"Personal Development Plan is a structured and supported process undertaken by a learner to reflect upon their own learning, performance and/or achievement and to plan for their personal, educational and career development."
Personal Development Plan for me is the way how I can reach my goals in my life and work, and how I can improve my skills in my workplace. So when I have Personal Development Plan I can see my strengths and weaknesses, and I can try to improve my weaknesses.
The Personal Development Plan for me is a chance to know my self better. I can see from my PDP what I want to achieve, what will help me to reach my objectives and what will stand on my way.
Of course one part from my objectives in my PDP is connected with my work. I'm working in a farm on the field, I'm driving tractor and I'm picking herbs from the fields. I have team with Indian ladies, who are picking the herbs from the fields and I have to take the herbs to the cold-store. Every day I have order that I have to finish for the day and every time this order is different.
Some of the objectives that I want to achieve in my Personal Development Plan are the following:
I want to improve my English, because this is very important for my work;
I want to finish every order that I have for the day, without leaving something for the next day;
I want to improve my quality control skills for the herbs;
I want to remain calm and to try to listen more to the people, who I'm working with;
I have to take all of the herbs on time in the cold store, before they become rotten;
I have to keep my tractor and the trailer always clean, because after all I transport herbs;
I want to improve my strength (dutiful, self-discipline, reliable, etc.) and to make my weaknesses (indecisive, predictable, not so flexible, etc.) to be strengths, etc.
So when I have PDP I can develop all of these objectives and I can find a way to reach them.
After all learning is a lifelong and life-wide activity. Every day you are learning something new and this helps you to achieve your goals.
"Having developed the model over many years prior, David Kolb published his learning styles model in 1984. The model gave rise to related terms such as Kolb's experiential learning theory (ELT), and Kolb's learning styles inventory (LSI). Kolb's learning theory sets out four distinct learning styles (or preferences), which are based on a four-stage learning cycle."
"Kolb's model therefore works on two levels - a four-stage cycle:
Concrete Experience - (CE)
Reflective Observation - (RO)
Abstract Conceptualization - (AC)
Active Experimentation - (AE)"
There are eighty of the learning style questionnaire and the score of a questionnaire showed I am a reflector, like to stand back to consider experiences and observe them from many different perspectives. When we are discussing something with my colleagues I always prefer to listen what all of them are thinking and after that I'm saying what I'm thinking. I prefer to collect data and to think about it thoroughly before coming to any conclusion. I would rather postpone reaching definitive conclusions for as long as possible instead of saying something thoughtless. I listen to others and get the drift of the discussion before making my own point. I prefer to think about all of the different ways of the problem before solving it, because it is better to make a good considered decision instead of quickly decide something and then realize it was a mistake. And as we used to say in Bulgaria: "You have to measure three times and to cut one time". This means that you have to think a lot about your problem before make a decision, especially if the decision is important.
I usually consider lots of things before making a decision and this slow me up to make up my mind. When I face a problem I will think first for all of situations, then what can come on my way and after that I can make up my mind. But from other side, this is not so bad that I'm taking decision slowly, because like this I will consider the situation and I will do whatever is best. I think that decisions based on a through analysis of all the information are better than those based on intuition, because sometimes the intuition lies you.
My work is connected with collecting herbs from the field and takes them to our cold store and it is very important to take the best decision. Because if these ladies who pick up the herbs from the fields are quicker I have to decide if it will be better to wait them and to take all of the herbs to the cold store or to take some of the pallets to the cold store and come back. Of course it depends also from the weather, because if it is hot I have to take the herbs to the cold store as quick as possible. If I leave the herbs on the field for too long they will be rubbish. That's why it is better for me if it's raining, because the herbs will remain fresh.
"The Belbin Model is a robust and highly effective concept on teamwork that is the product of many years of research. British psychologist Dr Meredith Belbin has worked to achieve a coherent and accurate system that explains individual behaviour and its influence on team success. These behavioural patterns are called "Team Roles" and these nine roles cover the types of individual behaviour at work in a team." These team roles are: company worker (implementer), chairman (co-ordinator), shaper, plant, resource investigator, monitor/evaluator, specialist, team worker and completer/finisher.
In the roles, I am a company worker. I'm dutiful and also hard-working, self discipline. I think these are my strengths. My weaknesses are that I'm predictable, conservative and not so flexible. So I would like to improve my strengths and to make my weaknesses to be my strengths.
I am not good at spontaneous activity which does not allow time for planning and preparation and take immediate action and short-cut to produce results. This shows that I'm conservative and not flexible, and also indecisive. I want everything to be done my way, because I've done it before like this and I know that everything will be ok. And if I do it different way, I'll not be sure if it will be done well or not. Like every day when I go to the fields with my team of Indian ladies, when one of them make a full box I take it in the trailer. I don't wait until every one of them to make a full box and after that to collect all of the boxes. Some of the people who I'm working with ask me: "Why you don't stay in the tractor and wait until these ladies make may be 3 or 4 boxes and then go to collect them?". But I know that it is better when I do this my way. I know I should accept different and new ideas, but how I will know that they will be reasonable. Some people will say that I should take a risk sometimes, but why I should do it if I know that I'll do it well my way. And this make me predictable person, because everyone will know exactly what I'm going to do in a particular moment. I think I'm not so flexible, because I'm good at the work I'm doing now and I give everything to do this perfect. I don't pay attention to anything else only to the thing that I' doing in my work. So if I try to learn different things every day and to improve them I can be more flexible and not so conservative and predictable.
