Professional development is the process by which a person maintains the quality and relevance of professional services throughout his/her working life. It has been defined by the Institute for continuing Professional Development as: The systematic maintenance, improvement and broadening of knowledge and the development of personal qualities necessary for the education of a professional and technical duty throughout the practitioner's working life.
Professional development is one of the essential parts of our life without it the life is of value less. This requires self-directed, independent learning and also demands active rather than passive concept to learning. This all is about taking decision what to do or what not to do. This refers to skills and knowledge attained for both personal and career development. There are various approaches of professional development, including different types of skills. Professional such as an engineer, teacher, lawyers and individual etc should participate in professional development because of an interest in lifelong learning, a sense of moral obligation. There are many professional skills require in every stages of life in an organisation and individual. Skills requirements for organisation to organisation differs country wise. The requirements of organisation of Nepal may not be the same for USA. So the individual have to develop skills according to the requirements of organisation.  American and Canadian nurses, as well as those in UK are required to participate in formal and informal professional development in order to maintain professional registration. Other group such as engineering and geosciences regularly bodies also have mandatory professional development requirements.
Professional development is formal type of vocational education to maintain qualification or requirements and is gained typically by post-secondary or ploy-technical training. This may also come in form of pre-service of in-service professional development program. Different organization gives professional development training to the employers individually or in group. Individual may pursue professional development individually or programs may be offered by HR department. This helps individual to develop professional skills such as leadership skills, task skills, creative and problem solving skills, etc.
Importance of Professional Development
Professional development is a continuous process form entry level to education until retirement. Education engage people to prepare themselves, continuously update themselves, review them and reflect on their own performance. If student want to successfully prepare for the future, they must be prepared for the future themselves. People need professional development in every level of their life starting from school level. Just as knowledge and skill requirements are changing for students to students and as well as for education system to system.
It is the ability of person to do something. Personal skills and qualities are important to employers, work based, colleges. There are many kinds of skills needed in different sector of work. People working in technical field needs more technical skills and people working in management area needs managerial skills so the needs of skills depends upon the responsibility given to the people and he/ she have to develop or should gain the required skills in them. Following are the personal skills you need at job.
Carefulness: people need to think and develop skills to think and plan carefully before acting. Injuries suffered in the workplace are common occurrence in many workplaces, but workers who working in there should handle the work carefully. People should take responsibility of themselves not to get injured and of other co-workers to also to protect from injury. So carefulness is essential skills needed for people to take care of themselves and others.
Cooperation: This is also one of the skills needed for people at workplace and in any stage of life. There are lot of work which a single person can't perform so he/ she needs help form other. Cooperation is the process of working or acting together, which can be accomplished by both intentional and non-intentional agents. It involves things working in side by side, while in its more complex forms. Many works are complex so we need cooperation.
Discipline: It is one of the most essential requirements of the people, without which the life of people is useless. This skill is important for communication with the co-workers and with higher level of authority person.  "Discipline is the instant willingness and obedience to all orders, respect for authority, self reliance and teamwork. The ability to do the right thing even when no one is watching or suffer the consequences of guilt which produces pain in our bodies, through pain comes discipline."
Leadership: Leadership skills are one of the universally recognised as a key ingredient in management. Leaders have authority to control employee and give proper responsibility according to their skills. There is no organisation to teach you leadership skill is something you have to learn or gain a leadership skill. You learn principally from experience.
Good attitude: positive attitude helps to cope more easily with the daily affairs of life. It brings optimism into your life, and makes it easier to avoid worry and negative thinking. If you adopt it as a way of life, it will bring constructive changes into your life, and makes them happier, brighter and more successful. With a positive attitude people can see the bright side of life, become optimistic and expect the best to happen. It is certainly a state of mind that is well worth developing and strengthening. Positive attitude helps to develop more skills positive thinking, constructive thinking, creative thinking, etc. Positive attitude helps us achieving goals and attaining success, it leads to happiness and success and can change your whole life. It brings more happiness in life.
Character: Mainly there are three types of character which affect the career of people, personal, social and cultural. Your attitude includes the personal character which you have towards challenges you face in your career. Having positive attitude will improve chance of success and in achieving your goals. Negative attitude harms people career and performance.
Safe work behaviours: Safety at work is very important. Employee behaviours and attitudes towards safety can have a tremendous impact on the frequency of accidents and injuries. Here are some strategies for managing this very human risk. Most employees have a sense of self- preservation and take precaution to protect them from injury. One of the most common strategy for installing safety attitudes and behaviours in employees is called behaviour-based safety, in which employers attempt to create a safety culture by encouraging employees to provide feedback to each other to try to keep each other safe.
Leadership: Good leadership requires deep human qualities, beyond conventional nations of authority. In modern age good leaders are an enabling force, helping people and organizations to perform and develop, which implies that a sophisticated alignment be achieved of people's needs, and the aims of the organization. Effective leadership does not necessary require great intellectual capacity or technical. These attribute might help but not essential. Leadership in modern age require attributes and behaviours it of course involve decisions and actions relating to all sorts of other things.
Multitasking skills: Multitasking is trying to do too many things at once. It may be reading your email and making a list, and talking in the phone all at the same time or even cramming a busy social life on top of an already demanding job. If a person can do multitasking then he/she can do tasks more than once, effectively lowering our achievement levels and creating frustration for those we work with and ourselves. In today's workplace multitasking is evaluated to quality to aspire to. It is made out to be a skill that we should all master. There are many reasons why multitasking is expected.
Time management skills: Generally time management refers to the development of process and tools that increase efficiency and productivity. In processional sector time has most important role. If once we master the time management skills, we'll be more organized, efficient and happier. Time management is essential for both personal and professional. People who use these techniques routinely are the highest achievers in all walks of life, from business to sport to public services. If we use these skills well, then we will be able to function exceptionally well, even under intense pressure. Personal time management skill includes goal setting, planning, prioritizing, decision making and delegating.
Responsibility: people with character accept responsibility. They make decisions and determine their own destiny in life. Accepting responsibilities involves taking risks and being accountable which is sometimes uncomfortable. Accepting responsibility involves taking calculated, not foolish risks. It means evaluating all pros and cons, then taking the most appropriate decision or action. Responsible people don't think that the world owes them a living. Responsible people accept and learn from their mistakes. People can do three things about mistakes ignore them, deny them, accept and learn from them. Professional and responsible person accept and learn from the mistake. It is risky but rewarding. It instead we defend our weaknesses; we actually start building our lives around them, making them a centre point, rather than overcoming them.

While entering in to the new career everybody wants to develop the professional skills necessary to be successful on the job. These skills are easy to develop. The first way to learn these skills is by modelling someone within your company that you admire and feel you can trust. This person can be someone to go to for advice, question, and concerns that you have about how to handle a certain situation, watch their body language, interactions, tone of voice and skills in handling others throughout the day. Evaluate what you think are the strongest skills and copy them, but in a way you that works the best for you. We can also gain skills by the training offered by the company on how to be effective on the job and with the client. Being proactive is a professional skill in itself, and by taking responsibility for your own growth shows that you are on your way to being a valuable employee.
Participate with different situations, types of people, and events helps to hone your abilities along with being able to adapt. The more that you practice what you are learning, the more habitual they will become over time. If even you make a mistake, don't chastise yourself but instead choose to learn from it. Evaluate yourself and try to recover the mistake. A great way to keep track of your progress is to keep a diary to reflect on what you tried that day.
