Career is defined as "the sequence of employment-related positions, roles, activities and experiences encountered by a person" (Arnold, 1997, p: 16). In other words, "a career is a developmental process of progression" (Baruch, 2004). In order to excel and progress in a chosen occupation and have an effective career planning, an individual must be aware of his/her strengths and weaknesses. In addition to this, one must also know the skills/competences required for that particular field and must have well researched background about that occupation for instance the current market scenario for new comers and the scope for that occupation etc (Lock, 2004). There is a change apparent in the nature of the career. This can be illustrated with the application of the psychological contract. On one hand, the old contract illustrates the exchange of loyalty and skills from an employee for job security and career development from the employer. On the other hand, the new deal states the replacement of the concept of job tenure with employability and quality of life from the employer, with the expectancy of performance and flexibility from the employee. Further more, there is an agreement between the employer and the employee that organisations will provide training and skills to their employees with the expectation of them continuing to work in the same organisation with the newly acquired skills and training (Herriot, 1995).

According to Casey (1999), in modern organisation, values, attitudes, beliefs etc are important. Further more, the culture programme helps an individual to comprehend his or her work character and know his or her work values, attitude, beliefs and behaviour. This benefits the individual to progress in their career and also track an ideal job that fit their work values, beliefs etc. The work values that are most important to me when considering work are money as it is a primary reason for me, security as it is essential for me to know that my job is secured and I won't lose it some day, communication as an organisation with good communication will have a good team, thus benefiting the organisation, and lastly, work with others as this will help to build relations at work and lead to a strong team (Hopson & Scally, 1999). Managing and planning of a career are extremely crucial for an individual's professional growth and development. Together the individual and the organisation are accountable for the development of a career. However, an individual has more responsibility to craft his own career when compared to the organisation. The individual is solely responsible for his career as it is his or her desired aspiration and the organisation is merely a catalyst in the pathway to his/her success. Hence, this is the aim behind doing the Personal Development Plan for myself. The Personal Development Plan will help me recognise my strengths, weaknesses, work values, and learning styles, be of assistance to explore my chosen career, help me reflect on my skills and competences, and assist me to set objectives that will beneficial for my chosen occupation.

The career that fascinates me is that of events management. Events management involves direct and personal communication with people and also involves creativity. Event organisers are expected to work in teams and have excellent interaction or communication, organisational and time management skills as event organisers are accountable for the production of events right from conception to the completion of the event. Some examples of events are fairs and festivals, meetings, product inaugurations and promotions, fundraising and social events etc. The scope for the events industry is predicted to grow as there is estimated to be around 69,000 more managerial jobs in this sector in the year 2017 than in the year 2007. Also, as supported by recent news, GL Events reveals a 14.8% growth in revenue for this sector in 2010. My short-term career aspiration is to get experience in events. This may be voluntary or involuntary. The purpose of doing this will help me get some experience and thus give me more knowledge and exposure to fulfil my medium term aspiration that is becoming an assistant event manager/organiser. And finally, my long-term career aspiration is to become an events organiser and have an events management company of my own.


There is no standard path in order to become an event organiser, and it is not typical either to find a graduate training proposition or a job advert with easy and direct entrance unlike other jobs like banking, finance and accounting and so on. Nevertheless, some organisations do recruit graduates who match the expectations of the job with the right skills and competencies. A degree in events management acts as a competitive advantage along with good work experience in this field. In other words, good work experience is a predominant factor required when it comes to events management. There are many skills/competences to consider when coming to events management. Some of them include good organisational and time management skills, project management skills and experience; ability to work under complexity; problem-solving or analytical skills; being able to give notice to minute details, excellent communication and team working skills; flexibility and the ability to market or promote the event along with the ability to manage budgets for the events. In addition to these, an individual must also be a good team player, must be self-motivated, articulate, creative; and must have good PC skills and also presentational skills that are useful when pitching ideas to the clients. The skills that make me suitable for this sector are that of team management skills, good communication and negotiation skills, good organisational skills, time-management and marketing skills, skill of flexibility and ability to work under complex and stressful situations. All of these skills are the most important when it comes to managing an event right from planning an event to presenting the event.


