In my next group assignment which will be in January next year and can review it till the end of my course and also at my work-place.

Time Management

Before starting my work calculate that how much time I will take to complete it. Record the time I have taken and compare it with the preset time.

Stop watch, preset schedules for assignments & other work. Companions- to maintain a healthy competition in the time we take to finish our work/tasks.

Create Time Consciousness in me. Finish my work within the standard time or the time set for that work.

I can review it till 20th December, which is the Deadline for the submission of my assignments.

After reviewing it, I can plan to complete my next assignments in a better way and it is a continuous process till the end of my course.

Control my temper

Meditate regularly to develop a calm mind & control temper. Attend anger management class. Read books and watch DVD's which may guide how to control my anger.

To calmly assess any situation rather than lose my temper. Avoid pointless confrontations and have compassion instead.

I can review it daily, because every day there is something that makes me angry or lose my temper. And also I can review it in the seminar or group discussions where many people disagree with my opinion.

Investigative Skills

Motivate myself to upgrade my knowledge so that I can be more aware about the real business. Always ask, to clear my doubts, whenever I'm not able to understand anything.

Faculty, fellow students, internet, books related to my studies/work/business.

To concentrate in any research or while investigating for something. Always upgrade my knowledge.

Review it in 2-3weeks. Latest in this Christmas holidays by going through the modules and recall them. The amount of information retained in my mind will help me to know how much I have understood and also help me to encourage myself in gathering more information in my further course.

Introduction

In this assignment we have made a critical analysis on the Personal Development Plan (PDP), learning styles and the academic skills needed by an individual. PDP is a plan that comprehends the core areas required to improve in-order for me to be successful in the corporate world. While doing my learning journal, it will give me in-depth information about the areas of improvement and also help me to know my present capabilities and weaknesses through personal SWOT and it will also enable me to gain core knowledge in my MBA , as well as demonstrate the performance of studies.

Background

The purpose of this Personal Development Plan is to assess and judge my present skills, capabilities and also the weaknesses in me that I found through experiences. The evidence of which can be seen as personal SWOT, learning Journal in the Appendices. There is a good description of theories and models on the different learning styles like Kolb's Learning Style, VAK (Visual Auditory Kinesthetic), Honey and Mumford theory, etc.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN

Development needs analysis and Personal Development Plan (PDP) is best suitable to find out the actual worth of any individual. It not only highlights the experiences of a person but also make aware about the weak-ends. But first, we should know what a Personal Development Plan is?

Personal Development Plan is a set of various aspects which is related to the day-to-day work of any individual. PDP sometimes is a requirement of employee's resume and students are also asked to make a personal development plan during their business trainings.

Learning Styles

The three main components of learning are:-

Perceiving information - means the information we gather from various sources.

Processing information - means the information that we gathered, we process it mentally, think about it and memorise it.

Organising and presenting information - means how we share the information with others depending upon how we had organised and present the information.

There are number of learning styles that can help an individual to identify his/her learning ability. Some of the learning styles of various authors are as follows

KOLB'S LEARNING STYLE

David Kolb published his learning style in 1984. This learning theory is a set of or combination of four distinct learning styles that helps to understand the individual's way of learning. It is a continuous process.

The four main components of the Kolb's learning style are as follows:

Concrete Experience (CE)

Reflective Observation (RO)

Abstract Conceptualisation (AC)

Active Experimentation (AE)

These components represent a combination of two preferred styles, for which Kolb used the following terms:

Diverging (CE/RO)

Assimilating (AC/RO)

Converging (AC/AE)

Accommodating (CE/AE)

All the above aspects of the Kolb's learning style are inter-related with each other. It depends upon the individual that which approach he/she chooses either through its approach to the experience or emotionally transforms the experience.

The learning style is even easier to understand through a two-by-two matrix view.

VAK LEARNING STYLE

Visual, Auditory, Kinaesthetic (VAK) is a simple learning style to understand which kind of learner an individual is through an easy questionnaire.