So one of my goals that link to my work is to improve my English to the end of my course in Plumpton College. The English language is very important for my work, because my manager call me every day to tell me what I should do the next day and if I don't understand him very well, he has to explain to me again and we are wasting time. I work with Indian people on the fields and their English is not very well, too. So I think if I know English better I can choose the best words to explain to them what they should do and they will understand me easily. As I said this is very important for my work, because if I know English very well my manager can rely on me and he will know that when he tell me something I will do it exactly the way he wants. And like this I can do a lot of different things in my work. Of course if my English is better I'll be more self - confident, I can be more responsible for the people I'm working with and I'll do everything better. And if I know English better it will be more enjoyable for me to talk with the other people.
Every day when I finish work in the afternoon my manager give my new order sheet for the next day, he explain me what I have to pick up from the fields and exactly from which fields. If I don't understand something I have to ask him, because on the next day I'm starting work too early and if I didn't understand something my manager will be not able to help me. Or during the day he calls me to explain me something else and I have to understand everything in order to work further.
And because of all of these things that are so important for my work I want to improve my English to a better level. This goal is realistic and achievable, because if I'm tenacious and I study every day I can reach this goal.
Another one of my objectives that relates to my work is to finish every order that I have for the day, without leaving something for tomorrow.
I can reach this goal if I'm quicker and organized. Because if I have three or four different types of herbs on my order and of course they are on different fields, I have to know where every one of the fields is. I have to know on which field is better to go first and which of the herbs are easier to pick up. I have to know which one of the herbs they need most urgently in the pack house. Because if I have order for example for 250 boxes of coriander, 130 boxes of mint and 75 boxes of chives, I have to know:
Which one of these herbs they need in the pack house first;
If they don't have urgent order in the pack house and they don't need some of these herbs so quickly, I have to know which one of them is more easier to pick up, so I can start with it
I have to know from how many people will be my team for the day, so I can tell my manager approximately what time I can finish with this order.
Of course to finish my order for the day don't depend only on me, it depends on my team and on the weather, too. If the people from my team don't work quickly and they are tired I can't make them work faster. Sometimes I help them to put bunches in the boxes and I count them, and like this they are quicker. But if the weather is not good and it is raining all day, these ladies can't be quicker. They are sitting in the rain, in the mud and they are trying to do their best to pick up quick because they want to go home faster, too. On the other hand if the quality of the herbs on the fields is not good, this also slows our job. Because if the quality of the herbs is good these ladies can pick up the herbs and make bunches quicker, but if the quality of the herbs is not good these ladies have to choose the better ones and this slows their work.
So this objective depends on a lot of things but I think it's realistic and achievable, if me and my team we are organized.
The other one of my goals is to improve my quality control skills for the herbs. My manager can help me for this if he tells me everything he knows for the quality of the herbs. He can tell me which herbs are better to pick them up now and which are better to leave them to grow a little bit more. If I improve my quality control skills I can be more confident in my work. So I think if I can go on a course for the quality control skills it will be easier for me and for my manager. Because after that he don't have to explain me when I have to pick up the herbs, if they grow enough for picking, if they are not good enough and it is better if I leave them.
This goal is achievable and realistic, because my manager have time now to explain me all of these things.
Another one of my personal objectives that links to my work is to remain calm and to listen more to the people I'm working with. This is very important, because if I'm aggressive and I don't listen to the other people, nobody will want to work with me. It is better to have good relationship with the people you are working with, because every time when you need help they will help you. Like one time when I was stuck with my tractor in the mud on the field, I was alone and there was nobody who can help me. But I'm in good relationship with these boys that are irrigating the fields and when I call them to ask them for help, they told me that they will come to help me. And there were a lot of times when they were annoying me, but I tried to remain calm and I was listening to them, and I didn't argue with them. And if I fight with them and we are not in good relationship, they will not come to help me when I need them. And it is always better if you are listening to other people even if you are not agree with what they are saying and after they finish you can say your opinion.
I think this objective is realistic and achievable, and it depends only on me. I'm tenacious and if I want to improve this I can.
One more of my goals that relates to my work is to transport the herbs to the cold store on time. This is the most important thing, because if I leave the herbs on the field for too long they will become rotten or they will dry. This will be a lot of waste for my farm. This transport of the herbs depends on the weather and on the ladies of my team. So when it is raining I can leave the herbs on the field for a little bit longer because it is not hot and they will remain fresh. But when it is shining I can't leave them on the field for too long, I have to go for a several times to the cold store to transport them. When it is hot I help these ladies so they can pick up quicker and I can take the herbs to the cold store faster. Sometimes I leave next to every one of them a box, so they don't have to go the trailer, or I count their bunches for them in their box.
