Mathematics 1A Express book, the Sec 1 (Express) student will be able to carry out the conversion of units e.g., (from m/s to km/h and vice versa) with 100% accuracy.

3. Given a Discovering Mathematics 1A Express book, the Sec 1 (Express) student will be able to apply the concepts of speed, uniform speed and average speed and do various problems with 100% accuracy.

Students will watch a You Tube video on "Speed (1994) Theatrical Trailer". Students will be posed two questions. Firstly, whether the people in the movie were moving at uniform speed. Secondly, the plot of the movie revolved around a bus with passengers, that had to move at above 50 miles/h (80km/h) or it would explode.

I will ask the students. Was the bus moving at a fast speed? Does the bus have to move at constant speed and why? This is good as it gives my students an impression of what speed and uniform speed is.

Development

I will then explain that speed is the total distance traveled by an object over time. An object is traveling at constant speed means; it covers a specified distance in a fixed amount of time. For example, a car that is traveling at 60km in 1h (60km/h).

Next, I will talk about a man who is running a 2.4km run for his IPPT test. Since the passing mark for CAT X (20-25 Years Old) is 12 min and 20sec. How many m/s should the person run to pass the IPPT test? The answer is 2400/740= 3.24m/s (to 2 decimal places). 3.24m/s is the average speed for this person who manages to run 2.4km/h in 12 min and 20 sec. Average speed is the measure of distance traveled in a given period of time.

I will explain the topic of converting m/s to km/h.

3.24m/s = 3.24 / 1000 * 60 * 60

= 11.66km/h (to 2 decimal places)

I will now convert from km/h to m/s.

11.66km/h = 11.66*1000 /60/60

=3.24m/s

Another example will be 6km/h and I will ask the students to do the conversion to m/s and then to km/h again. One student will be chosen to come up and do the example, before I go through the example.

I will show a question which shows an object travels 600m in 40 min (2/3h) and then travels 1.5km in 1h.

What is the average speed in km/h?

Average speed is (0.6*2/3 +1.5*1) / (1+2/3) = 1.14km/h. I will follow-up with a few more questions. I will get students to come up and solve the questions on the whiteboard, to check their understanding of the concepts.

I will recap the concepts of speed, average speed, as well as uniform speed to reinforce the learning objectives and clarify any doubts.
