Due to the major need of a workshop as stated above it is important that every school should have a workshop. Therefore this proposal is a response the high rise in students’ intake making the workshop unable to take all the students in Okene Technical College in Okene, Kogi state. Causing rise in population and making the current workshop incompatible for the numbers of students that has already been admitted into the School. For this reason the Workshop is to be built in a location that is not close to the class rooms so as to reduce noise to the barest minimal making other students in the class room able to take their lectures and with ease and effective understanding. The workshop should be located in a location that has visibility from afar making it easy to find from afar and it can have good ventilation and also the equipment would not be spoilt. It should have a good access road that even truck should be able to access.

WORKSHOP PLANNING

The planning of this proposal is done under the following heading

  • Purchase of machines and tools
  • Building structure
  • FUNDING: The school authority is to found the workshop project if not capable should request to the federal government to make fund it or rehabilitate it, or request from the parents to assist in the equipping of the school that would bring up their children, so as to give the student practical skills and also make the school more competitive among other schools, or ask for aid from the parent or well respected government Officials to get some of the equipment for the school.
  • SITE LOCATION: This is a most non-negligible factor to be considered when planning metalwork workshop layout. For this purpose, it should never be located in a swampy area or basement defined location to prevent most of these problems of bad tools and spoilt materials or machines. The land required is 6070 Square Meters but the available space is 4000 Square Meters and the requires space for a student is 26 Square Meters The location should be that it does not affect the classes during lectures and also it would be visible from a far site. Majorly it has a good Road accessibility for movement of materials and dropping of machines into the workshop. With ease. It should also have very good parking space for the Trucks. And it has to be close to the market for the sales of things and for people to know about it.

  • BUILDING STRUCTURE: the structure of a workshop building is usually unique in nature, since it contains other features that the structure in the school doesn’t exhibit. Some of these features include extractors which aids in removing gas or gaseous chemicals from the building. The workshop building is usually very high to allow for adequate ventilation. The building is also usually without ceiling to allow sound and noise produce in the workshop to escape out of the workshop. The position of the workshop should be such that it is visible and accessible, there floor should be a firm concrete floor such that there won’t be under ground water coming into the workshop, and also such that there would not be anything like reverberation affecting the building due to heavy equipment.

ORGANIZATION: the organization of this proposal is strategized are as follow:-

  • CONSTRUCTION: Usually in the construction of any building, the standard specification and site plan is done by an architect while the drainage system design and lighting system is done by the electrical engineer respectively. The actual block work supervised by the builders while the foreman, bricklayer and other craftmen do the actual implementation of the architectural design ensuring it’s done to specification.
  • ARRANGEMENT OF TOOLS AND MACHINES: For maximal space utilization, machines should be arranged diagonally. Tools should be arranged in a tool base according to their sizes and uses. Oil should be applied to tools when necessary. Tools should only be signed out by group leaders and return to appropriate place after usage. The Wires that are exposed should be kept well, also wires that would be long should be able to be kept in a roll able set of tool/device.
  • MANAGEMENT

Management in workshop is required due to inadequate resources that would not be sufficient enough to meet the demand(Practical) of the students all at once. Due to lack of adequate and efficient equipment and to utilize them to maximum. This Organization can therefore use the Form of:

  • Student Organization and management
  • Tool handling and maintenance
  • Duty of the workshop keeper
  • STUDENTS MANAGEMENT AND ORGANISATION: Since there are no enough machines/equipment, its advised that would be the students be divided into groups for effectiveness and adequate and complete performance of the schools. For example a set of class that entails 150 students can be divided into groups of 3 therefore sub-dividing them the 50 students into sub groups so that each of them should be able to have efficient and total practical skills in the group. In this case, the only available option is to group the students say 1 2 3. . each group can also be sub-divided into smaller units for effective management. The teacher can appoint group leader from each of the groups by so doing, all the students will participate in the workshop practices.
  • TOOLS HANDLING AND MAINTAINANCE: Tools and machines should never be operated under faulty condition, and attended to if necessary before students engage in practical work, all students are to wait for permission to operate any machine.
  • DUTY OF THE WORKSHOP KEEPER: The workshop keeper is responsible for overseeing all the activities done in the workshop. He helps the teacher to co-ordinate the activities and guides students in their practical work, he ensures that all safety rules and regulation are practiced by students, he also sees to the arrangement of tools and equipment at the end of the work.

All these would be effective if its implemented then when the students practicing it would bring to their skills that would make them very reliable and also making them very efficient in Life. And Self-reliant solving the Problem of Unemployment in the nation and to the community as a whole.
