National Philosophy of Education combines the goals, policies and educational practices to form a consistent, clear and logical entity. FPK aims to rationally clarifyÂ the currentÂ educational practices as well as facilitate the actions and trends ofÂ education in the future. FPK consists of several elements to produce individuals who are intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, and physically balanced and harmonic.
According to National Philosophy of Education, "Education in Malaysia is an on-going effort towards further developing the potential of individuals in a holistic and integrated manner, so as to produce individuals who are intellectually, spiritually, emotionally and physically balanced and harmonious, based on a firm belief in and devotion to God. Such an effort is designed to produce Malaysian citizens who are knowledgeable and competent, who possess high moral standards, and who are responsible and capable of achieving high level of personal well-being as well as being able to contribute to the harmony and betterment of the family, the society and the nation at large."
The first element of FPK isÂ education as an on-going effort. Education is a process ofÂ acquiringÂ and transferring of knowledge, skills and noble values. The acquisition and transfer processes are on-goingÂ startingÂ from an early age till death. Early education is important to shape the personality of young children from the age of 1 to 6 years. The personality thus formed will go on developing throughout the schooling years. Upon completion of schooling, the individual continues to enhance his knowledge, skills and character. For instance, after SPMÂ examination, while waiting for the result, the candidates can seek knowledge by attendÂ photography classesÂ orÂ computer classesÂ based on their interests. Continuous education will assist the individual to adapt to various types of changes.
The second element of FPK isÂ development of individual potentials. Every individual has been blessed by God with hidden talents, potentials and abilities. Therefore, talents, potentials and abilities should be tapped, nurtured, developed and enhanced through social interaction with others and the environment. For example, a student who does not like to study sat for an exam. The result went out and to her surprise, she is among the highest. She did not realize her intelligence before thus, education offers herÂ opportunitiesÂ to develop her talents, potential and abilities.
The third element of FPK isÂ belief in and obedience to God. One must admit the existence of God and accept Him as the Creator of mankind and the universe. He must be aware that God determines nature's laws and phenomena. He should also be aware that every individual is fully responsible for his deeds and actions. For instance, Muslims people believe the existence of 'syurga' and 'neraka'. In order to get goodÂ rewardÂ in life hereafter, one must practice all the teachings of the faith professed.
The fourth element of FPK isÂ knowledgeable Malaysian citizens. It means that all Malaysian citizens must haveÂ loveÂ for knowledge. In order to achieve it, they must strive to foster knowledge andÂ readingÂ culture. They can go to Borders, MPH or POPULAR bookstore to read anyÂ readingÂ materials regardless of its contents as long as they areÂ reading. Ultimately, they will become a broad and open-minded person.
All in all, it isÂ crystal clearÂ that if each and everyone in the education fraternity uphold the FPK in carrying out their tasks and responsibilities, inevitably, our educational goal will become reality and not only just a dream.
System of Education in Malaysia (KLSR, KBSR,KSSR)
Primary education systems in Malaysia have been changing from stage to stage in order to give students the best education. The process had been gone from KLSR, KBSR to KSSR, which carrying different aims of education.
Primary School Old Curriculum (KLSR) was implemented since 1963 to 1975. Bahasa Malaysia as the main medium of instruction in every school, including national-type of Chinese and Tamil school. Implementation of KLSR was aim to strengthen the national education system, foster social cohesion, cultural, political and educational, improved the standard of education throughout the country as well as implement the democratization of education, regardless of race, belief or religion. However, the implementation of KLSR did not last longer due to its weaknesses such as repetition of the syllabus content. Other than this, the teaching materials using in classroom were only textbooks, which bored the students. It was more to academic and neglected the building of good personalities of students.
