Role of Simulation:
Simulation is the process of designing a prototype of a real system with which experiments can be conducted in order to understand the behaviour of the real system and also for evaluating various strategies for the system. Simulation has always been a cost-effective tool for engineers and managers since it assists them in taking quicker and reliable decisions. There are 3 different types of simulation (namely continuous, discrete-event and hybrid) and selection is done based on the manner of the real system.
Three different Simulation Software have been selected in this report and comparison is done based on the vital factors that have to be considered for purchasing and implementation decision.
Lanner simulation software enables managers to model, analyse and optimise processes for taking superior decisions in a risk-free environment. Lanner's L-SIM® and WITNESS® are the two major brands that are being supplied to simulation professionals which can be used by them for improving productivity, reducing cost and improving efficiency.
Flexibility is the major strength for WITNESS, which makes it suitable for use in automotive industries, where diverse processes like production, material delivery and distribution are being carried out. Whereas, L-SIM established itself in enterprise suites as a leading embedded simulation engine. Since simulation is a key component within Business Process Management, L-SIM has been keenly engineered in order to support the BPMN standards.
There are various other benefits which can be obtained by using this software, they are:
- Reduced operating costs and lower capital expenditure
- Reduced lead times
- Better resource utilisation
- Elimination of bottlenecks
MathModelica is a modelling as well as simulation software which can be used to reduce development cost and time, improve the quality of product and reduce maintenance cost. It is the most suitable platform for modelling and simulating life science and multi-engineering systems. MathModelica offers an environment for modelling, simulation, analysis, and documentation; it comes with a customizable set of Modelica component libraries. MathModelica can not only be used to optimize tests and experiments, but also to study phenomena.
Modelica can be used to analyse design changes faster and at low cost by replacing physical prototypes with real type accurate models. In addition, testing time and cost can be reduced by replacing testing benches, testing procedures and physical instruments with different model analyses. With the help of simulation more knowledge can be obtained about the system which will facilitate us to improve its quality and reduce the maintenance cost.
Simulation centres can be used to experiment the models, some of the key features of simulation centres are:
- Dynamic sensitivity analysis
- Graphical user interface
- Translating model figures into experiments
- Different parameter settings and simulation times used for simulating the model
- FFT analysis
- Tree-based selection of variables for plotting
- Pre-stored input and output signals for evaluation of model behaviour are available by default
GoldSim is the premier Monte Carlo simulation software for dynamically modelling complex systems in business, science and engineering. Monte Carlo is the term which describes a widely used class of approaches. GoldSim simulation software is used to compare and evaluate alternative designs, policies and plans in order to minimize risksand make better decisions.
The GoldSim suite has the power and flexibility to build a 'total system' model of any kind of engineered system, varying from disposal facilities, industrial facilities and mines to engines, electronic systems, vehiclesand spacecraft. Most of these applications come under three main categories as listed below:
- System Reliability and Throughput Analysis
- Risk, Failure and Vulnerability Analysis
- Cost Analysis and Warranty Claims Modelling
