When students use the reader-response approach in literature, it takes them to a different level of thinking. They have the opportunity to think and express themselves in regards on what they read. They can also explore issues in their lives and culture in which they develop their own understandings on the selected readings. Sometimes important things are not learned only in formal teaching manner, but also with experience. That is why the students are able to learn to express themselves better if it is a topic in which they can relate to or have experienced before. Students need to be helped to have personal satisfaction and meaningful transactions with literature. They can develop the habit of turning to literature for the pleasure and insights it can offer. Literature must match students' needs, experience and maturity levels and they should be provided activities they can participate and make them feel comfortable.

Discuss the relationship between the reading and writing processes. What benefits do you see for your students?
Students find the connection between reading and writing very helpful while they connect their ideas expressed in what they read. Students create a commitment towards writings, but if the reading selection was chose for them, they might find it difficult to be able to express themselves. Teachers often use the reader-response approach because it provides young adult students the introduction to universal themes that interact with their own goals, values and morals in which they can compare and contrast experiences with others. Through reading and writing, language is used for communications and interactive writing can promote cooperation between students and build confidence in writing. Sometimes writers are influenced with what they read. This can also be the situation in students, in which they imitate the writing style of others. Along the way, they can keep experimenting on their writing, and change it according to what they feel and see. Students can benefit a lot from reading because that is when they can get more knowledge of the language and put it in practice in their every day. Not only will they learn from what they read, but they will also learn to express themselves better with the help of the passages and lessons learned of what they read.

How do you determine the quality of a book? Explain what a book has to have or do to be a quality book for use in your classroom.
The first aspect to consider in a book is how the plot of the book can engage students in reading. The plot of the book has to be a topic in which students will be drawn to it, making their attention sustained throughout the whole book. Most young adults might be interested in reading novels that might be realistic and have conflicts in which the students can find themselves and can realistically decide the solution to the conflict. In addition, the characters of the book must be someone who students can identify themselves with. Characters need to be round for them to know fully about them and appreciate the levels of growth that take place. Sometimes students don't necessarily like certain types of setting like dull historic times because they feel too distanced to what is going on. However, sometimes this type of setting can be what makes the literature work. One of the most important aspects that determine the quality of the book is the themes presented. For the theme or themes to be successfully reached, they must be universal, in which the student could learn about values and human conditions. Other aspects to look at in a book are the point of view, which can help a lot in the students' understanding of the characters and situations. If the style it is written can be easily understood, students might be able to go beyond to just physical characteristics and the surroundings. The imagery in a book is also very helpful to students because they can visualize everything that is going on.

Write an entry at least a page long that shows your understanding of the periods we call preadolescence and adolescence.
The developmental process in young adults changes from infancy to adulthood, in which there are transitional periods between these ages. Preadolescents have a different view from when they were younger, in which they start to develop more realistic sense, self identity and independence. They are able to think logically and view human relationships or situations another way. However, their thinking revolves more in direct and concrete objects rather than anything abstract. Preadolescence tends to have situations in terms of how the preadolescent can perceive the world in their own way, as opposed to what it really is. In the adolescence, the transition of physical and mental human development takes place. Adolescents in this stage are able to apply logical operations and have a wider perspective on situations. They are able to reason about abstract propositions, objects or concepts that they may not have experienced before. Their cognitive, emotional and physical changes can be a conflict or a positive personal development. It is the stage in which the struggle more to find who they are and what they want while dealing with society as well.

Why is it important for you to connect language study with literature in your classes?
Students often do not enjoy the excitement that can come from a study of various linguistic topics. They do not necessarily know how language works fully, and they expect it to be dull when they use it in the classroom. Students must have the background knowledge on the effective use of dialects and understand how authors use social and geographical dialects to achieve their effect on the writing of their work. They have to be introduced to how authors make their writing interesting with the way the use the language. Sometimes establishing books that have vibrant and special use of language can help the students create a mental image of the characters and the plot. Authors often use vocabulary, idioms, syntax and general style of writing to reflect the culture and society about which they are writing. The language study is important when it comes to literature because it will help the students be aware of words that have been borrowed from other languages and, with their background knowledge of the different style of writing, they can understand much more the text they are presented with.