According to the VAK model, majority of people finds a dominant learning style however some have mixed while some have a balanced mixture of all the three learning styles.

KINAESTHETIC touching & doing

Visual involves observing things, seeing pictures, diagrams, displays, etc.

Auditory involves transfer of information through listening to the spoken words, sounds and noises, etc.

Kinaesthetic involves physical experience like touching, doing, holding, feeling, etc.

The word Kinaesthetic comes from two GREEK words i.e. Kineo which means MOVE

Aesthesis which means SENSATION.

IMPORTANCE OF INDEPENDENCE- AS A LEARNER

Your attitude to your studies will reflect your experience of MBA and affects the reward you get. In order to get the most out of the time at the campus or institution, it is worth thinking about how you can become an independent and assertive learner - qualities that will be invaluable to you now, to your employer later and throughout your career.

Features of an Independent learner are as follows:

(a) Motivated to learn

(b) Manage own learning

(c) Reflect on learning.

The above features are the key to success and also provide an insight into the learning achievements that will enhance motivation to continue learning.

Motivated to learn:

Motivated to learn is being responsible for self-learning, set challenging but attainable goals, deals with procrastination. Respond to growing pressure to achieve goals which is also as seeking personal satisfaction and determination to learn and gain as much as you can. Previous experience, feeling of achievement and success leads to motivation and helps in identifying new ways to achieve something new.

Manage own learning:

An independent learner knows that he has to learn things on his own. An independent learner seeks to think out of the box i.e. even guided by his tutor or superior, he prefer to search on his own from different sources available to him and is dedicated to find new strategies for learning. Managing own learning means how to utilise time and how he understand things easily.

Reflects on learning:

An independent learner has an ability to reflect on his/her progress regularly. He/she records his/her areas of development and reviews them accordingly. An independent learner also knows the importance of feedback given by the tutors and aware of using it in the future challenges. Keeping records of the skills and review them regularly is a key feature of a good learner.

NEED FOR A 'GROWTH' MINDSET AS A LEARNER

What is Mindset?

Mindsets are beliefs-beliefs about yourself and your most basic qualities. Think about your intelligence, your talents and your personality. Mindset can be fixed or growth mindset.

Fixed Mindset is defined as individuals who believe that their traits are just givens. They have a certain amount of brains and talent and nothing can change that. If they have a lot, they're all set, but if they don't... So people in this mindset worry about their traits and how adequate they are. They have something to prove to themselves and others.

Growth Mindset is defined as individuals who see their qualities as things that can be developed through their dedication and effort. Sure they're happy if they're brainy or talented, but that's just the starting point. They understand that no one has ever accomplished great things and they put their efforts to achieve the highest achievement.

As a learner there is a great importance of growth mindset because ability to achieve is not sufficient for a learner. He has to be pro-active in doing his job and also he should be committed towards his goal. Higher level of interest in the target and timeless efforts are the sign of growth mindset.

Growth Mindset is important because:

It helps the learner to put his intelligence into actions through which it can be developed also.

Learner faces challenges and growth mindset helps in meeting the challenge as an interesting aspect instead of a burden.

If a learner failed in achieving his target, he will be demotivated. But if he is a growth mindset then he will take his failure as an opportunity to learn and whatever happens is just an experience.

Learner has to put his efforts on developing his skills regularly which can never be useless but necessary to grow his skills which can only be possible if the learner has a growth mindset.

It boosts up the enthusiasm of the learner.

It changes the way of thinking.

It gives a new meaning to failure. For instance, a fixed mindset learner will get demotivated by the criticism and negative feedbacks given to him by the tutor. But a growth mindset learner will take that criticism as an opportunity to improve his present skills and encourage him to perform well and good in the future.

I concluded that Growth Mindset is of great importance for a learner because to be a successful person in life, everyone has to put his efforts to achieve the desired goal or achievement and he has to be a broad-minded person so that he can cope-up with the today's expectation of this competitive world.
