Sex and masturbation are not the things parents can easily discuss about with their children. However, as the children become teenagers, parents may sometimes give them the talk on sex and its consequences. Sex and masturbation is not done or thought about by only teenagers, but is what most people think of and do because it is a part of life. They are essential for population growth and for pleasure as well. They are the most pleasurable activities known to man. We do them with other person or by ourselves. However, I heard an old man say to me and my friends, “Sex can wait, masturbate” because he wanted us to think of our future like finishing school and getting good jobs, rather than have sex and having kids, because it happens sometimes. His message got me thinking that sex isn't for everyone but for those who are of age and responsible for their actions in anything goes wrong. Informing young adults about the different options sex and masturbation offer is to help them make good choices that will help prevent unwanted pregnancy, diseases, and other sexual related things. Knowing what good and bad will come from sex and masturbation will benefit most people throughout their lives. If college students are well informed, they will find that learning the right choices, benefits, and knowing the disadvantages will help make them happier.

Sex

What is sex really? Sex can have many meanings; it really just depends on who defines it. Some would say it is the physical act of love. Others would say sex is the most preferred way to use when trying to reproduce or is just another word for a person's gender. Although the reasons why we have sex may be numerous, they all derive from these three experiences. The first one is, and of course, done for reproduction. This type of sex is simple, straightforward, and done by those who are already married and are having sex. Reprosex, as others may call it, is not that popular with teenagers, women who already have 10 children, and places that have population problems, like China and India. The second is a means of expressing love. Enjoying sex as an expression of love is complicated. It involves strong emotional bond that act as catalysts and accelerate most sexual responses. The love between two people is really, what makes the sex good. The third kind is by far the least appreciated by religions, moralists, and parents and yet, it is probably done the most. This is sex for fun where people do it for the physical and emotional exhilaration of feeling all the good feelings. This is recreational sex at its best. There is nothing wrong with “funsex” as Dr. David Rueben puts it. “Human beings-and for that matter, all mammals- are provided with penis or vagina and an overwhelming compulsion to use them. There is no reason why they shouldn't, and specifically in a way that will bring them the maximum pleasure.” (Rueben 45). But where exactly do we learn about sex? At home. If not from older siblings, we learn about it from our parents who give their knowledge and advice that help us make good choices. As children get older, like what Michael Pritchard says, they become more aware of their sexuality, body, mind, and because of that, it changes their attitude towards sex and makes them start to get more information on it. He also found that teenagers and young adults of this time are more informed of this matter then when he was at their age and that, they face the same choices that he did but make the easy decision.

For fun or not, there are three different kinds of sex which are categorized as penetrative sex. They are vaginal, anal, and oral sex. Vaginal sex is when a person's penis goes inside a girl's vagina. This is what most people think of as sex. It is probably the most preferred way of having sexual intercourse. The only risk about having vaginal sex is the risk of getting sexual transmitted infection and other diseases such as AIDs and HIV.

The next kind of sex is anal sex which is stimulation or penetration by a finger, sex toy, or penis to another person's anus. Although this is true, people may not believe that an estimated one third of gay couples do not include anal intercourse in their lovemaking affairs as Dr. John Dean and Dr. David Delvin explained in their article entitled “Anal Sex”. This is because of the common mistaken belief that anal sex is done by mostly gay guys. In fact, more straight couples practice anal sex because they like it and the fact that there are more straight couples than gay couples as the two doctors put it. Of all the types of sex, anal sex gives sexual partners the greatest risk of getting HIV/AIDS, E. coli, Hepatitis A, and Hepatitis C. The best way to avoid these risks is stay away from doing anal sex. Other ways to avoid these risks are use strong condoms and lubrication. Lubrication is important because it helps prevent the condom from breaking or splitting and exposing the penis or anus to these risks.

We now move on to the third kind of sex which is oral sex. Oral sex is using the mouth to stimulate a sexual partner's genital area. People wonder what the advantages of oral sex are. It is one of the best ways of getting a girl aroused and giving her an orgasm. For a man who has a hard time to getting an erection, oral sex can help stimulate a good erection by increasing the blood flow to the penis due to the suction created by the mouth. “This type of sex is increasing among teenagers because it is perceived as safer than intercourse.”(Whipple 79) Although it has its advantages, an article written by Dr. David Delvin explains the risks involved with oral sex. In the article it says that oral sex, including all the other types of sex, helps spread a virus called human papilloma virus (HPV), which causes cancer to the cervix, mouth and throat.