Based on what you have read in this chapter about teaching the classics, present your views on why you will or will not teach them.
Students do not like to read the classics because of the lack of connection between them and the literature. According to a lot of studies, students do not even have the time to read for fun because they are always busy doing work for literature works they do not enjoy or want to read. Sometimes teachers feel like they should introduce the classics on the classroom because they are supposed to, but they do not realize that the students are the ones affected by this. They do not feel like reading something that will not relate to them. The majority of classics contain a lot of historic language, which sometimes students are not able to comprehend like they need to.
As a teacher, I definitely have the desire to introduce diverse literature to my students, but I have to focus on how they are going to react to it. Classics, I think, are still important because they can introduce the students to how a good piece of literature can be. Classic writers knew how to write well and effectively, which will give the student to understand how their pieces could continue to instill in the future. Young adult literature is still a good device for students to be interested in what they read, and I think they should have the opportunity to experience books that they can feel familiar with and can integrate their own situations in the process of reading.

What do you think about current technology in the classroom? What are the advantages and/or disadvantages of these technologies?
Technology is often changing depending of the needs of the society nowadays. Sometimes the technology creations are not entirely necessarily, but they do help in the education in the classrooms of today. As technology changes, society does too and we see students been introduce to most of this which leads them to expect more entertainment in the classrooms. Young adults are in the stage of having a good time and that is always present in the classroom. Teachers must find different strategies and techniques to have students more engaged in what they are learning. Here technology comes as a big advantage because many activities can be done in the classroom with technology in which can enrich students' development in their thinking and critical thinking skills. However, the advantages of technology only go so far. Students tend to forget the importance of the lessons or education in general when they are introduced to technology too frequently. They become lazy students and are often distracted on their school works. Technology makes things easier and students take advantage of that as a source for their education. Teachers must find a balance in the use of technology and the use of old school sources in their classroom.

What is your understanding of why censors try to remove books from classrooms and libraries?
Censors are known to make criticisms and not want a particular piece of literature to be taught in the classroom; others are special-interest groups that have taken stands against having particular literature taught in the classrooms. Some argue that the teachers are censors when they select materials that are going to be used; however, they should be the ones to make the decisions on what materials will be ordered by school districts and what books students will read. The largest group of censors, though, is composed of parents. They may have many reasons to not want their children to read a certain literature depending on their beliefs and feelings towards certain topics. A lot of times, parents do not want a book to be introduced in the classroom because of the difference in religion belief or maybe they feel the book is too graphic for their children. The Chocolate War received criticism by parents because it had negative religious overtones, sexual implications and inappropriate language. Parents find topics as violence, explicit context or sex among high-school aged teenagers are considered to be offensive and wrong for their children. Some of the categories in which books receive objections are: sex, politics, war and peace, religion, sociology and race, language, drugs and inappropriate adolescent behavior. Most of these criticisms have to do with the parents' lack of objectivity and understanding in literature. Sometimes students need to be introduced to a realistic world which they can understand, especially if their cultural society has to do with the topic. Teachers do have to know how to balance how he/she teachers in the classroom, and also maintain a communication with the parents without disrespecting their beliefs.

Why We Must Read Young Adult Books that deal with Sexual Content
Sometimes, as teachers, we are not sure about how good our reading selections are when we choose books for our students, especially when they are books that contain sexual content. There are many reasons people self censor the books and some of them are because of personal beliefs and how the topic of the book may impact in their lives. Young adults have different comfort levels and interests in books, and while some students might prefer hopeful stories than give them comfort, there might be others who prefer sad stories with no hope. Teachers should be aware of these types of books, especially when they tend to be controversial. On the other hand, teachers cannot ignore strong topics like rape because that would be ignorant on their behalf. Some books do not necessarily talk about rape, but about the aftermath and they show how the victim struggles throughout their lives. There are varieties of books which deal with different situations but with the same topic like this one. While there are books that could be recommended to not be taught in a classroom, the topic should not be ignored either because students could see the consequences of bad decisions when it comes to sex. Students need to be aware of how wrong choices can affect their lives, their surroundings and their relationship with the society. Teachers must know about these books in order for them to decide if they should be taught in their classrooms and how should they be taught.

Finding an Authentic Voice in Writing for Young Adults
The key to an attractive story is to create characters that can sound and act realistically for a young adult to read. It is easier for young adults to identify how the voice in a story sounds because they are more familiar with the style of language they are used. They will be able to recognize how realistic a voice and sound, or on the contrary, how forced. Some young adults books have a humorous voice or they can be sarcastic and snarky. However, it all depends in the tone and context of the story for it to be successful in young adult literature. Students may read a book and rewrite parts of the story in different points of view in which they can compare and contrast the voice in each point of view. First person point of view is the most common in young adult books which can help young adults reflect on their own place in society. They give the most intimate feeling and students can feel familiar to it. Students can also try to change the voice of the character in the different points of view for them to analyze which voice could be the most genuine for the story. Characters have singular personalities and voices, each reflecting on their lives, and when students practice their writing frequently, they could be able to find a special personality and make that personality the identity of the character.
