There is an enormous difference between the upbringings of two flowers when one of them is kept in an open environment, under the sunlight and the other is nourished inside the room. If we assume and compare the two flowers, the first flower will be more beautiful and full-fledged. Likewise the student who is being given full opportunity for exploration and discovery will be more confident, intellectually groomed and knowledgeable as compare to the student who is sitting in the class and listening to the teachers for 6 hours with half an hour break. Traditional way of teaching is unable to cater the several learning styles of students, emphasis is on one way communication and it mainly hinders student's learning.
We all are different from one another. Similarly, we all have different learning styles. Some children learn better by pictorial approach, others will learn better with auditory ways, and still others learn well with a hands-on technique. Howard Gardner proposed seven diverse ways to demonstrate intellectual ability known as Multiple Intelligences. Students could have visual/spatial intelligence, musical/rhythmic intelligence, intra personal intelligence, interpersonal intelligence, verbal/linguistic intelligence, logical/mathematical intelligence and bodily/kinesthetic intelligence. Students with verbal/linguistic intelligence like to explain, persuade and comprehend the content. The main characteristics of the students with logical/mathematical intelligence are analyzing, reasoning, rationalizing and problem solving. Individuals with musical intelligence learn through sound, beat, rhythm, tempo and musical metaphor. People with visual/spatial intelligence learn via visualizing an object. The students with bodily/kinesthetic intelligence develop fine and gross motor skills and experiences strong body-mind connection. Hence, they learn better with a hands-on approach. Individuals with interpersonal intelligence work well with diverse group of people and have good communication skills. Main characteristics of intra personal intelligence is that, the individuals can analyze their own wants and need strongly. They are good at self-planning, goal setting and self-reflecting. Variety of learning styles helps students to learn more effectively but traditional teaching mainly focuses on the linguistic and logical intelligence of the students and many other students who have other kinds of intelligence are being rewarded with poor results and failures at the end of the year.
Traditional teaching usually depends on the lecture which leads to one way communication of ready-made lectures. Sometimes pupils have no chance to seek answer of their query or offer comments during the class therefore, it's difficult to assess that either pupil learned or not. In lectures students are not the active participant of the learning therefore, it leads to boredom apparently. The student while attending the lecture listens the whole content but rarely absorbs it. As a result, mediocrity and shallow learning becomes the fate of the student. Pupils who went through monotonous way of teaching often lose their motivation and interest in the subject being taught. Often, the focus of traditional teaching is on rote learning. It is about memorizing and regurgitating the content without context or comprehension. Priority of the pupil is not to understand the content but to learn it by heart in order to, achieve good grades. This attitude makes them result oriented. It blocks the student's way towards innovation and creativity.
Traditional teaching methodology hinders students learning. As, it is a teacher being controller of the learning, it's not infrequent for students to become bored or frustrated. At last, they become passive learners. Their eyes remain open but actually, they do not listen to the content or either display behavior problems in classroom and tagged as difficult learners by the teachers. Students are made to sit on the same chairs and desk for long hours and study alone hence they are not able to carry out practical work in relation to what they have learnt hence, it makes them unable to relate classroom ideas to the real world. When students are allowed to work in group, they participate actively with their peers and think for new ideas but unfortunately traditional way of teaching doesn't allow it. Students learn their utmost when all of their senses are involved in learning. They develop their skills, knowledge and attitude on the basis of learning made with the help of senses. Traditional teaching modes provide least opportunity for the usage of all senses. Teachers scarcely provide any diverse approaches to learn in case of traditional teaching. Therefore, students are often unable to develop skills like analytical, problem solving and critical thinking.
Results indicate that traditional lecture style teaching is associated with significantly higher student achievement. However, the followers of traditional teaching forget that it promotes competitive learning. In which only one individual wins and others must fail. In such atmosphere, winning becomes the focus of individuals. Students focus is diverted more towards marks and grads rather than learning which increases the feeling of jealousy, selfishness and aggression in students. In order to win students may also choose the unfair means of winning like cheating. In schools, our emphasis should be on providing learning escalating environment.
If every plant is being nourished proficiently than only it will be able to provide fruits to our society in future. In a nutshell, it is important to plan the classes which can provide diverse platforms of students to learn. Two way communication must be increased and strategies should be plan in order to enhance student centered learning.