Primary School Integrated Curriculum (KBSR) was fully enforced in all primary schools in 1983. The aim of KBSR was to ensure the holistic development of pupils, which encompasses aspects including intellectual, spiritual, physical, emotional and social which known as "JERIS". In 1988, KBSR previously known as New Primary School Curriculum was changed to Primary School Integrated Curriculum due to the review of the primary school curriculum. However, the content were remain unchanged. Among the main objectives of KBSR, students were required to master the national language of Malaysia which is Bahasa Malaysia. Moreover, KBSR also emphasized on the mastery of basic skills of 3R, which are reading, writing and arithmetic. Besides that, four principles were found in KBSR which are integrated approach, holistic individual development, life-long learning and one education for all.
In 2011, KBSR were replaced by Primary School Standard Curriculum (KSSR). The aim of implementing KSSR is to make the subject of English more interesting to students. It also covered the areas of knowledge, skills and values. Another aim of KSSR is to restructure and improve the current curriculum to ensure that students have the enough knowledge, skills and values to face the challenges in the 21st century. The implementation of KSSR is different from KBSR. It emphasized the development of basic language skills, 4R which are speaking, listening, reading and writing. Besides, KSSR was more focusing on critical thinking skills, creative thinking skills and reasoning. Additionally, eight principles are consisted in KSSR, namely forms, curriculum organization, time allocation, pedagogy, content, material, organization and assessment.
Role of teacher
A teacher is not only an individual who provides knowledge yet an educator to students. Teacher is the first light of leading students from the beginning through the hardest. Teacher should educate the students mentally and emotionally by installing good values on them, as a teacher is playing vital role for them. For students who would constantly meet with bumps on their road towards success, teacher would be their problem solver, corrector, great inspirer, motivator, leader, listener, counsellor, and advisor as well. A teacher is the one who preparing young generation to their future path.
Instead of teaching according to textbooks and turning the students into dead fishes, teacher has the responsibility on grabbing students' attention and making the learning progress interesting in class, avoiding of bored the students. Moreover, a teacher will be the role model who shapes students gradually. Therefore, a great teacher will lead his students to a brighter path.
SJK (C) Pei Yang
Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (C) Pei Yang is located at Bt 1 1/2, Jln Bakri 84000, Muar, Johor, Malaysia. 99% of students in Pei Yang are Chinese. Facilities such as badminton court, ping pong court, basket ball court and music room are well prepared in the school. Students have their options in choosing one activity for their curriculum every Wednesday. Moreover, Pei Yang School has their own museum which keeping the history of Muar and the school from the beginning until now. Inside the museum, students will get the chance to learn for Chinese culture. Demonstrations such as making Chinese tea and shaping ceramics carry out every year for the students to learn more of Chinese culture. Music lessons for Chinese traditional music instrument such as Erhu is also available in the school.Additionally, Pei Yang School is emphasizing healthy diet in school. Therefore, junk food are banning in school. The canteen sets the meals with meat, vegetables and tau fu for students every day. Processed food such as nuggets, hotdogs, and fried chicken are not available in their menu as well. The principal of Pei Yang School would like to ensure the students know the concept of healthy lifestyle and make sure that students are not consuming unhealthy food in school as she takes this as a part of her responsibility to keep them well.
There are several of activities carried out in Pei Yang School. Pei Yang School will hold their sports day annually at Stadium Muar, combining with four other schools, which are SJK (C) CHI SIN, SJK (C) SING HWA, SJK (C) SOON CHENG and SJK(C) PEI CHAI.
All students will divide into four houses, which are Red House, Yellow House, Green House and Blue house. This would help in developing their social development as students will get to interact with each other and get to know more friends. Parents are welcome to join the event and watch their children performed.
The aim of sports day is to make sure the students are not only outstanding in academic but also in curriculum. The expenses of sports day is normally sponsor by PTA of each school and most of the expenses are going to the trophy, food, drinks and small gifts of parents and students.
By taking part on sports day, students would be able to learn with positive thinking, teamwork, and the spirit of never give up as well. Sports events such as long jump, high jump, one hundred meters race, four hundred meters race and so-on will be carried out on sports day and students will get to know their physical status.
Through this activity, students would get the feeling of togetherness and unity as the emotional element of FPK.
Other than that, competitions such as storytelling competition, singing competition, and drawing competition will carry in school.