This goal is realistic and achievable, because I think me and my team we are organized and we can finish our work on time.
Another one of my goals is to keep clean my tractor and my trailer all the time
This is important because it is always better and easier when you are working in clean place. These boxes in which the ladies are picking up the herbs have to be clean, too. Every day when I have more time I clean my tractor and the trailer, because if some people come to check if it is clean and it's not there will be a lot of penalties for the farm and I don't want this.
This objective is achievable and realistic, because I have time to clean my tractor and the trailer.

So I'm self-disciplined, tenacious and organized, and when I want to do something I do it. Every day I start work in 7 o'clock. I'm going on the field where the ladies from my team have to pick up the herbs and I'm waiting for them to start. We are working approximately from 7:00 to 12:30 and after that we have lunch from 12:30 to 13:00. Then we continue working approximately from 13:00 to 17:00. Every day we finish our order and we don't leave something for tomorrow. It was only once or twice when we couldn't finish our order but this was because: one time the ladies were not a lot - only 7 and the other time it was because we have too much herbs to pick up for one day. When I finish work I clean my tractor and the trailer from 17:00 to 18:00. After that I take shower and prepare something for dinner from 18:00 to 19:00. And I have practically 2 hours to study for the college before I go to sleep. Every day I have almost the same routine, but sometimes I finish later or earlier.
From Monday to Saturday
From 7:00-12:30 - picking herbs and transport them to the cold store
From 9:00 - 9:30 breakfast;
From 9:30 - 12:30 - writing my homework for the college
From 12:30 - 13:00 - lunch break;
From 13:00 - 17:00 picking herbs and transport them to the cold store;
From 17:00 - 18:00 - cleaning the tractor and the trailer
From 12:30 - 13:00 - lunch;
From 13:00 - 16:00 - resting;
From 16:00 - 18:00 writing my homework for the college
From 18:00 - 19:00 - shower and dinner;
From 19:00 - 21:00 - writing my homework in the college
From 18:00 - 18:30 - dinner;
From 18:30 to 20:30 - writing my homework for the college
Table 2 - Showing my routine all the same every day
Every day I try to plan my day and to finish everything I have to, but sometimes there are some unexpected changes. And everyone knows that it can't be every time like you want or like you expected to be. So I try to do my best to finish my work on time and when I finish everything I want I feel really better. I remember one time we had only flat parsley on the order for the day, it was may be 11:00 and my manager rang me that in the pack house they need quickly rosemary. But this rosemary was on a field that was far away from us. So all of the ladies from my team left everything on this field and went quickly with their microbus to the other field, but I had to take all of the boxes from the field to the cold store before I went there. So they were there before me and I was worrying if I will get there on time, and I was trying to be faster because if I didn't go on time there this rosemary will stay for a long time on the field and this is not good. So I was hurrying and when I went there, my manager told one of the boys from the farm to go to this field before me so he can collect all of the boxes with herbs that these ladies pick up. I was so happy about that because I was worrying about the herbs and when I saw that everything is all right and I made my mind easy. So sometimes the situation is not like you expected to be.
I'm a rigid person, whose loyalty and interest lie with the company I'm working in. I always feel significant and better when I make something that helps my manager.
Personal Development Plan is a specific plan for your future. You should have objectives set up for yourself, plans and actions to be taken in order to achieve those objectives.
In my Personal Development Plan I can see the objectives that I set for myself like:
To improve my quality control skills for the herbs;
To finish every day the order that I have, without leaving something for tomorrow;
To improve my English, because this is very important for my work;
To improve my strength (dutiful, self-discipline, reliable, etc.) and to make my weaknesses (indecisive, predictable, not so flexible, etc.) to be strengths;
To remain calm and to try to listen more to the other people;
I have to take all of the herbs on time in the cold store;
To keep my tractor and the trailer always clean, etc.
I have taken actions to reach these goals and they will motivate me when I achieve them to set up more new objectives to reach. I like challenges and when something is harder to get I become more motivated.
I understand my strengths and weaknesses as well. So I can work harder to make my weaknesses to be strengths. Like one of my weaknesses is that I'm not listening to the other people. If I'm not agree with somebody I have to listen to him what he want to say and after that I can say my opinion, not to interrupt him.
I think now when I know my goals, strengths and weaknesses I can make something every day to get closer to my goals and to improve my weaknesses. I'm tenacious and when I start something I always finish it, I never leave something in the middle, even if it's hard to achieve. Every day when I meet different people I learn something new from them and I add this to my knowledge. Later this helps me to achieve more easily my objectives. So it is better if every day I meet different people and I get across new situations for me, like this I learn something new every day that helps me further in my life and work.
