Procrastination and whether its Behavioral or Psychological

Often times I find myself in dilemmas for being late with payments on bills, which leads to bad credit rating. Having not so favorable credit history will forbid many adults from getting the job of their choice. I begin to wonder if procrastination could be more serious than I actually thought it could be due to the detrimental results. Considering the beginning of my procrastination lifestyle, recalling many incidences where I missed excellent opportunities, only because I would neglect to meet deadline dates. I can remember procrastination even in elementary school. I never really thought that waiting until the last minute could be a behavioral disturbance with many psychological effects. Many of my grades were above average during school, however, I only can imagine how much further my life would have been without a life of procrastination.

Observing students in the classroom not functioning, as well as they should, led to question, and research the causes and effects of procrastination. Normally, while other students are just about to finish projects. When given an assignment, project may or may not be completed. Is it the child is a slow learner, or they do not understand the assignment? How do educators recognize behavior of procrastination at such an early age?

Introduction

Even though procrastination may seem to be a simplistic flaw in character or bad habit, studies have shown that it can be detrimental in the learning environment. Procrastination can be the first sign of a great threat to the education of a child. Causes and effects can lead to disastrous disorders if not corrected. Serious effects of procrastination may be cause for concern of additional learning and behavioral disorder in early childhood development. Teachers must recognize the symptoms, but be cautious not to label the child.

Procrastinators end up with many problems, because their problems snowball. They do not turn in work, or they turn in poor-quality work, so they get poor grades. They have a hard time concentrating on what needs to be done, so they daydream instead of work. They forget when their school assignments are due. This all snowballs into one big problem. They feel sad, scared, .angry, or cranky. Their stomachs hurt because they worry so much about the work they don't get done. (Stiefer, 17-19)

How can we determine if the student has a learning disorder? Does the child lack of participation in class activities? S may be minor disruption of such as talking, playing, and not paying attention during instructional lessons. Psychologists are recognizing that certain actions may be behavioral as well as emotional. Revealing these learning disorders; low performance and psychological disturbances or purely a rebellious attitude or laziness. Educators can improve learning difficulties by recognizing the symptoms of procrastination. Researchers conducted studies to understand the effects of procrastination in early childhood have taken several approaches to understanding procrastination

Educator and parents have the responsibility of maintaining safe havens within our classrooms for children in early developmental stages of life. The ability to accomplish more to the where students feel the ability to work and not feel threaten for making mistakes. Encourage students to become better learners with praise and rewards, rather than punishment for unwanted behavior. Baker, "Today's educators are asked to meet the diverse needs of all students, including those with emotional or behavioral disorders (EBD). " (pp51-64) The responsibility of the educators to meet the demands of behavior and learning difficulties.

How can students achieve scholastic reward if they do not comprehend? To understand up the early stages of development of the bad habit. Are teachers maintaining quality levels of encouragement the course strengthened my thinking abilities? It occurred throughout the day. I become agitated when I procrastinate and this makes me have an excuse not to get to work. Knowledge in the classroom will be supportive when working in the schools. It can measure student achievement and focus on the study, which students are the last ones to turn in their papers as the opposed to the first ones completing. A certain few that may be over achievers. Recognize the quality of people one associated would help in building and improving the quality of conversations.

Belief that unclear instructional guidance produces inability to succeed for many students. Therefore, measureable resources must be a part of the classroom agenda to develop desirable learning conduct. To avoid procrastination, instructor should teach skills and habits. Weekly follow up sessions with students to chart their progress. Monitor and scale down to time schedules for completion of projects. Preparation time management schedules into daily, weekly, or monthly expectations and objectives. Psychologist considered writing out the task seen by order to the performer to obtain realistic abstract. This can be on a weekly base or daily based on the age of the child. For students with special treats and fun activities specifically designed. To accomplish this, I must look ahead for class assignments and work at ahead of schedule rather than wait until the last minutes, so I can have that time free. The goal for me today is a more comfortable living environment. To clear the clutter from my working area, however with the deadline date so close, how do I accomplish while still working on my paper? I could hire someone to clean, or I can schedule minor allotments throughout the day to accomplish. May 10 minutes before and after class, teachers could have a student prepare for next assignment. Now write down the action take no longer than 10 minutes to do these activities. Clean off the computer desk of unnecessary items, clean items the desk and state where you will put them, File the paper for later reference to locate the item.

Numerous officials propose that keeping journals, listing of things to do, and appointment calendars are the basis of doing things on time. Steiefer's recommendation is for students to "Break big tasks into smaller ones. Big jobs can seem overwhelming. This can make it hard to get started and lead to fear of failure. Bite-size pieces are always easier to swallow." (Stiefer, 17-19)

Behavior mask as procrastination may me unnoticed for a cause of learning ,or reading problems, lack of comprehension for assignments and may not actually be a behavioral problems. The outward appearance of a talking problem may be the symptom for something quiet defining as a learning disorder. One such disorder is " Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder -- also referred to ADD or ADHD -- is a biological, brain based condition that is characterized by poor attention and distractibility and/or hyperactive and impulsive behaviors."

Behaviors of emotionally disturbed learners interfere with their development and with their ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with others. Characteristics of learners in this group vary. Some learners may be outspoken, defiant, and rude seekers of attention. Others may be withdrawn, quiet, and even fearful.

Some emotionally challenged students cannot make independent decisions. Their peers may refuse their request for help, causing them to have low self-concepts and perform poorly in school. (Armstrong, )

Sometimes in the home environment, parents may say the child is lazy, stubborn, or just bad. Asking a child to complete homework may carry over into the home. Children normally may not want to clean their room however to cancel o are instead of working on projects student may exhibit tendencies of disruption in class.

Although a student may have anxiety of failure, procrastination may be symptomatic of many learning problems. Experts state that procrastination has a correlation to many behavior and psychological disorders. Noting research conduct by Ferrari,

"Procrastination also has a complex relationship with other psychological disorders (Ferrari 1995). The A.P.A. Diagnostic and statistical manual relates it to different systems of diseases and it seems to play a different role in each type of disease. Although, it is not these syndromes per se that correlate with procrastination, but a synergetic combination of traits." (para 1)

Being disruptive could indicate the child is bored, but becomes restless. Learning disorders may not be the cause, but a lack of understanding. Should we think the student has a learning disorder?

Social psychologists have acknowledged that personality and environment have joint influences on behavior (Fiske, 2004). This circumstance begs the question: Does procrastination behavior result from fear of failure, from self-presentation worries, or from both? Schouwenberg (1992) concluded that fear of failure as a personality trait is unrelated to behavioral procrastination, although other researchers have found that it is related to trait procrastination (e.g., Solomon & Rothblum, 1984). Because it appears, as indicated by previous studies, that trait procrastination and behavioral procrastination can function differently, in the present study I examine both, looking at actual (behavioral) procrastination and at participants' self-reports of trait procrastination. Conclusion

Indeed, while procrastination can be detrimental in the learning environment. Self-esteem is essential for school-aged children's optimum health. High self-esteem is related and linked to increased school performance, improved health, and productive behavior. (Dalgas-Pelish, 341-8)