A strength that would give me a competitive advantage over others would be that of working in a team. Team working is very essential when it comes to working with others and it not only helped me grow individually but also get motivated and learn new skills/qualities from other group members. University group course works have helped me to work in a team and learn skills like communication skills, researching and writing skills and also presentation skills. Also, in my hostel, Good Shepherd International School, India, I got the opportunity to work in a team and also become the leader for that team thus helping me to improve on my communication skills and leadership skills. I get along with mostly everyone I work with and listen to others opinion as well.


From the Honey and Mumford's Learning Styles Questionnaire (1996), I concluded with a weakness that is important for my area of work interest i.e. in the field of events management. The questionnaire concluded me to be in the theorist category. The questionnaire result suggested my weakness to be that of analytical thinking. In other words, concluding from experiences. The questionnaire also concluded me to be in the theorist category. It is very important to be able to conclude data, especially in the field of events, quick decision-making is important and not being able to analyse and conclude data accurately will lead me to problems.


This section will give a picture of the three different experiences I encountered and the skills/competences I learnt from them.


This experience helped me develop the skill of Time management and the ability to work under pressure. The event happened in the university and also the necessary actions to improve on this skill began from home.

It is rightly said that 'Time is money' and university course works most certainly helped me value and understand time. Due to effective use of time I have been able to submit my course works on time, which enables me to make important notes from the assignment point of view. Also, I have managed to reach for university lectures and seminars, and appointments and interviews on time. Time management has taught be not to procrastinate work as earlier I used to find it difficult to finish my work on time and I used to get stressed. But gradually I have improved my time management skills by making notes, setting alarms for lectures, seminars, appointments etc. The work pressure of three modules every semester in the university has motivated me to realise that I can cope with stress and pressure by using time efficiently.

Schuler (1979) states that when an individual uses his or her time well, less stress is generated which in turn helps the organisation to benefit with a healthy, more efficient and a satisfied employee (Schuler, 1979, p: 854). In other words, it can be implied that if a university student takes less stress and manages and utilises time effectively, the performance of the student at the university can be good.

This skill will unquestionably not only help me balance and manage my personal and professional life in the future and specially in my chosen occupation, events management, where time is money, but also help me deliver a successful event, help me reach my work place on time and help me finish my work on time.


This experience helped me develop the skill of Team management i.e. working in a team. The experience was a positive one, which happened in the university for a group presentation.

Our group had a lot of unity and we all worked as a team and helped each other wherever we could help. There was organisation in everything we did for instance, we planned and scheduled a meeting every week, wherein we would update with the progress and decide the future work allotment for all the group members. In addition to this, the leader of our group was very supportive of everyone's ideas and there were no differences with the ideas for our presentation. We all agreed and communicated well with each other in a proper manner.

According to Barrick (1998), effective team management occurs when there is good communication among the group members and also when there are high levels of conscientiousness and employee agreeableness present. My big five personality test shows that my conscientiousness and agreeableness result is satisfactory and good for my career option i.e. events management as the job needs one to be organised and a good team player. This skill will help me become a good team player, which will help me excel in my field.


This experience has taught me the skill of self-motivation or how to build up my self-esteem. This happened at when I was 13 years old. I was de-motivated by my friends, who passed comments on me for not being able to speak English well. English is my second language. I was then encouraged by my mother to start reading newspapers and books and start writing essays and reports in English. And till this date, learning English is an ongoing process. I still encourage myself and try not to get affected by other people's comments and take criticisms well.

According to Maslow (1954), there are certain needs like physiological (air, water, food etc), safety (job security, insurance etc), social (friendship, giving and receiving love etc), esteem (self- respect, accomplishment, self-esteem etc) and self-actualisation (truth, justice etc) that need to be satisfied before one can act selflessly. So as long as these needs are fulfilled, an individual stays motivated.

I have learnt that it is my responsibility to build up my self- esteem and not get affected by comments. If a person is self- motivated, they are able to show good results in their work. I have also learnt to think positively and accept my strengths and weaknesses and also work on my weaknesses. This helps me build my confidence.

Being self-motivated and helping myself build on my own self- esteem will help me deliver better performance at work. Events management is an occupation wherein one needs to be confident and confidence can come only when a person is self- motivated from within.
