Definitions of quality in the manufacturing industry

Quality is now a familiar word. However, it has a variety of interpretations and uses, and there are many dentitions. Many people say they know what is meant by quality, they typically claim I know it when I see it (i.e. by feel, taste, instinct and/or smell). In fact, quality as a concept is quite difficult for many people to understand and grasp, and much confusion and myth surround it.

In todays business world there is no single accepted de?nition of quality. However, irrespective of the context in which it is used, it is usually meant to distinguish one organization, event, product, service, process, person, result, action, or communication from another.

In the manufacturing industry it is commonly stated that quality drives productivity. Quality means providing customer with innovative products or services characteristics or attributes and defects free which provide fitness for use.

It is defined as a mission that helps in removing waste, reduce development costs, and deliver superior quality products and services that meet the initial and continuing needs and expectations of the customers by using the continuous quality improvement philosophy to achieve excellence in quality, service, and productivity. Quality manufacturing is a commitment to quality at all stages of design and production

Within an organization, to prevent confusion and ensure that everyone in each department and function is focused on the same objectives, there should be an agreed de?nition of quality. For example, Betz Dearborn Ltd. de?ne quality as: That which gives complete customer satisfaction, and Rank Xerox (UK) as Providing our customers, internal and external, with products and services that fully satisfy their negotiated requirements.
