In this society, why so many universities discuss about small classes and lecturing system? These two systems can affect the benefit of students, lecturers and university directly. Some researchers and lecturers will even say that "smaller classes are a key ingredient in student success" (Weingarten, 2003). Also, lecturing system less interacts with the lecturer, it will affect the students' result. Indeed, small classes have many benefits but the disadvantages more than benefits. However, we should replace small classes with lecturing system by viewing the side of operating cost, communication and relationship of student, fewer activity options and overly rapid work competition.
Firstly, operating cost of the university. Proponents of small classes claim that there will be less students in a class with one lecturer, the lecturer is better able to direct her attention and help to specific students. For an example, a lecturer can provide help to the students who are struggling with reading in the small classes. It is true that small classes will help students who are struggling with reading. In fact, having many small classes involves having more qualified lecturers. Also, it is going to have to hire more lecturers if an university wants to decrease the average number of students per class. In addition, to have more benefit for students in the small classes, university will need to hire effective lecturers who are loving, hardworking and willing to help with students of all backgrounds. By doing that to hire such lecturers, university is going to cost a lot of money. For example, while Bill Clinton was still the president of the United States, he proposed that $12 billion dollars be spent over seven years on training and hiring new lecturers for small classes (Viadero, 1998). Next, small classes need open a lot of class to teach if too many students take the same subject, it wills not enough classrooms to offer other subject. Again, now many universities had build, small classes require additional classrooms, calling for construction or renovation will increase the burden of university. Beside that, if an university construction to more small classes, it must hire more lecturers to teach in the small classes, by mandate to hire more lecturers will cause the hiring of under-qualified lecturers. Furthermore, lecturing system can teach many students only with one lecture and teach large amount of students by using less electricity, lecturing system can help university decrease the operating cost as well. Thus, we should replace small classes with lecturing system to decrease the operating cost of university.
Moreover, small classes and lecturing system also related to communication ad relationship of students. Some people say that small classes impact not only students' academic achievements, but it also improve social skills and relationships with their lecturer. Granted, the lecturer could give more help to a small group of students without worrying too much about the students misbehaving and give those students individual help. However, individual could help the struggling students receive the help they need, but it will causes the lecturer too tired and not all student suit the individual help by the lecturer in small classes. In addition, for those students who not suit the individual help by lecturer, it will cause those students feel tension. According to the researcher report, there have 80% of students feel tension with the individual help by lecturer. In some serious case, student will quit college and stop study because they feel stress by facing lecturer. Furthermore, small classes have poor discussion between each others, because there have just few students to discuss. Instead, lecturing system has the better discussion. Although small classes improve social skills and relationships with lecturer, but small classes cannot guarantee increased student achievement or social skills in public, because the students may not have a sufficient amount of peers to interact with if the class is small. Also, interaction with peers is a very important part of students' lives; limiting class size may also limit the types of students in a classroom. If a student does not enough experience with all students' backgrounds, he may have some trouble in the future interacting with students of different backgrounds. Other than that, the students will feel tension to work in the society, because the student does not have experience that interacting with public or many people. Hence, small classes shouldn't continuous using in university, because small classes system will make many students feel tension by facing their lecturer and stop study.
Next, small classes also will cause the students fewer activity options. Critics of university maintain that the lecturers will also find that in a small class, they will be easy to manage their students, so discipline problems will be less frequent and severe because the classroom lecturer will have better control small amount of students. In addition, lecturers will focus less on disciplinary actions and can spend the time to focus on teaching. Indeed, small amount of students can be easy control and lecturers will focus less on disciplinary actions, but small amount of students will cause the students fewer activity options. In fact, some university activities require a minimum number of participants such as football and camping. Also, activities such as small group projects are much harder to implement in a small class because there are fewer students to divide into groups, limiting students' options. Other options, such as large-scale games, may be impossible in small class settings because there are not enough pupils to allow for game play. By having fewer activity options in university, students will feel boring. Therefore, students will hard to concentrate and enjoy the university life with a boring mind. According to scientists, a student keep on study will not be good. Instead a student who study for 60% and play for 40% in his university life will better than the student who study for 100%. As a result, lecturing system is better than small classes, because lecturing system have enough students to participate the large-scale games, so that students can enjoy their university as well.
Furthermore, small classes will have the overly rapid work completion problem. Supporter of small classes say that in the small classes have the opportunity to complete their work quickly because in the small classes, lecturer no need to explain too many time and can teach them directly. Other than that, with a small class, the lecturer could use internet to post the assignment to students, so that students can finish it at home. But, lecturing system spent a lot of time to explain because the amount of students too many. It is true that while students having the opportunity to complete their work quickly may seem like a good thing, because it save down a lot of times. Nevertheless, although in the lecturing system, students are commonly slowed in their work efforts by peers who need some additional guidance but this temporary slowing gives these potentially speedy students the opportunity to more fully explore the topics covered in the lesson instead of simply racing through and failing to absorb the information (Schreiner, 2010). For this reason, lecturing system should use in university, because this system help students fully explore the topics covered in the lesson and absorb the information as well.
In conclusion, we should replace small classes with lecturing system. In addition, if an university continuous using small classes, it will caused many disadvantages to student. Hence, continuous using small classes will cause an university over use the budget, students will feel the university life bad and failing to absorb the information. In summary, this all happen will influence the university system and students directly.
