Have you ever wondered the importance, difficulty, and pressure that a teacher experiences everyday in order to successfully enhance the knowledge of a classroom of students? Teachers have to carry the ample responsibility of molding the minds of young children daily. The road to becoming a teacher expands, involving multiple years of education, people skills, and an ambition to change lives. When combining these qualities with experience and admirable techniques they can form the foundation for a productive and life-altering educator. Pursuing a career in childhood education may appear effortless, however it can be extremely challenging.

Teachers have been around since the 1800's and as society grows the art of teaching cultivates. Education is the process of receiving or giving systematic instruction, especially at a school or university (Oxford American Dictionary, 2010, p.553). A teacher is a person who teaches, especially in a school (Oxford American Dictionary, 2010, p.1780). Teaching, over time has become an increasingly difficult career to pursue. Teaching is an art where you show or explain to someone how to do something (Oxford American Dictionary, 2010, p.1780). Teaching, over time has become an increasingly difficult career to pursue. Diane Ravitch (2002) said, “In the first half of the nineteenth century, the requirements for entry into teaching were modest: new teachers had to persuade a local school board of their moral character, and in some districts, pass a test of their general knowledge”. Later on she added that, “Certification became, increasingly, dependent on taking courses in pedagogy and in passing tests of pedagogical theory.” Eleanor Chute (2007) explained her view that, “Teaching is arguably the most important ingredient in education at any grade level and in any type of school.” The role of the teacher is to teach kids skills and tasks so they can grow up and get a rewarding job and make wise daily life decisions. As a teacher, your job is to prepare your students for the real world and guide them towards their possible career path. A teacher must be dedicated, inspiring, intelligent, and patient; and I believe that those are all qualities that I posses.

When preparing for your career a lot of schooling and education is required in order to create the path of earning the successful career of a teacher. According to Amanda Kirk(2009), "Teachers in academic subjects often have at least an undergraduate degree in education and, at a secondary school level, a specialization in one subject such as math, English, or history." Not having at least an undergraduate degree would mean you're not properly qualified to teach students. "To obtain a teachers license you must have a bachelor's degree, pass a state test (which varies considerably in difficulty from state to state), and complete state-approved and mandated education courses" (Amanda Kirk, 2009, p.4). A lot of studying is required to pass these advanced courses and tests. When anticipating becoming a teacher you require many necessary educational skills and qualifications.According to Amanda Kirk these four skill sets can be broken up into percentages, "Communication Skills: to teach students at varying ability levels simultaneously (20%)", "Organizational Skills: to plan lessons and keep records for multiple classes (20%)", "Caring: about your students and their educational development (30%)", and "Ability to Manage Stress: since dealing with children, parents, administrators, and regulations makes teaching a stressful career (30%)." It may be helpful to take part in summer jobs, such as, substituting or teaching summer school. This would prepare you for what you will be dealing with once you get your own class.

When entering the career world you must acquire a proper education in the teaching field. You will require many different aspects in order to land a respectable job. According to the U.S. Department of Labor (2009), “Entry level is when you teach elementary school students academic, social, and motor skills in public or private schools. You must prepare course objectives and outline for course of study following curriculumguidelines or requirements of state and school. Using Lectures, demonstrates, and audiovisual teaching aids to present subject matter to class are some new effective ways to teach.” It is critical to maintain order inside and outside of the classroom. The occupational safety and Health Administration guarantees safe working conditions; and the American Federation of Teachers is a national teacher's union that strives to advance their salaries and working conditions. This will help to access the student's achievements. Most teachers work the regular ten month school year, which is over fourty hours a week (including work performed outside the classroom). In order to keep everyone's sanity, schools (just like any other job) receive vacation time. The people that work a ten month school year receive a two month summer vacation. Teachers in districts with a regular (full) schedule typically work about two months, then vacation for a week, and have a midwinter break for five weeks. There are multiple variations for a teacher's salary range. According to the American Federation of Teachers, beginning teachers with a bachelor's degree earned an average of $33,227. Median annual wages of kindergarten, elementary, middle, and secondary school teachers ranged from $47,100 to $51,180. The lowest ten percent earned started at $30,970 and went up to $34,280. The top ten percent earned ranged from $75,190 to $80,970. Teaching is a profession where it is impossible to avoid physical and emotional stress. At some point teachers will have to cope with disobedient children and learn how to control violence in their school and classroom. Teachers may experience stress when dealing with large classes, a lot of classes, heavy workloads, grading, etc.. Teachers can be evaluated by anyone of a higher rank, such as, the assistant principle of a subject area, the assistant principle of the grade, or the principle.

Your potential is what sets you apart from the rest; some teachers don't just stopin the classroom, many move on to try and better their career. There is an abundance of different disadvantages to being an educator. ”Teachers may be frustrated when dealing with unmotivated or disrespectful students” (Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2005-2011). When children just don't want to try, or act out in class, it's important to know how to deal with them and persuade their mindset to a positive one.Another major issue would be, “No matter how good teaching training for teachers is , it cannot be expected to prepare teachers for all the challenges they will face throughout their career” (U.S. Department of Labor, 2009). Along with your disadvantages are always your positive aspects and advantages to the situations. “Most teachers work a traditional 10-month school year and 2 month paid vacation during the summer” (U.S. Department of Labor, 2009). Getting paid for two months without work is one of the benefits of being a teacher. It is the greatest feeling, “Seeing students develop new skills and gain an appreciation of knowledge and learning can be rewarding” (U.S. Department of Labor, 2009). It will bring a teacher nothing but joy to learn that the kid finally understands and you're the reason for their accomplishment. For the future outlook,”Schools in the United States and Canada hire new teachers each year. Some opportunities occur because experienced teachers retire or leave to pursue other career paths” (The World Book Encyclopedia, 2011, p. 68). When older people leave the field of teaching, it leaves more room for the fresh young minds to take over. When planning for your future, you must always plan for a possible career path. When teaching all different grade levels (under the age of high school) requires a variety of skills and aptitudes. You must acquire a talent for working with children; organizational, administrative, and record keeping abilities; research and communication skills; the power to influence, motivate, and train others; patience; and creativity. Everyone wants the top job on the ladder, the best of the best. Many school districts provide in-service training to help experience teachers improve their teaching. Master of education programs typically prepare their recipients to be elementary secondary or special education teachersand can offer courses in teaching methods, curriculum and instruction, classroom management and mathematics. In order to achieve these highly respected top jobs, you must have the proper training and qualifications. These programs typically offer practical experience and internship. Other possible areas of focus include educational psychology education administration and policy, curriculum design and so on.

Pursuing a career in education may appear simple, but is more arduous than meets the eye. The most substantial aspect to being a successful teacher is having the desire to impact the lives of your students. “Some teachers teach because they want to help children learn and grow and would like to make a contribution to society. Others have an intellectual fascination with a certain subject (such as math or history), have been inspired by one of their own teachers, or feel they have a sense of commitment to their country (Recruit).” This is a very suitable job for me because I have that drive and want to better the student's lives and help develop their brains and intelligence. In order to attain this goal of becoming an educator you must love what you do and have the child's best interest at heart.