The objectives of conducting competitions in school are to discover students hidden talent and give them chances in showing their talent.
Competitions such as storytelling and singing competition will help to increase their confidence of performing in front people. Teachers will guide students who are chosen for competition. Practices will taking place in school during recess time. For those outstanding performers, prizes will given to them during their weekly assembly.
This would help in developing individual potentials as the element of FPK. Since individual has been blessed by God with hidden talent, potentials and abilities. They should be tapped, nurtured, developed and enhanced. Education should offer the individual opportunities to develop one's talents, potentials and abilities.
On the other hand, school authority will carry out activity such as camping annually. They are usually bringing the students to campsite nearby which is campsite Gunung Ledang, Tangkak. It takes half an hour for the journey to campsite from school.
The objectives of conducting this activity are giving chances for students to learn for social skills such as getting along well with teammates, managing emotions in relationship, being able to persuade and lead others. Communication, cooperation and resolving conflict are important in this activity. Students should being able to manage distressing moods well and control impulses. It is important for students in being motivated and remaining hopeful and optimistic when they have to setbacks in working towards goals. They have to learn for empathy in order to understand situation, act appropriately and make decisions wisely after thinking twice.
Students have to set up tents on their own after demonstration of teachers and working with each other in completing their task. Cooking their own meals is required in camping. Students would learn for self-reliance and independence.
Through this activity, students will aware that every task and responsibility is a trust that has to be well executed as the element of FPK. They will learn how to work with others.
Go green campaign
School authority will conduct go green campaign for students every year. Speaker from WWF will be invited to give students a talk on concerning our environment.
The aim of conducting a go green campaign for students is to highlight their awareness on protecting our mother earth as global warming is taking place gradually in nowadays.
Several related video clips will play in hall, about the real situation of the earth and situation in wildlife. By raising their awareness of protecting our earth, students probably would change to be a better person in protecting environment. For instance, saving water, saving paper, avoiding using plastic bags and reducing the usage of air-conditioner in home.
Apart from that, tree-planting programme will carry out in school compound. The principal of Pei Yang will take the job of conducting the ceremony. Activity such as planting trees in school aims to provide better learning environment for students. At the same time, set as example for students and give them a sense of responsibility on protecting environment.
Through this activity, students will possess good character and upholds moral values as the spiritual element of FPK. They will get to know that we should be thankful and appreciate for everything, as it is all God's gift for us.
Activity such as festival celebrations will also be conduct in school for students during the festivals in order to learn about the culture of different races and the meaning behind every festival.
Parents will be inviting to every celebration, as this would tighten the relationship between teachers, students and parents. Additionally, it gives the chance for parents to know more about activities conducting in school, watch how their children taking part in activities and how the school operating. The expenses of those celebrations will afford by PTA and parents no need to fork out extra of their fortune for any activities or event in school.
Festival celebration such as Chinese New Year, students are allowed to wear their casual clothes to school and the school compound will be decorated by teachers will red lanterns. Culture related competitions such as storytelling competition, singing competition, and calligraphy competition will carry out on that day and small gifts will give to all participants. Apart from that, students will receive mandarin and sweets from PTA (parents and teachers association) as a New Year blessing for them. Not only that, free calligraphy with good meaning words will give away on that day as well. What is the most interesting part is the God of Fortune will shown up on that day as one of the teachers will playing the role to give away the 'good luck angpao' for students as a blessing for them as well.
Through this activity, students will get to know different cultures in Malaysia and they would probably love for country as the element of FPK.
Simple Science experiments
Since there are many ways of learning, simple Science experiments are carried out in class. Students will be given a task and they have to follow the instructions from teacher. Lastly, they have to carry out the experiments independently by repeating the steps after demonstration.
Simple experiments such as putting the red beans on wet cotton and making observation of their growth after few days. A short report is required for each experiment. Students will learn more through experiment as they are witnesses of the progress of experiments.
The aim of simple experiment as that is to conduct a fun-filled learning process for students. From that, students would not stress of learning yet they feeling interested.
