Essay: Time management

what is time management?

Time management is the art of arranging, organizing and scheduling, one's time for the purpose of generating more effective work and productivity. There are an abundance of books, classes, workshops, day-planners, and seminars on time management, which teach individuals cooperations how to be more organized and more productive. Time management has become crucial in recent years thanks to the busy world in which we live.

Time management is important for everyone. While time management books and seminars often place their focus on business leaders and corporations, time management is also crucial for students, teachers, factory workers, professionals, and home makers. Time management is perhaps most essential for the person who owns his or her own business or who runs a business out of the home. Managing work and home responsibilities under the same roof takes a special type of time management.

An important aspect of time management is planning ahead.

Often, when individuals write down every last activity, they find that there is very little time left for sleeping. The end result is that many activities must be pared down, eliminated, consolidated, or delegated. Prioritizing activities on a scale of one to three - one being the most important and three being the least - can help with this task.

Lastly, good time management involves keeping a schedule of the tasks and activities that have been deemed important. adapted from www.wisegeek.com)

Some basic principles of time management:

  • Identify "Best Time" for Studying: different people have different kinds of concentration. Are you a "morning person" or a "night person"? Use your power times to study; use the down times for routines such as laundry and errands.
  • Study Difficult Subjects First: When you are fresh, you can process information more quickly and save time as a result.
  • Use Distributed Learning and Practice: you can study in different intervals by taking a break after every few hours or minutes depending on how much time you have got, and This keeps you from being tired and wasting time. This type of studying is important because while you are taking a break, the brain is still processing the information and relaxing for a while because you are not concentrating at that time but giving your brain cells time to 'chill'
  • Make Sure the Surroundings are Conducive to Studying: This will allow you to reduce distractions which can "waste time." If there are times in the residence halls or your apartment when you know there will be noise and commotion, use that time for mindless tasks.
  • try to create some time for Socializing, Entertainment and Relaxation: College is more than studying. You need to have a social life, yet, you need to have a balance in your life.
  • Make Sure you Have Time to Sleep and Eat Properly: Sleep is often an activity that students use as their time management .When they need a few extra hours for studying or socializing, they withdraw a few hours of sleep. This is not a good way to manage yourself in relation to time.
  • Try to put together activities:Bring your accounting or legal framework notes to study while you are preparing for the next class to start.

finding the time

When you are facing time management challenges, it may be hard to find time to read books or attend time management seminars. You should not give up.

Instead, think of how much time you spend during your transport time or driving. When you are driving, do you listen to music or the radio? Do you have an ipod or an mp3 player you could use during your commute?

Time management advice is not to hard to understand. It does not require intense thinking or research to understand. What is much more important is how much those time management principles and techniques become a part of you, how deeply they penetrate into your mind. This is why learning in small bits over an extended period of time, with each of those bits repeated a few times, will beat the effect of any intense time management seminar.

quote by Bernard Meltzer: "Hard work is often the easy work you did not do at the proper time."

  • (adapted from www.Time-Management-Guide.com)
  • There are various ways to manage your time and if we all follow them will will make a difference in our lives and hopefully succeed in our careers Time Management Technique #1: Recognize you can't do it almost of us of us are stretched too thin because we've bought into the myth that everyone can (and should) do it all. We should all work full-time, spend quality time with our children and spouses and pets, spend time with our friends, do volunteer and committee work, get involved in causes, work at staying fit and healthy, and spend time relaxing and rejuvenating ourselves. It doesn't matter. What matters is that you are healthy and happy with how you're spending your time. Decide what roles and activities are important to you and live your life accordingly.

Time Management Technique #3: Learn to say "Yes" and "No".

The inability to say "No" is the cause of an incredible amount of misunderstanding.Instead of saying "No," people say "Maybe" or "I might be able to do that" or "I'll see", creating the expectation that they will do whatever it is on the part of the listener and the pressure on themselves to do it. Then when they don't do it, the person they said "Maybe" to instead of "No" is disappointed/annoyed/hurt.

Make it a general rule not to say "Maybe" at all when you're asked to commit to something. Learn to make quick decisions and say "Yes" or "No" instead. And don't get hung up on elaborating. You don't have to give extensive reasons for your decision. A simple "No, I can't do that" is enough. The person you're speaking to will appreciate your honesty to waste their time. And you'll be without the pressure to fit in yet another activity or event you weren't that interested in anyhow.

Time Management Technique #5: Take time off.

Many business people work overtime. The might do it for financial reasons and to earn more money or to make their business more and more successful but before they realise, they're working seven days a week every week and wondering why they feel so tired all the time!

Will their business be more successful? The success of their business depends on what they do, not on how much time they spend doing it.its quality not quantity.

So introduce time off into your schedule. When you take time off, whether it's an afternoon or a weekend or a week, you return to your work refreshed and more productive, able to accomplish so much more in the amount of time available.

5 Time Management Techniques Equals More Time?

No. You will not get more hours or minutes in a day when you put these time management principles into action. But you will be able to more effectively manage the time you have. And in terms or what you get done and how you feel, that will make all the difference.(Obtained and paraphrased from www.sbinfocanada.about.com)