Sex has health benefits such as weight loss, stress reduction, increased immunity, and improves cardiovascular functioning. It also lowers blood pressure and causes the body to release endorphins, which naturally reduce the pain of a headache. In addition to all these, sex determines how well or bad a relationship can be. Sex also has it disadvantages. Things like unwanted pregnancy, getting AID's/HIV and STIs are the disadvantages of sex. They can cost people a great deal of money for medical treatment and maybe even their lives. However, there is a way to prevent these things from happening and that is practicing safe sex and/or abstain fro doing it.

Masturbation

Masturbation is sexual stimulation designed to achieve an orgasm through any means except intercourse. It is the safest kind of sex and can be done in numerous ways depending on what a person prefers. Masturbation may occur in children as early as two to three years old and as old as 70 or 80 yrs. old. It is most common in early puberty and like what was said earlier, may reappear later in life. Alfred Kinsey's studies have shown that 92% of men and 62% of women have masturbated during their lifespan. “Why do we masturbate?” The answer to this is quite simple, Masturbation is fun. Although it may not be as fun as having sex, it's the next best thing, and that is what it really is, a substitute form of gratification when sex is not likely going to happen. Dr. Wiley Blackwell says, “Men who are sexually active in their twenties to thirties are more likely to develop prostate cancer, especially if they masturbate frequently, according to a study of more than 800 men.” As you see, there are two views on masturbation, but it depends on each person's values and view on the subject that make it right or wrong. Now let's focus on the benefits of masturbation.

Masturbation is healthy for both men and women and has benefits such as, a great form of stress relief, lowers blood pressure, is a natural sleep sedative like sex, and can lead to better sex. It also strengthens people's immune system that helps men resist prostate infection and women resist yeast infections. Yvonne K. Fulbright, a reporter for Fox News wrote in her article, FOXSexpert: The Health Benefits of Masturbation, saying, “Australian researchers have reported that frequent masturbation may lower a man's risk of developing prostate cancer. A survey of men found the more frequently a man masturbates between the ages of 20 and 50, the less likely they are to get prostate cancer. In fact, those who masturbated more than five times a week were one-third less likely to develop prostate cancer.” Men get prostate cancer because they do not ejaculate over long periods of time and masturbation can help lower the risk of men getting prostate cancer. It also increases fertility and is an important factor in sperm health and motility. As you see, masturbation has many benefits that can improve people's sex life and health. “The only harmful thing about masturbation is the guilt that is drummed into children who admit masturbating, by parents who may themselves masturbate but don't admit it.” (Reuben 153). In addition, improper ways of masturbation, like using a vacuum or unwashed fruit or vegetables for example, can cause infections to the genitals which no one really wants.

Which is better?

Most people say sex is so much better than masturbation and I do not entirely disagree with them, because there are things that can only be experienced through sex and those that can be experienced through masturbation. So let us review the benefits and disadvantages to see which is better. We know that both sex and masturbation helps lower blood pressure, are good stress relievers, and can keep you feeling good and smiling all day. The only great advantage that masturbation has over sex is, it is the safest kind of sex that can prevent every sexual disease if done in the right manner. On the other hand, masturbation lacks the intimacy and contact that two people share when they are having sex, which is an advantage sex, has over masturbation, so I conclude that sex is better that masturbation when it comes pleasure but not when it comes to advantages.

Overall, sex and masturbation are what most people think of and do. Some people revolve their lives around them at some point in time not knowing what the benefits of sex and masturbation really are. Live life and enjoy sex and masturbation but remember to do them in a safe manner, meaning use protection or abstain from unsafe sex. Moreover, those who are not old enough to take care of themselves, sex is not for everyone but for those who are of age and responsible for their actions in anything goes wrong. And if you are going to ignore my advice, be sure to do what you are going to the right way to prevent the wrong things like STI's and unwanted pregnancy.