Students will always strive to acquire and develop knowledge as what mentioned in the elements of FPK which posses creative, critical and reflective thinking skills. So that, students are willing to share knowledge with others and environment.
For ensuring students are mentally healthy, Pei Yang School nurtures students with good moral values by preparing them with religious education on every Wednesday.
Sisters from church and volunteers from Tze Chi will come to the school for giving them a talk or storytelling for related religious. Volunteers from Tze Chi named 'Great Love Mummy' will bring along video clips and storybooks for giving away to students, whereas Sisters would bring along their bible-storybooks for students.
The principal of Pei Yang School believes that the moral values, which implant in students, would help in their personal growth by building good personalities and fixing their mindset. Through the religious education, students will also learn for maintaining the stability of their emotional and dealing with stress and problems.
This would help in applying the element of FPK which is balanced and harmonic being. Students will get to know the importance of having good personalities and belief in God.
Mini lesson in the classroom will conduct activity such as group discussions in certain languages classes, which would help in upgrading the confidence of students in using the specific language.
Students will divide into groups and given a task such as completing story. This would help them in improving their writing skills and speaking skills. However, it works up their creativity.
Other than this, students would learn how to work together with their friends and contribute their ideas. This will give chances for students to gain the ability to use language to accomplish certain goals and effectively in expressing themselves. It gives them courage in speaking out in front of others as well. Constructing sentence will help them a lot in writing an essay. Besides, teacher will conduct educational games for students in class. For instance, quiz, bubble bees and puzzle. Small prizes will give away by teacher, as small rewards for who are outstanding. Teacher takes it as motivation for students to strive harder and step higher. Other than this, Pei Yang School has a reading corner for students and there will be a teacher standing by for answering questions from students. Some students will gather there while waiting for their parents to fetch them.
This would help in applying the element of FPK, which is intellectual element in possessing the three basic skills in students: reading, writing and arithmetic.
Video watching session
On the other hand, watching educational videos is considered as one of the teaching methods in Pei Yang School, which would help in improving their listening skill and making learning progress interesting for them.
Teachers who teach in English will prepare some video clips for their students in class. Students get to interact with each other by watching English short stories and singing the English songs together. Learning in relaxing way is the main objective of Pei Yang School to students.
Teachers are applying the elements of FPK in students by exposing students to ICT teaching medium. This would actually preparing them for future.
Slow learner classes
As there are getting common that some of the slow learner students find excuses for not going to school, Pei Yang School decided to make a change in getting rid from this situation.
For slow learners, the school has providing them another learning environment and their homework is easier according to their pace. Teachers would first evaluate level of children's development and set the task accordingly level.
To avoiding them from looking down by others, all classes in school are not classified by using A1, A2, A3 accoding to their result yet each class named with flowers. Students will never know who is smarter and who is slower. Class activity such as puzzle, spelling bees, police and thief will carry out for slow learner to learn for new things at a comfort pace. Teacher will play as their great motivator by giving compliments, encouraging them, and rewarding them with small gifts, and as well.
To avoid students afraid of examination, stressed, or depressed after comparing their results with others, teachers even keep the results of students as a secret from parents as well. The results will only know by students personally. The principal of Pei Yang School hopes that students could follow their own learning progress at their own pace. Teachers will set a target for students to improve themselves from time to time. This sort of concept is brought back from Taiwan by the principal of Pei Yang School. Some parents has complained as the school is not publishing the ranking of results, however the action is taking for avoiding parents to stress their children for competing with others.
School is a place, which prepares the young generation for future and a place where they gain knowledge and seek for experiences. As a medium of providing knowledge and educating young generation, teachers and school should put in their effort in providing the best element for students. Pei Yang School has constantly tried their best in producing individuals who spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, and physically balanced and harmonic. However, it takes two to clap. Students should put in their effort as well. They should be thankful and appreciate the effort of every educator. In recent years, Pei Yang School has chosen as the school of 'Great Love' in Muar. Their main concept is to provide students fun-filled and stress-free learning progress and environment. Good results of their students has proven how wise is their principal in taking decisions.
